Tara Hewitt Head of 'Equality Diversion & Inclusion' at Northern Care Alliance advising NHS leaders to ignore EHRCs recent guidance.

Tara Hewitt who holds a senior position within the NHS, is advising CEOs, Chief medical officers and others within the NHS to blatantly ignore new guidance from EHRC regarding single sex provision of services. Claiming it is transphobic. This will not end well...the NHS is there to serve all of us, not just males and their identities. The fact they feel emboldened to do this publicly on twitter is shocking.

I think I’ll write to the Health Secretary and Equalities Minister naming these people publicly declaring their intention to ignore guidance from the UK Equality and Human Rights regulator. Anyone want to join me?

titchy · 05/04/2022 19:29

You know a publication has vigour when Robin and DofM show up on the thread and tell you why it's either wrong, or doesn't say what you think it says.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 05/04/2022 19:32

@Liveliferun

Having just gone down a Twitter rabbit hole briefly, I wouldn’t want to share an NHS ward with Tara or with Tara’s partner.
But, but, but … Tara’s partner identifies as a lesbian? So Tara and Tara’s partner must be female right?

Oh, wait a minute …

The absolute desperation to insist that women have no rights to privacy or boundaries from those born male is very telling. The fury that this has generated.

Transwomen's desire to be alongside undressed / vulnerable women does not outweigh women's rights to say no. We don't consent.

namechange578 · 05/04/2022 19:44

I know Tara. Haven't seen her in person in a few years but still friends on Facebook etc. AllI can say is - this does not surprise me in the slightest.

Tara believes trans rights trump all other rights. Tara is very quick to label things transphobic. Tara thinks that excluding trans people from single sex spaces if justifiable equates to trans people being forced out of the country and that the aim is to "ban them from public life altogether".

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/04/2022 19:46

Interesting, thank you.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/04/2022 19:49

Thanks for the link Robin. Good comment from Maya:

Maya Forstater, executive director of campaign group Sex Matters, said: “This new guidance is a big step forward. It recognises that everyone’s rights need to be balanced, and often the way to do this is with a policy based on biological sex, expressed clearly and simply. The new guidance provides examples of how trans people can be included without undermining other people’s dignity and privacy (for example with ‘gender-neutral’ options), and says that everyone should be treated with respect.”
Forstater, who last summer won a case at the Employment Appeal Tribunall^ which held that her views on gender constituted a philosophical belief, added: “The EHRC’s straightforward explanation should help service providers avoid the difficulties currently plaguing politicians when they are asked questions about the difference between sex and gender identity.”

Does Tara do much campaigning for transmen, at all?
Manicsfan · 05/04/2022 20:14

How can a public servant have such a prominent campaigning voice for such a long time? Aren't there rules about this? I'm thinking how teachers in my area are gagged from speaking out against local authority. Is Tara on breach of contract?

ScreamingMeMe · 05/04/2022 20:20

This isn't merely aimed at the OP, but I do wish people would link to or screenshot things from source.

This level of power to control so many people in the NHS is terrifying for all women when reading this. Tara Hewitt, Head of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion at Northern Care Alliance, advises 3 CEO's, Chief Med Officer & Director of Corporate Affairs to ignore the

As a black Muslim woman, I believe strongly that my right to dignity and respect in health care, is not to be suspended for others, who may also want their own safe space. That's not how "equality" works, by reducing everything to the lowest common denominator, surely?

I don't post on this board, but look in on it. You make such a dismissive remark on here without any legal explanation, it's prompted me to post..

I looked to see if you were on the EHRC Panel of Counsel. It's a very long list of very learned lawyers with expertise in equality and human rights matters. I don't see you on there.
Or did I somehow miss you in the lists?

LittleWhingingWoman · 05/04/2022 20:40

@RobinMoiraWhite please explain with examples exactly how what you are saying is the case?

namechange578 · 05/04/2022 20:42

@DomesticatedZombie what do you think?

DomesticatedZombie · 05/04/2022 22:48
Hmm
Liveliferun · 05/04/2022 22:49

How does Tara continue to hold their position when they clearly are not impartial. They are actively encouraging the EXCLUSION of many women from NHS services, such as kinshasa above but also all of us women, religious or not, who in certain situations want privacy away from biological males like Tara. Their professional role is not just to promote trans rights.

334bu · 05/04/2022 23:01

Hi Robin, I have asked you this question before but never received a reply, so I would be grateful for an answer. Do you believe women should have no rights under any circumstances to single sex services/ facilities ?

namechange578 · 05/04/2022 23:04

@DomesticatedZombie

Hmm
Tara talks a lot about trans rights but I have never specifically seen her campaign for transmen. Or even mention transmen, now that I think of it.
DomesticatedZombie · 05/04/2022 23:11

how odd, namechange. I wonder what it is about transmen that Tara doesn't find worthy of campaigning for.

Manderleyagain · 05/04/2022 23:12

Telegraph have covered it.
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/04/05/nhs-equality-chief-leads-mutiny-against-transphobic-watchdog/

There is an archive copy. Are we allowed to post those?

BaronMunchausen · 05/04/2022 23:15

@RobinMoiraWhite

The latest guidance from the EHRC simply repeats what the Equality Act 2010 says.

Namely, Schedule 3 Part 7 s27 (1)(b). Single sex spaces are described as "a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim" (the phrase the EHRC uses), which would encompass any provision where “the circumstances are such that a person of one sex might reasonably object to the presence of a person of the opposite sex”.

The article you linked to seems to rely heavily on....you. As such, it really doesn't lend authority. Well done on getting Personnel Today to headline your view rather than the EHRC's, but they should know it's "dangerous nonsense" to tell employers to ignore the law.

Tiphaine · 05/04/2022 23:15

It's worth a try Manderley. I've posted a fair few archives for Telegraph links and they've been okay.
