This year I sat in on a sexuality and gender identity awareness session. I won’t name the group that facilitated, but they are a Welsh support group.
During the training it was mentioned that sex is not required on forms, only gender. Someone asked if it is the same for the NHS and was told ‘yes’.
Another member of the group asked about requesting a female health practitioner and the usual ‘are we checking genitals now’ nonsense was trotted out.
In light of the EHRC guidance out today, I feel that this trainer was incompetent and was misinterpreting the law on top of being dismissive of women’s health concerns.
This group is actively engaged in advising local politicians and companies.
Like most people here I want spaces that are safe and offer dignity to all, but how is it that groups like this are getting away with making women feel awful or guilty for asking for clarity on whether they are still ‘allowed’ spaces for women only?
What type of person is comfortable lying to groups of people week in week out?
How do I even begin to complain about this group when I know I will be ignored at best or reported for wrong think?
