Scratching my head over this one, on twitter this evening.....

A new one on me - if we want to call ourselves women we have to provide a definition of the term.....

I always want to scream, "HOW ARE BABIES MADE" at people. Because at it's core, that what the two sexes in evolution are for. Without sperm and eggs there are no sexually reproducing animals at all.

You'd think the basis of all mammalian life on earth (plus birds etc.) would rate a thought.

tabbycatstripy · 03/04/2022 19:36

It’s not an issue. A woman is grown up female person. Are we done?

Aretina · 03/04/2022 19:37

It's simple.

Women are adult human beings of the sex class that typically produces ova and can gestate a baby.

The fact that this is the typical norm does not negate the womanhood of those members of the sex class that do not do so.

VelvetChairGirl · 03/04/2022 19:39

Just step away from twitter and leave the twits to it, its not worth being on that cesspit let it sink under the weight of all their stupidity.

dropthevipers · 03/04/2022 19:48

That would be blokes then? yes?
Aretina · 03/04/2022 19:51

Blokes are not members of the sex class.

tabbycatstripy · 03/04/2022 19:51

No, that would be women who for whatever reason don’t produce ova. Their bodies are still set up to do so. Because they are female bodies.

IcakethereforeIam · 03/04/2022 19:55

No 'cos blokes couldn't gestate a baby however much they might want too. There is no medicine or medical procedure, there is not enough time in the world that would make that possible. But you know that.

tabbycatstripy · 03/04/2022 19:58

We can just say we’re the ones with the potential to birth babies. It doesn’t matter if we can conceive or carry babies. No male body has the potential to do so.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/04/2022 20:01

Surely the response is. ‘You sound confused. Maybe you could ask your mum.’

Aretina · 03/04/2022 20:04

Ha! Perfect!
Abitofalark · 03/04/2022 20:04

I wouldn't give oxygen to such desperate nonsense.

Neverreturntoathread · 03/04/2022 20:05

A woman either has gone through, or will go through, menopause.

IcakethereforeIam · 03/04/2022 20:07

@Mummyoflittledragon, yours is the best response, I've no idea how trolls reproduce.

MrsPaperclip · 03/04/2022 20:07

I never understand the argument about people who can't conceive, like it's some kind of gotcha or trump card. If I (a woman) have difficulty conceiving, they're not going to do a bloody sperm analysis on me, are they? Even the causes of infertility are specific to men and women.

latriciamcneal · 03/04/2022 20:13

I don't get into these conversations anymore but I have a question I would ask if I ever did.

So we still have two distinct categories that can mate, produce offspring, but we cease to call them "male" and "female"

Okay, but you've not erased the categories; the people who bear children are still discriminated against for this fact. The people who produce sperm are still the people who produce sperm.

The situation has not changed, only the name - what is the purpose of changing the name?

tabbycatstripy · 03/04/2022 20:13

I saw people replying to Owen Jones about his bullying of Sharon Davis for saying if you put two males on a desert island they wouldn’t reproduce, but if you put two females they would. They were like - aha! She supports INCEST!

They seem to be stuck in perpetual adolescence. It’s like when I’d come home two hours late and my mum would say, ‘It’s midnight’ and I’d go, ‘It’s not! It’s a minute PAST midnight SO THERE!’ And slam my door.

tabbycatstripy · 03/04/2022 20:14

Sorry: a male and a female they would.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 03/04/2022 20:15

That definition is well established, I just went to the first 3 links that appeared on a google search when I Typed 'Dictionary definition of woman' and all 3 say a woman is an adult female person/human being.

www.dictionary.com/browse/woman

www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/woman

www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/woman

So if they are working outside this well established and documented definition then they absolutely do need to define their terms.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/04/2022 20:23

When you decide which cage to put the bunnies/hamsters/rats in to avoid additional bunnies/hamsters/rats you don't actually check for menopause, fertility or surgery. You sex them and move on. Same with humans. We know what cages our alien overlords would put us in when they take us to Omicron Persei 8.

It is blindingly easy to sex most mammals, especially humans as we have obvious secondary sexual characteristics if you miss the primary ones.

Wilful ignorance is just irritating.

Nellodee · 03/04/2022 20:42

It pisses me off so much when twitter morons say "Ha! Gender critical idiots think sex is so simple, blah, blah, xxy GOTCHA!"

In my time on Mumsnet I have learned aaaaaaaaall about the expression of the SRY gene, thank you very bloody much, because the women here are amazing and informed on every aspect of this nonsense. We also understand that difficulty in categorising edge cases is nothing to bloody do with trans people and has no impact on the 99.9% of cases where its penis = man, vagina = woman.

PrelateChuckles · 03/04/2022 20:45

I assume this is guerilla marketing for Posie's t-shirts?

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 03/04/2022 20:45

@Mummyoflittledragon

Surely the response is. ‘You sound confused. Maybe you could ask your mum.’
StarStarStar

adult human female, females belong to the sex class that is designed around the production of the large less mobile gamete

Then move on they're not engaging in good faith

Cyw2018 · 03/04/2022 20:52

I'd go with a women is an adult human female, where a female can be defined as a human with the absence of a Y chromosome (rather than "with XX" as that would exclude women with Turners or XXX syndrome) and a partial or complete female reproductive system (so as to include female DSD, women who have had a hysterectomy, oophrectomy ect).

Yes would agree, sensible indisputable definition
