Someone seems to be being sensible at last. UCI president recognises their rules are unfair & urges talks with other sports bodies such as swimming and athletics.

Heard a statement was due. I wish they'd make it clear that the problem is transwomen in women's sports. Not trans athletes. If a trans man wants to compete in women's sport there is no problem, provided they aren't taking testosterone.

NancyDrawed · 01/04/2022 07:13

I am glad that sensible discussions are being had, but surely the fairest thing is if everyone competes in the correct category for their sex, keeping in mind pre trans rules.

If that means that people with trans identities cannot compete at the level they would like, I'm afraid that is a disappointment they will just have to swallow - we all have things we would like to do but can't. It will never be fair for TW to compete against women (or TM with raised testosterone against women, I'd imagine). Women will always be the group that is disadvantaged.

Its so annoying when sports associations are reactive rather than proactive when it comes to this issue. Anyone could have seen this potential problem coming down the line years ago but it seems like most sporting bodies didn't want the backlash and so stuck their heads in the sand. Now that they actually want to take some action about this issue, it just looks like they're picking on the trans athlete who comes and follows whatever lax policy they put in place.

Wow that's a fairly balanced article from the guardian I'm shocked

Helleofabore · 01/04/2022 08:05

It is SeanI Ingle. He always seems to strive for balance in his reporting. He has never backed away from discussing this issue and sometimes reports when other MSM does not.

tabbycatstripy · 01/04/2022 08:07

It’s amazing how some reporters (Nolan/Barnett/Ingle) seem able to maintain being journalists over being political commentators and others don’t.

We don't need tougher rules, we just need one. Compete against your own sex.
If you don't like it, tough.

You put it far more succinctly than me!

This. Anyone who claims it's more complex than that is simply telling me they are a fool who is more committed to ideology than truth and fact.

They are playing to a target readership now that they know the tide is well and truly turning against this movement.

Craven cowardice, as they've shown throughout and I for one will never subscribe to them again no matter how trite and apologetic they might become once this ludicrous phase has passed and it's shown up for being as baseless and abusive as it truly is.

I hope they sink without a trace.

Especially while they're still supporting Owen fucking Jones in his foul misogyny.

This, it really is that simple.

Let me just take a moment to blow some kisses across the pond from the USA to the brave athletes on Terf Island, however!
