Sajid Javid has waded into the debate over transgender competitors in sport, saying rules about competing should be governed by "biological sex, not gender".

The Health Secretary voiced his opinion on whether athletes who were born male but now identify as female should be allowed to compete against biological women.

"My own view is that, when it comes to sport, it should be about sex rather than gender – and sex should be based on your biological sex," he told UnHerd.

and:

On a personal level, I can't think of why you would ask anyone that's a biological male if they are pregnant or have been pregnant," he said. "If there is some kind of clinical reason for an NHS hospital to do that, then that's a decision for them."

Is his interview out yet? I’m feeling like it’s been long grassed because of Jamie Wallis.

3peassuit · 31/03/2022 17:03

Unequivocal. How rare for a politician.

AnyFucker · 31/03/2022 17:04

Liking that, Sajid

It should go without saying though, of course

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 31/03/2022 17:04

Hospital wards too, Health Secretary?

Moodlesofnoodles · 31/03/2022 17:25

So what is "unbiological sex"?

Horcruxe · 31/03/2022 17:26

Why is it up to the men to say this?

Why are we waiting for the men to fix this?

Where are the women MP's who are going to stand up for theirs and our rights?

zafferana · 31/03/2022 17:27

@Moodlesofnoodles

So what is "unbiological sex"?
Is it called that to differentiate between your biological sex and reproductive sex?
Franklin12 · 31/03/2022 17:29

Hear hear Javid. At last... something that 95% of the population agrees with. I

leli · 31/03/2022 17:29

Really relieved to hear Javid's statement. Well done.

BellatrixOnABadDay · 31/03/2022 17:31

He's totally correct.

How depressing that we're saying 'well done' for stating the absolute fucking obvious.

sharksarecool · 31/03/2022 17:32

What, like Rosie Duffield? Or Joanna Cherry?

Biological sex could be different to Legal sex if you have a gender recognition certificate?

zafferana · 31/03/2022 17:33

I'm delighted that the Health Secretary has come out with this - way to go Sajid! I suspect that the Tories can see the bugger's muddle that Labour and the other left wing parties are in with all this sex and gender business and how at odds they are with the majority of the electorate, particularly older people who bother to vote. It's an open goal for them ahead of the local elections.

Franklin12 · 31/03/2022 17:34

Yes, totally agree. Over to you Labour....

Fenlandia · 31/03/2022 17:34

@tabbycatstripy

I'm wondering the same
Vallmo47 · 31/03/2022 17:34

It’s maddening this needs to be said but yes obviously agree.

Thank you, Sajid. One final question, it's a completely different topic, I'm afraid but there's a cyclist called Emily Bridges, who is a trans woman who is now competing against British cyclists in a competition. As Health Secretary, what's your view of that? Do you think she should be competing in the women's category?

Sajid Javid
Well, I don't think it's a Health Secretary issue. But if you're asking me more broadly, about what my view is on that, my own view is I think when it comes to sport, it should be about sex rather than gender and sex should be based on your biological sex.

Franklin12 · 31/03/2022 17:36

I hope this is picked up by the media and given the attention it deserves.

Well done Sajid. Its not difficult and blooming obvious to the vast majority of the population but somehow its all become horribly complex for Labour et al.

tabbycatstripy · 31/03/2022 17:36

Just seen the interview and it’s literally all he says. But still, he says it.

Datun · 31/03/2022 17:36

I see someone has put their spectacles on and is busy reading the writing on the wall.

SirChenjins · 31/03/2022 17:37

‘Speaking personally’ is certainly getting there - but as Health Secretary who sets targets on plenty of other areas he could probably go a bit further and set out very clear national clinical guidelines as to why they would ask men - with the expectation from Govt that they don’t in all but the most extenuating of circumstances.

ResisterRex · 31/03/2022 17:37

Yes tabby that's it. But I think it's a good, solid answer

womaniswomaniswoman · 31/03/2022 17:39

The Health Secretary might want to show some leadership then, and make biological sex how services, wards, etc are separated out, rather than letting mixed wards go on, and patients by raped by 'women'.

Words are easy to say.
