Couldn't slepp last night and read two stories - one about a woman, aged 86 who was arrested for the murder of her female partner. She had been in prison before for murdering a futher two female partners. EXCEPT - in the FOURTH paragraph, they siad the "she" was a Transwoman. Fourth paragraph.

The second story was on the dramatic increase of hate crime against Asians (women in particular). The majority of those crime are committed by a particular group of men but no mention was made of that.

Why are newspapers reporting like this or rather, NOT reporting?

How should they have wrote the stories ? I'm confused 😕

Factually maybe? And by highlighting data trends?
SevenWaystoLeave · 15/03/2022 20:06

How was the first story not factual? They said it was a trans woman.

As for the second story I'm not sure what "particular group of men" you mean but it sounds like this might be less about you wanting factual reporting and more about you wanting them to confirm your particular prejudices.

Pluvia · 15/03/2022 20:14

I had a subscription to the NYT for a couple of years till 2018, when it became clear that it was no longer a reliable source of news. It's gone the way of the Guardian, which was my previous go-to. I now subscribe to the Economist.

But 'woman' in the headline and elsewhere. Do you really, truly believe this male murderer is a woman?

Actually no it is not - less about you wanting factual reporting and more about you wanting them to confirm your particular prejudices. HEADLINE: She Killed Two Women. At 83, She Is Charged With Dismembering a Third. FIRST THREE PARAGRAPHS: An 83-year-old Brooklyn woman convicted twice of killing women she lived with was charged with murder on Thursday, after investigators found a head in her apartment that, officials said, belonged to a body discovered in a shopping cart last week.

Harvey Marcelin, who had served decades in prison for murder and manslaughter before her release in 2019, was arrested March 4 and was initially charged with concealment of human remains.

Ms. Marcelin — who was listed as male in earlier court records but now identifies as a woman, according to a law enforcement official — was indicted on second-degree murder charges on Thursday in the death of Susan Leyden, 68. She is accused of dismembering her and hiding her body parts.

This "she" who brutally murders "shes" probably because they are shes will be put in a female prison.

At the very least the and headline should have included the world Trans. Seriously - is this not a problem for anybody???

Because it tells a completely different story.

If you hear that all of a sudden there is an uptick in murders of, say, middle eastern women, and that's all, a lot of people are going to assume, gee, that must be some kind of racial or religious hate crime in the general population.

If it turns out it is by, say, Mormons, you'd think, weird, there is something going on with those Mormons.

If it's murders being carried out by middle eastern men, you might be inclined to think it's a domestic violence problem in that community, or something similar.

These are very different stories and if they are sure of the facts, it's something a good reporter should be telling the readers.

What group of men are attacking Asians?

CanIPleaseHaveOne · 15/03/2022 22:01

@Nixbox

What group of men are attacking Asians?
After Covid there is a large homeless population. In part due to the homeless shelters closing, in part dur to prisons doing early release but no help or back up for the prisoners, and finally, the mental hospitals have put people on the streets.

Barbaric and disgraceful for a wealthy country.

However - Asians, women in particular are being targeted by this community. I do not know the reason but it is clear they are being targeted as a group. It is happening in NY, in San Francisco and in Los Angeles.

It needs clear and acurate reporting.

@MangyInseam - exactly. Thank you too because I could not explain well why I was so appalled by the articles.

It is crap journalism, I loathe the NYT. You want good journalism, try The Atlantic, it’s excellent.

I read this and sent a complaint to the editor, along the lines of being deliberately misleading, and highly offensive to their female readership.

AgathaMystery · 16/03/2022 08:04

Hmmm I do find this with NYT but overall I love the paper so will continue.

Why do you love a paper with crap journalism? Confused
AgathaMystery · 16/03/2022 08:11

I love the real estate section, the spelling bee, Joel’s crossword. Love the community of Bee commentators, I’ve been on there a long long time. I also love the books section and also the investigative stuff. Also the architecture pieces.

Remember the Pulitzer winning article they did on the avalanche? Incredible.

There are journalists at NYT I avoid. I find it’s more individual journos than the whole paper. They’ve done some good trans stuff lately.

DameHelena · 16/03/2022 08:15

I get you, OP. Headlines about women killing grab people's attention because a) it's rare and b) women committing violent crimes are in our society especially vilified (more than men I mean). So they deliberately and very cynically withheld the info about it being a transwoman as long as they could.

TheWeeDonkey · 16/03/2022 08:50

I agree with you OP, these are shocking crimes. It NYT aiming for sensationalist click bait or factual journalism? Because you can get the first one anywhere on the Internet.

If their aim is to make the paper irrelevant then they're going in the right direction.
