She's a star and thought this speech deserved its own thread. Smile

@Coyoacan

Inspiring. Joanna Cherry combines moral fibre with huge intelligence. If I lived in Scotland, I would vote for her for First Minister.
Unfortunately the SNP quietly changed the rules so that she can't stand for First Minister.

@Pluvia

Just a note that Peter Bottomley is a Conservative.

I just want to leave that there, because as a former Labour voter I have heard more good sense talked on this subject by the Conservatives than by my former party. Labour is driving women to the right.

Sort of. I'm still left on most policy, I expect. But I will vote Tory if it helps women. That's that.

There were two interventions by men. Who was the other one?

DomesticatedZombie · 10/03/2022 18:36

Probably Sir Jenkin?

7:50, Sir Jenkin, who also made a great speech, see the other thread!

What a woman. Wish she was my MP! Sadly, I'm a constituent in the city she mentioned... thanks for the shout out JC, please bear in mind that there are plenty of us here who think like you do and appreciate you speaking out for us all Grin

KimikosNightmare · 10/03/2022 19:08

@DomesticatedZombie

Hooray for Sir Bottomley, too. What a fab name.
Bit of a derail, but he is Virginia Bottomley's husband. Virginia Bottomley was a health minister in Major's cabinet and was always staunchly pro- choice. What is interesting is that before they married Virginia was pregnant and then a mother, aged 19 at Essex University.

The pregnancy clearly didn't hinder either career but it's the sort of situation that can make people anti- choice (the "wasn't a problem for me" mindset) rather than being empathetic to others.

RaininSummer · 10/03/2022 19:13

That was great to watch. Ty for drawing my attention to it

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 10/03/2022 19:29

Magnificent. She is an amazing woman

Timefortea4 · 10/03/2022 19:30

Just when you think you couldn't admire her anymore. Bravo Joanna Cherry. In awe of your courage and analysis Star

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 10/03/2022 21:25

@tootiredtobother

yes she is excellent but I'm sad to see so much space on the benches around her, where is everyone ?
Same as when the names of murdered women are read out, when it comes down to it most of them couldn't give a shiny shite. And some of them probably too cowardly to get involved.
MalagaNights · 10/03/2022 21:44

Fantastic.
She's inspiring.
Keep going Joanna you're changing this.

daringdoris · 11/03/2022 00:07

She's just fantastic.

I'm emailing Liz Saville-Roberts (Plaid Cymru woman, sitting right behind her) tomorrow to see if she disagreed with any of JC's speech. She spent a lttle less time on her phone than her neighbour I suppose Hmm but seemed attentive for at least part of it.

[email protected] if any others in Wales want to join me.

morningtoncrescent62 · 11/03/2022 00:10

That bit where she says "As a woman and a lesbian my rights are not conditional on my accepting gender identity politics' sent shivers down my spine. So strong and clear, a magnificent woman.

And guess who re-tweeted it? Yes, that other Jo.

She's bloody wonderful That's the speech I would hope Angela Eagle would make, but no bloody chance. Hope it made her squirm. Doubt it though.

Femisaurus · 11/03/2022 00:15

I f* love Joanna Cherry

Monitaurus · 11/03/2022 00:20

Bloody brilliant. Thank you for all you are doing.

CandyLeBonBon · 11/03/2022 01:41

@Toseland

The guy standing to add his points was Sir Peter Bottomley - well done him
Ooh he's my MP!
Waitwhat23 · 11/03/2022 06:32

Joanna Cherry is one of the only reasons I haven't lost hope in Scottish politics entirely. The Scottish Government are determined to torpedo women's rights and I can't praise Joanna enough for holding the line.

VelvetChairGirl · 11/03/2022 06:59

need many more like her

waterlego · 11/03/2022 08:41

Mine too @CandyLeBonBon. I’ve never been a fan but he’s just gone up in my estimations!

borntobequiet · 11/03/2022 09:05

Peter Bottomley is an old-fashioned One Nation Conservative - not many of them left in the HOC now. Bernard Jenkin a bit of a mixed bag. But support is always good.

Cherry is a Westminster MP- nothing to do with the deranged bunch in Holyrood. And aside from this one aspect Cherry is just as deranged as all of her fellow separatists in Holyrood.
Whereareyourshoes · 11/03/2022 09:06

Wonderful speech. Truthful and passionate. Refreshing to hear an MP speak with such integrity. No waffle, no bs.

SayYouDontMind · 11/03/2022 14:11

I'm always impressed by someone who can be calm, articulate and use language with such precision. Hats off to you Joanna - I need to carry this clip around with me for when I'm confronted by people who woefully misinterpret the arguments and shout 'transphobe' at every turn.

I've just watched someone basically suggest that all sports should be treated like boxing and be based on height, individual strength, weight and should have no male and female categories, and that all the arguments about how transwomen athletes retain any physical advantages over female athletes is 'all shit' and 'transphobic' and just 'hate'.

It's nice to come back here and listen to someone like JC. And breathe...
