Press Release:
realforwomen.files.wordpress.com/2022/03/global-prison-protests-media-statement.pdf

Protests are planned in locations across the globe to raise awareness about how vulnerable women and girls are being locked up with men in prisons and jails.

Government departments around the world are implementing harmful policies which allow biological men to pretend they are women in order to be housed with girls & women in jails and prisons, including youth facilities. These policies introduce alarming levels of risk to the female inmate population; risk of serious assault, rape, even death, and the policies are based on unscientific and false claims that human beings can switch our biological sex.

On March 6th – 8th, in the lead up to International Women’s Day, protests will be happening in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, Canada and the USA, among other countries. Leading the global call and some of the protests are ex-incarcerated women from Canada, Australia and the USA. In their own words:

"Male prisons are significantly more violent than women's prisons, and that violence transfers to women when men are allowed in our prisons." – Heather Mason

“Removing sex-segregation from penal facilities is blatantly removing the most imperative form of harm prevention for females that exists within jails and prisons.” – Jessica Williams

“You know we’re in trouble when men’s feelings take precedence over women’s physical safety and wellbeing in the prison system.” – Amie Ichikawa

Incarcerated women & girls are among the most vulnerable and oppressed women on the planet, and they cannot escape or identify out of the policies which allow them to be victimised further than anyone could have imagined; by giving way to men “self-identifying” as women and being housed with at-risk girls & women in jails and prisons. Females and males (women/girls and men/boys) are biologically different in ways that cannot change and experts across the world oppose policies which allow male prisoners to be housed as and with women. At-risk male prisoners must be housed within male prisons & jails, and measures to protect their dignity and safety must occur within male penal facilities.

Women across the world are fed up! Enough is enough!

Our aim is to raise awareness about these harmful policies which are placing already vulnerable women and girls in dangerous situations with very dangerous men, and we hope to inspire others to take action to support our important cause. Supporters and sympathisers are asked to contact their local and federal politicians via email, letter, phone or in person meeting, and to let them know that policies and laws which allow men to be housed with women in jails and prisons have absolutely no place in a decent society.

The media is asked to fulfil their important role in society by helping protestors get our message out to the masses. The public deserves to know what is happening to the most vulnerable members of our communities.
