I’ve just seen this map and I think someone is missing. www.cityofwomenlondon.org/

I do remember copious voting… platform 9 3/4s. Well we all know don’t we.

@MintMocha

I'd not realised that Emma Watson was in charge of "re-imagining" it. That explains a lot.
The same Emma Watson famed for telling the world that in Britain, "any woman can run for prime minister".

So someone who knows nothing about the basics of her own country's political system. No wonder she left out so many important, relevant, interesting women -- including of course JKR, whose only fault is that she nurtured so many people who weren't worth her time.

NitroNine · 09/03/2022 02:20

Anyone know if Jackie Forster had any kind of link to KXSP? Google suggests not.

Am also very distressed by DLR-exclusionary nature of this map & would like to report it as a hate crime against people from SE London.

MidsomerMurmurs · 09/03/2022 06:53

@SayYouDontMind

Wot no Shon Faye?? A travesty!
Where’s Eddie Izzard?!? Her struggle is an inspiration for women everywhere.
AsTreesWalking · 09/03/2022 07:01

I'm pissed off that a woman i suggested who nurtured and educated thousands of girls isn't on there. Not well known, but important. Not sexy or self promoting, and historical, so obv boring. (Outing to name her, sorry)

SunniDelite · 09/03/2022 10:00

I can't imagine who would buy this, apart from people who have their names on it... Let's hope it's a big flop, although shame about the waste of trees.......

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2022 10:02

Given there are historical women on there as well, it simply undermines the whole concept. I was looking at a few women’s names, thinking what an honour they might feel it to be, if it wasn’t for the wedging in of nonentities, placed there only for political reasons.

Indeed.

@SpinningTheSeedsOfLove

Shall we do our own version?
This is an excellent idea!

I know someone who can change this up for us but my brain is a little frazzled. Can you please tell me who we would like to replace the following:

April Ashley to be replaced by ...
Travis Alabanza to be replaced by ...
Paris Lees to be replaced by ...
Munro Bergdorf to be replaced by ...

HMP Holloway to be replaced by Emily Davison?

Adding JK Rowling, of course - with Platform 9 and 3/4 at Kings Cross?

Christine Burns to be replaced by ?

Rebecca Solnit be replaced by?

Anyone else need replacing?

(I have name changed btw as I don't want this linked to my normal mn name as I've talked about wanting to do this with quite a few rl friends)

PhotosAndFrames · 09/03/2022 22:15

Munro Bergdorf to be replaced by Jessie Mathews?

Roz Kaveney to be replaced by ...?

viques · 09/03/2022 22:23

Hibo Wardere to replace Buchi Emecheta

PonyPatter44 · 09/03/2022 22:27

Dame Henrietta Barnett should be on there - born in Clapham, lived in Spitalfields and then Hampstead. She did huge amounts to improve the lives of poor women and children in London in the 19th and early 20th century.

CrossPurposes · 09/03/2022 22:29

@PhotosAndFrames

Munro Bergdorf to be replaced by Jessie Mathews?

Roz Kaveney to be replaced by ...?

RK replaced by Agatha Christie
Cailleach1 · 09/03/2022 22:37

Is it a joke map, maybe? The ridiculous (spot the odd ones out who definitely don't have any business being there) and the sublime - Hibo Wardere and Emmeline Pankhurst.

viques · 09/03/2022 22:40

Miss Buss and Miss Beale should be in there somewhere.

PhotosAndFrames · 09/03/2022 22:41

Don't the places have to match with the person though? Hibo is from Walthamstow and Emma Talbot is down for that station.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with all the tube stations and their local area but I will have a go:

Paris Lees - Tufnell Park
Munro Bergdorf - Piccadilly Circus = Jessie Matthews

I don't know April Ashley's tube station name
Nor Travis Alabanza's
Nor Roz Kaveney - is A Cristie relevant for the tube station?

Cailleach1 · 09/03/2022 22:44

Hibo Wardere or someone like that should do one which only features women. With the proceeds going to support women and girls. I'd buy that.

KimikosNightmare · 09/03/2022 22:46

It's beyond ridiculous. Could Watson be any more petty?

The omission of JKR is to be expected given Watson's involvement.

The omission of Margaret Thatcher is pathetic- no matter what your politics are omitting the UK's first female prime minister in favour of the many nonentities who are included is disgraceful.

WinterTrees · 09/03/2022 22:48

I couldn't work out the logic for most of the individuals being placed where they were. What is Bergdorf's link to Piccadilly Circus?

(Tbf I couldn't work out the logic for a lot of the individuals full stop. As well as the obvious ones that don't belong, it feels a bit like Emma leafed through a copy of the Radio Times to get the others.)

PhotosAndFrames · 09/03/2022 22:50

I obviously have not made myself clear. This is not going for sale. It will be an alternative version of the map so that men and their allies are not on it. It will be put up on social media, hopefully (if I can get it to work).

Paris Lees = Tufnell Park = to be replaced by Sue Crockford - filmmaker, she also helped form the Tufnell Park Women’s Liberation Group

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2022 22:51

Lees is from Nottingham, why are they on this list?

PhotosAndFrames · 09/03/2022 22:57

Because it's a joke of a map. Hence replacement names.

CrossPurposes · 09/03/2022 22:59

It is quite a daunting thing to connect people to stations when there may be multiple people connected with that place or they may come from a place not on the underground so quite a few women have been shoehorned in to other places. For example Kate Bush is Shepherd's Bush because (I assume) her birthplace in Bexleyheath isn't on the map. Dusty Springfield is Holland Park (no idea why) and her formative years were in Ealing (Northfields would have been good for her). Jessie Matthews is placed at Ruislip Gardens probably because it isn't far from Eastcote where she died. I've no idea what Roz K's connection to North Acton but that is in the London borough of Ealing and Agatha Christie spent time in Ealing when she was young. Ealing Broadway is taken by Sutapa Biswas who is connected to Southall which isn't on the map.

It's very complicated!

PermanentTemporary · 09/03/2022 23:01

I really like Konnie Huq, she's great, but is she really more significant as a woman than say Joan Littlewood in/around Chiswick?

Trouble is, by looking at solid achievements we are inevitably going to add lots of old and sadly uninstagrammable women. What a terrible thing.

ShineTogether · 09/03/2022 23:06

I've heard other people say this before and now it's me: Suddenly I can't un-see it.
I'm pretty MOTR in my GC/feminism but penny has dropped. This is not cool.

TWAW but violent criminals do not deserve protection or sympathy - and not recognition on IWD. Why do people keep conflating these issues?

PhotosAndFrames · 09/03/2022 23:09

IKR @CrossPurposes! But thanks for the tip re: Agatha Christie - she will def replace Roz K.

So far:

Sue Crockford replacing Paris Lees
Jessie Matthews replacing Munro Bergdorf
Agatha Christie replacing Roz Kaveney
HMP Holloway to be replaced by Emily Davison

I still need names for:
April Ashley
Travis Alabanza
Christine Burns
Rebecca Solnit because we're not sure what connection she has to London.
