I’ve just seen this map and I think someone is missing. www.cityofwomenlondon.org/

OP posts:

And why is Rebecca Solnit involved? She's American and lives in the US as far as I know

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 08/03/2022 15:07

Maybe be some of them were sponsored by all those corporates who are now desperately pretending they weren't flirting with Russian money.

For charidee, obvs.

viques · 08/03/2022 15:07

HMP Holloway??? Is that for suffragettes Emma , or because you ran out of transwomen? Why not do the research and name some, Emily Davison would have been a good choice , born in Greenwich, hid herself in the Houses of Parliament, imprisoned and force fed in Holloway.

CrossPurposes · 08/03/2022 15:09

Jessie Matthews was born in Soho so would have been the perfect choice for Piccadilly Circus rather than a transwoman from Stansted.

NecessaryScene · 08/03/2022 15:14

Travis Albanza

I think you're all mistaking a parody for something serious... They overegged it a bit there, giving the game away.

VelvetChairGirl · 08/03/2022 15:30

why is there literally a prison on there

VelvetChairGirl · 08/03/2022 15:32

according to her wiki the nearest she's been to here is Paris
WinterTrees · 08/03/2022 15:44

I didn't spot Bergdorf either, but suspected they would be somewhere if Paris Lees was, otherwise tantrums would be had.

It is such an embarrassingly misguided show of silly posturing. The absolute height of virtue signalling. Imagine - Travis Alabanza (non-woman and creator of a stage show called Burgerz which 'focuses on audience participation regarding an incident in 2016 where a person threw a burger at them while walking across a bridge in London', according to Wikipedia.) gets a place, but JK Rowling CH OBE, who... well, I'm not even going to bother listing the achievements of the woman who created the best-loved children's fiction series ever and whose work sparked a multi-billion dollar global media franchise, and who has given millions upon millions of pounds to numerous charities to improve the lives of the (genuinely) most vulnerable and disempowered all around the world... doesn't.

Honestly Emma, stop it. You're embarrassing yourself.

Waitwhat23 · 08/03/2022 15:45

Unfortunately, it is not a parody. Waterstones are selling this on their website.

Clymene · 08/03/2022 15:54

And is largely responsible for Emma's entire career @WinterTrees

RoaringtoLangClegintheDark · 08/03/2022 16:35

It’s vile, it really is.

Not surprised to hear Waterstones are selling this. They can fuck off to the far side of fuck too with their “IWD” display:

Waterstones have an unimpressive showing in the Gender Pay Gap as well -

geojellyfish · 08/03/2022 20:06

This is the most laughable attempt to create something of any interest, worth or meaning to women, Londoners or anyone else.

Clearly a lot of time and effort has gone into this, and yet this is the best they have managed? What an utter waste of time and money. I dread to think how much it has cost.

And have you seen the indulgent biographies for each person? Ramblings that fail to clearly or concisely explain why that person has been selected for this project, what their connection is to London and how they have shaped women's or Londoners lives.

geojellyfish · 08/03/2022 20:21

Interestingly, not everyone has a biography. Yet?

geojellyfish · 08/03/2022 20:36

There are other omissions along with those previously mentioned.

One that springs to mind is Baroness Floella Benjamin who emigrated to the UK as part of the wind rush generation, has worked in children's television since the 70s(?) and is now a HoL peer campaigning to protect children, young people and women from the dangers of violent porn and the objectification of women. She is arguably more influential than some of the other selections, but presumably she doesn't fit this project's rather obvious political agenda.

Waitwhat23 · 08/03/2022 20:37

It looks like biographies will be added during Women's History Month -

'Find out more about the lives that have shaped London as this map grows daily over the course of Women’s History Month 2022...'

Cuck00soup · 08/03/2022 20:41

Nicely done. But would expect no less.

SayYouDontMind · 08/03/2022 21:10

Wot no Shon Faye?? A travesty!

TheCurrywurstPrion · 08/03/2022 21:31

That’s the problem if you start down this line. The people listed here are noteworthy only for their sex. They haven’t done anything significant, let alone important to women.

Given there are historical women on there as well, it simply undermines the whole concept. I was looking at a few women’s names, thinking what an honour they might feel it to be, if it wasn’t for the wedging in of nonentities, placed there only for political reasons.

SayYouDontMind · 08/03/2022 21:41

Of course there are loads of amazing women on there and I've enjoyed learning about some women I wasn't aware of before. I remember voting for Amy Winehouse and J K Rowling. I'm very surprised JKR isn't on there - it's almost as if it was a deliberate snub which is very petty if that's the case.

DPotter · 08/03/2022 21:53

what about Wendy Savage - forth right Obstetrician hounded out by the patriarchy in the 1980s? At the Royal London

Hasselhoffsheadband · 08/03/2022 22:43

Travis Alabanza?!

He is a bloke with a slightly eccentric dress sense. Absolutely fuck all to do with women.

What a load of dick pandering BOLLOCKS!!! Literally.

stimpyyouidiot · 08/03/2022 22:52

Emma is such a fucking let down.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 08/03/2022 23:35

What a rubbish rip off of The Great Bear.
