OK, so this is very mean-spirited of me, but I've just had a delightful exchange with someone on Twitter.

The subject was #shameonscotland which is currently trending. Someone said that the bill, and the people opposing it, were transphobes. And they questioned whether the terfs actually believe that predators pretend to be trans.

So I sent a couple of links to news reports of predators who had claimed to be trans in order to get access to women, and assault them.

Yeah, my interlocutor declared, but that was a transwoman assaulting the ciswoman, not a predator pretending to be trans.

Reader, they took that tweet down almost instantly. Maybe because it didn't make the "ah-ha!" point they thought it did....

Yes: either Karen White (for example) is truly trans (i.e. trans people can also be sex offenders just like the rest of the population) or they pretended to be trans to gain access to potential victims (but that never happens...)

Well 50% of all trans prisoners in Scotland are there for sexual offences vs 5% of males (who id as males)

They've painted themselves into a corner on this point. Their only way out is basically shutting their eyes, sticking their fingers in their ears & pretending nobody said anything, there is no evidence of assaults happening, etc.

That or we get accused of trotting out the same old stories (funny how there are simultaneously no assaults & the same old assaults).

I once saw someone demanding statistics as though we didn't have any. When supplied with statistics he claimed we'd made them up. When told that they were from the MoJ in the UK, he refused to read them. I don't think he had an excuse left: he just plain refused to look at what he'd been demanding to be given.

They have no answers.

It's such a blind spot isn't it?

Predators infiltrate every space they see an opportunity, this is a fact.
The church, social care, health care, law enforcement, entertainment, dating sites, schools, amateur and professional sports. Have I missed anything?

Why would this group be any different?

The argument is naive at best, and dismissive of people's experiences of abuse at best.

A significant percentage of prisoners who identify as trans are in prison due to being serious sexual offenders.

There are only two explanations for this phenomenon:

1. Trans people are inherently prone to being violent sex offenders compared to the general population of male prisoners.
2. Violent sex offenders are likely to pretend to be trans as it provides some wonderful opportunities with no questions asked such as being transferred to women's prisons.

So, gender zealots - which one is it?

If you suspect, even for the briefest moment, that it might be the second reason, then congrats - you're on the 'gender critical' side.

You won’t get any answers from the usual suspects Nonny but it is always worth repeating.

I've just remembered the third step in this oft-repeated argument:

Step 1: This never happens

• Evidence of one such attacker is given

Step 2: That's just one.

• Evidence of many attackers is given

Step 3: You're painting all trans people as predators flounce

Evidence is a right wing dog whistle.

One of those penny drop moments OP
