The have a history of not thinking things through - a couple of years ago they thought that cooking classes were appropriate International Women’s Day activities

Monitaurus · 04/03/2022 11:13

Why? Why is the point?

ATeamAmy · 04/03/2022 11:18

FFS. Why must drag queens be bloody everywhere? And do they not understand how offensive that name is?

Whatwouldscullydo · 04/03/2022 11:20

What have drag Queens got to do with buildings Hmm

Zeugma · 04/03/2022 11:24

RIBA? RIBA ??

FFS.

Zeugma · 04/03/2022 11:29

Oh, and THIS Aida-H-Dee?

Janesmom · 04/03/2022 11:31

If you don’t like it, don’t go. I really don’t understand why most people on this board are so focused on imposing their views on everyone else!

Whatwouldscullydo · 04/03/2022 11:34

Safguarding didnt used to be an opinion it used to be a necessity as far s children went.

'Most people' on this board are here because we don't like others imposing their views on everybody else. For example:

Man: "I'm a woman"
Women: "OK, whatever"
Man: "No! You have to say it. And believe it"

What's drag got to do with children or architecture?

Is that your attitude towards people objecting to racism?

Fuck knows what a child or a parent of a child who has an ADHD diagnosis is supposed to think about a man in drag using their condition as a joke name. Hmm

Janesmom · 04/03/2022 12:48

@Clymene I didn’t realise every event by an architecture group had to be exclusively related to architecture. Are they not allowed to put on free entertainment for kids?

Presumably, you’d be equally appalled if a local sports club offered face painting or a restaurant offered free toys?

Yes, if the sports club offered face painting by a person dressed in a way that mocked women and had a name which mocked the disabled.

RoseslnTheHospital · 04/03/2022 13:00

@Janesmom since when is face painting or toys the same as a drag performance?

Clymene · 04/03/2022 13:05

No, because those are activities aimed at children.

This is a man dressed in a costume where his penis is clearly visible with a 'joke' name about a distressing and difficult neurological disorder.

Would you consider that suitable children's entertainment if he weren't dressed as a gross caricature of a woman?

MangyInseam · 04/03/2022 13:05

I wouldn't assume this guy doesn't have ADHD himself.

But it's kind of dumb, it doesn't seem to have any logical link to architecture. Why not have, say, Bob the Builder read the story?

ATeamAmy · 04/03/2022 13:05

@Janesmom, can you explain what value a drag artist, dressed in sexually provocative clothing, quite frightening make up, and bearing a name that is a piss take on a condition many children attending may suffer from, adds to those children?

I think he does but just because he’s ok with mocking his condition this should not give him a free pass to mock the condition

this, 100 times over. Who on earth thinks this is suitable kids' entertainment? It's so offensive on so many levels.

DomesticatedZombie · 04/03/2022 13:58

And regards the name - an adult may decide they wish to 'reclaim' a name/term like that. But for a child young enough to be read storybooks and picture books, the irony and linguistic/social nuance is just confusing. Imagine calling yourself 'OCD' or 'Schizo' or similar - it's exactly the same. Too sophisticated for an audience of young children.

hypnobrai · 04/03/2022 14:32

This was the RIBA's attempt to educate us last year during Pride Month, which is still on their website. Covers gender terminology and heavily pushes the declaration of pronouns at every possible opportunity, including embedding this in the recruitment process, emails, digital directories. Note also links to trans activists and dodgy scientific papers at end. (Also self-parody photo/caption).

I am completely livid about this latest development - the lack of judgment and disregard for safeguarding.

I've started writing a complaint letter to the RIBA and I'd be interested to hear from other architects who are doing the same (please pm me).

EeeICouldRipATissue · 04/03/2022 16:01

Safguarding didnt used to be an opinion it used to be a necessity as far s children went.
Why do you assume safe guarding checks aren't automatically done like they will be for everyone else coming in to read?
So there's someone in drag reading a story.
I can't get worked up about someone reading a story to kids in the middle of a library group session.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 04/03/2022 16:03

Fun day group session that should read, not library!
So many threads all about the same thing lately, was library last week
