Very interesting read so far - although I'm going to read it in sections.

Kathleen Stock writing about feminism, liberalism and John Gray is basically my dream come true Grin

What a terrific read. I meant to keep it and spend time on it later, but couldn't stop. So clear, honest and wise. No wonder those who live by delusion and pretence can't stand her.

HollowTalk · 03/03/2022 22:59

Such an interesting read.

CompleteGinasaur · 03/03/2022 23:16

Throw out the Genderbread Person and put this up on school walls; even if they still disagree after they've read it at least the poor wee tykes will have had a good demonstration of proper, rigorous critical thinking - not going to get that from a Stonewall publication...

DontAskIDontKnow · 04/03/2022 19:58

That is a great article. I enjoyed it, learnt a lot and thoroughly agreed with it.
It has a calm and moderate tone, and yet somewhere like the guardian (who should be publishing opinion pieces like this!) would consider it extreme and controversial. I can only hope for a utopian future where Kathleen Stock is given the kind of platform that she deserves.

ScrollingLeaves · 04/03/2022 22:04

Thank you for this. It is so lucid and brilliant.

LassoOfTruth · 04/03/2022 22:09

And I didn’t think I could admire her more. Brilliant, thanks for posting this.

IcakethereforeIam · 04/03/2022 23:27

I don't believe I've read her work before. Really interesting, informative and humourous. 5Star would read again. Never heard of John Gray, nominative determinism?

An excellent piece. I love "According to him, there's no meaning in nature, and nature is all there is. There’s no God, no transcendent purpose, nor universal values. Humans are animals, albeit more predatory and less effective at coordinated action than many other species."

bishophaha · 05/03/2022 08:59

Thanks, enjoyed that, esp
How exactly we are supposed to reach a point where we “deal with sexual violence”, or “get men on board”, or disseminate effective “sex education”, when we can’t even say out loud that choking is bad for us, is a bit of a mystery. But in any case - to repeat the main point - there is no plausible future where we have already dealt with sexual violence, or where the dangerous men are onboard, or where the right sort of sex education has solved it all. That’s a comforting delusion. So we need start talking unambiguously about the problems of encouraging potentially dangerous men to hurt us - right now.

Yes, me too! I'm a big fan of John Gray. All in all, a fascinating piece. She says what I've always thought, which is that the idea that you can "educate" violent men not to attack women is wishful thinking. Unfortunately, there will always be violent men who will attack women.
