Why would anyone not become a legal man?

Gender recognition reform bill to be tabled at Holyrood www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-60589578

I can't wait for this. I'm definitely going to change my legal gender.

It would be much easier to achieve equality this way, just think of all that administrative male privilege I'll be able to access. Im pretty sure I'll get a pay rise almost straight away, as soon as HR run the numbers and see that I'm a financial anomaly compared to my male peers.

I could report a crime and be taken seriously. It's all very exciting.

Im not worried about health care, obviously I still have my cervix, so that's not a concern.

One thing though, DH is refusing to change to be a legal woman - I can't imagine why.

Im not homophobic, Im happy to become a lesbian. But it means DS technically won't have a mother. It might be a bit of a difficult one for him.

I guess Mermaids have a handy pamphlet that will sort all this out.

I really can't understand what everyone is complaining about...

Good thing they have absolute clarity on numbers thanks to the census. Could have been a minefield trying to work out how many men, women, "men" and "women" there are in Scotland.

SamphiretheStickerist · 03/03/2022 08:30

Ooh! I could be tempted to move to Scotland. Such benefits are not to be sniffed at!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/03/2022 08:32

Will you be able to inherit property and title that are passed down the make line?

RocketPanda · 03/03/2022 08:32

I think identifying as male when in medical settings will get better access to pain management and probably quicker diagnosis of menstrual disorders.

corlan · 03/03/2022 08:36

Brilliant! I'm a single parent. As a woman, a lot of people look down their nose at me. When I'm a man, they'll think I'm a bloomin' hero!

Youmadeyourbed · 03/03/2022 08:40

Think of all the mansplaining you'll be able to do. And man spreading. And dominating pavement space. Your DH refusing to be gay is just denial and abusive. You've always been a man, ergo he's always been attracted to a man and thus gay. Perhaps the 3 of you need to do one of those hostage videos for CBBC to let the world know it's all fabulous and tickety-boo over the rainbow.

334bu · 03/03/2022 08:53

Sorry when it comes to inheriting a title they still want to know if you ever had a penis. No penis no title.

justaftb · 03/03/2022 08:57

For the ultimate privilege, I would first idenify as a man and once acknowledged as such, would begin identifying as a transwoman. Better odds on gaining places on boards/leadership roles/prizes shortlists than either a woman or a regular man.

WeeBisom · 03/03/2022 09:01

Remember as per the new law you have to prove you’ve lived “as a man”’for at least three months. Make sure you keep a diary to show them all the manly things you’ve been doing. I’m sure they have an objective criteria to test whether you have behaved manly enough for three months in a row.

OldCrone · 03/03/2022 09:06

I thought they were removing the requirement to 'live as a man' before getting a GRC because nobody could describe what it means without resorting to stereotypes. (Or was that the recommendation from the UK government committee?)

Pluvia · 03/03/2022 09:10

It'll be a massive relief for me. I work in a 95% male sector and currently a lot of people don't take me seriously. They pretend to but we all know that women aren't as good as men when it comes to technical stuff, don't we? So by quickly changing my sex (only an administrative procedure) I will henceforth be taken seriously.

Drivingish · 03/03/2022 09:11

I don't live in Scotland so technically I shouldn't be able to make use of this but I have Scottish ancestry so it's in the DNA somewhere and I feeeelz Scottish (I like shortbread and lochs and everything!) so that's the same right?

I can't wait for all the backdated applause from the years I was a single dad!!

spacehardware · 03/03/2022 09:11

"Will you be able to inherit property and title that are passed down the male line?"

You'll be astonished to learn this, but no! It seems notwithstanding that we are supposed to think people really ARE there gender identity for all purposes, this doesn't quite mean all purposes

Genius!

Your inheritance rights are exactly the same whether you're a man or a woman except for inheritance to titles such as Duke etc. Actual physical property doesn't pass down the male line.
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/03/2022 09:18

@KimikosNightmare that is the exact point. One of the ultimate bits of male privilege, where a second cousin can inherit over a daughter, is unchanged. Because it will directly inconvenience privileged men.

The rest of us mere mortals have got over that.

Youmadeyourbed · 03/03/2022 09:19

How does that work with stately homes etc, Kimikos? Does the real estate and family valuables attached to the title not pass with the title to the oldest male heir? Is a separate will gifting the property required?

Did some Green Party numpty not do that? They were claiming maximum oppression points as a woman who was a man who was a woman or some such guff.

I’ve got jeans, a hoody and trainers on. I’ve got short hair… feeling pretty manly right now.

That's how I thought it worked. It's not just the title, it's the big country pile that goes with it which is passed down the male line.
LunaLights · 03/03/2022 09:29

GRA - 2004
Section 16 states: 'The fact that a person's gender has become the acquired gender under this Act (a) does not affect the descent of any peerage or dignity or title of honour, and (b) does not affect the devolution of any property.'

You could get pregnant and have a baby, because apparently that’s part of “living as a man” now [shrug].
BluerThanRobinsEggs · 03/03/2022 09:36

Can i join the Masons? I can do a funny handshake, I've just taken the bins out, and I'm cultivating a moustache. And I'm wearing a men's tshirt! Wow - I'm in!!

Chersfrozenface · 03/03/2022 09:38

Next thing... Can I have two sets of ID, one for when I'm in woman mode and one for when I'm in man mode?

(I've done re-enactment for years and have plenty of experience of playing male roles, with photos.)
