Biden's State of the Union address and his disregard for women's rights

Joe Biden has doubled down on the 'rights' of anyone, and everyone who wishes to do so, to encroach on the safety, dignity and fairness of women.

Only recently hard won opportunities, places and spaces for women will now be open to males who simply wish to access or take them. Thus depriving a woman of her right to something which was created for her in order to address inequalities and challenges specific to women.

And for our LGBTQ+ Americans, let’s finally get the bipartisan Equality Act to my desk. The onslaught of state laws targeting transgender Americans and their families is wrong.

As I said last year, especially to our younger transgender Americans, I will always have your back as your President, so you can be yourself and reach your God-given potential.

Is it a male's god given potential to destroy women's sports, and force them to have to undress in their presence (as the Penn women's swimming team reportedly are coerced to do, in fear of censure or removal from the team). Whose potential is being enhanced in medication and surgical removal of body parts in healthy young people?

The phrase 'open your mouth and remove all doubt' springs to mind. Kamala apparently busy clapping him on. Just wondering out loud if some backer is demanding their misogynistic wishes be implemented before they'll open their purses for the next election. Is that democracy in action?

I've said this before but Joe Biden (a person I genuinely respect) has no clue what's happening in trans rights vs women's rights. He thinks it's about gay, sad, weak boys who are getting beaten up in schools. He** should be paying attention to Lia Thomas but he's also in the middle of a pandemic and there's a war in Ukraine. I can't blame him for not understanding the trans bill because our own media fails to report on it accurately. He set this shit in motion because his friend Sarah McBride, a transwoman, has his ear. While Biden is accountable, he's also clueless. Also, it's the GOP who are always against LGB and women's rights so it takes a lot of will to override your cognitive dissonance and accept the Republicans are right about it this one issue. Biden isn't alone in his utter cluelessness-I see it in my own Democrat friends.

It's up to critical thinking Americans to reach out to their senators to change the language in the Equality Act and ADD "sex" which currently isn't in it. We have to fight this because the president isn't bothering to pay attention (and I won't fault him for it too much considering all the other issues).

When I read threads like this one my first thought is always that you are not speaking for all women and I am not clear what rights I am losing as a woman if someone wants to transition...

I really don't understand this. I must be living on another planet because I don't wake up every day thinking that my life would be so much better if I did not have to share spaces or come in contact with transgender women or transgender men.

Who actually in these threads has ever been threatened, abused or have their rights denied by a transgender person?

I was raised by an abusive father, faced male aggression, discrimination, sexism and misogyny many times and was sexually assaulted by a male friend. All were cis men living as men. Those are the people who have tried to threaten my rights...

I don't know a single person who has had any issues with a transgender man or woman.

I am asking myself again, what is the reason for this constant obsession with demonising them?

MichelleScarn · 02/03/2022 17:32

@wingscrow so if it didn't happen to you or your friends it didn't happen?

FalopianUtopia · 02/03/2022 17:51

He mixed up Iranians and Ukrainians in a speech.

“Putin may circle Kyiv with tanks, but he’ll never gain the hearts and souls of the Iranian people.” Grin Hmm ]grin]

Not surprised he doesn't know the difference between male and female. That man is a senile puppet.

OvaHere · 02/03/2022 18:46

@wingscrow assuming you're new to this and not just here to be provocative (we do get a lot of that) you should probably familiarise yourself with some of the many threads here that explain in intricate detail what the problems are.

Many are to do with English or Scottish law so if you are from the US or elsewhere I would start with the threads on women's sports (notably L Thomas).

Or the threads about women's prisons where women in many countries are being locked up with violent male offenders, many whom have raped and murdered women. Those two areas have relevance everywhere and the potential to impact women globally.

Delphinium20 · 02/03/2022 18:47

My DD lost a top spot on her sport team to a transgirl, which meant no opportunity to play with the elite team (they only took top girls from each lower team) and because I'm in the US that means she has fewer opportunities for a scholarship in that sport.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 02/03/2022 18:51

@IvyTwines

If God gave them all that potential, why did God also give them 'wrong bodies' that require all that very lucrative surgery to 'fix'? A very peculiar God, that American God.
A very good question. And one that will not be answered.

Yeah, yeah...it will never happen.

Who actually in these threads has ever been threatened, abused or have their rights denied by a transgender person?

Me, for one. Because of a traumatic assault when i was a child, I can't stand being in a small space with a man blocking my exit. When a man in a dress strolled into the women's toilets just ahead of me, I couldn't go in. I got a bit of the stress response anyway, just through having narrowly avoided the risk.

Don't tell me that's not a denial of my rights.

Wingscrow, this is exactly the problem. Male violence, male self-entitlement. A man's belief that women exist for his use is not diminished when he puts on a skirt and make-up.

Although strong resistance by women made the UK government drop its plan to legalise self-ID in 2018, it was too late to prevent police, the NHS, health authorities and businesses encouraged by Stonewall behaving as if it had been legalised.

And you realise that self-ID allows every man to enter women's single-sex spaces, because very few people have the guts to challenge them.

So now men feel safe in breaching women's and girls' boundaries. Whether they believe they're in the wrong body or not makes no difference at all.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 02/03/2022 19:28

Every man presenting as a woman taking up spaces on programmes designed to increase female representation in STEM subjects or politics, or being shortlisted on prizes for women or taking a woman’s place in a woman’s sports team, every single one, every single bloody one, is firstly directly denying a biological woman of a place and secondly indirectly telling all biological women that their needs matter less than that of a man who imagines himself to be a woman because they feel like one (however one “feels” like a woman)

MangyInseam · 02/03/2022 20:48

I cannot imagine that Biden would be at all amenable to walking back on any elements of the bill relating to trangender issues. The Democrats and Biden in particular have made it too much front and center in their rhetoric, there simply isn't any space for them to do so.

But it is amazing to me that they don't realize what a vote loser this is.

These state bills that they are so upset about are popping up around schools in particular are appearing, and appeal to people, because they have become so inappropriate in terms of what they are saying to kids. Not just about gender issues but sexuality, race and so on. It's not that different than the UK in that sense - when your 11 year old is coming home and telling you they are an asexual lesbian who wants neutral pronouns, maybe you just decide the school is not a place kids should hear about sexuality. You don't need to for discriminating against gays and lesbians to take that view.

I think Biden could end up as a one term president if they keep pushing this stuff.

Kilimanjaro97 · 02/03/2022 21:23

@MangyInseam

Biden will not want any amendments to the current text. But without them it is highly unlikely ever to receive Senate approval. Compromise on the imprecise language around sex and gender could tip the balance and attract sufficient Republican support to get it through. Biden has made similar compromises in the past and prides himself on his ability to manage the political machine in the US to achieve the best possible outcome.

But it may well be that things are so polarised that this is impossible. Pity, because it will perpetuate legal discrimination against women, LGBT, people of colour etc.

SunniDelite · 03/03/2022 11:09

@wingscrow Nobody on here is saying that all transwomen are a danger, it's just that some are and how are we supposed to differentiate? and let's face it, what's to stop men just pretending to "be" women in order to get into female spaces? As we all know, men never lie or take advantage, do they?

There you go, @wingscrow now there will be no need to say why you can't possibly imagine why many women feel as we do.

Can anyone explain why the US equality legislation doesn't list sex as a protected characteristic?

waterbabys · 03/03/2022 21:55

I'm a Catholic and know plenty of old school homophobic Catholics who are suddenly gung ho for gender ideology. Strikes me as gay/lesbians aren't palatable to them but they can get on board with 'transing the gay away'!

RobynMyEmployer · 03/03/2022 22:03

Hate to say it but I can't see that Trump would've entertained any of this nonsense!

quixote9 · 04/03/2022 04:19

I haven't read all the comments so I may be repeating what's already been said. Pathetically, in the US, there is zero understanding of women's rights or trans rights. It's All TWAW All The Time.

It's not big money making Biden say that. Only Repubs support separate sports and spaces for women. But that's because they want women permanently boxed into a Norman Rockwell cartoon. Not because they're in the least on the side of actual women.

Biden couldn't support women when TRAs disagree because the whole Dem party and votership would come crashing down on him.

The fault here is really with the people, who can't find their ass with both hands when it comes to this topic. The Republicans are for separate spaces, in a maximally sexist way, so everybody else has stampeded off to the TWAW side because, obviously, the exact opposite of anything Republican is right. Stands to reason. Hmm

@RobynMyEmployer

He would have if it appealed to his base. He would sell his grandma if it seemed like it would get him popularity. There’s no point attributing any virtue to Trump.
Grammarnut · 04/03/2022 10:01

I suspect Biden's real agenda was expressed when he revoked the 'bathroom' orders that kept men who ID as women out of women's public lavatories.

Delphinium20 · 04/03/2022 17:19

Comparing Trump (encouraged an insurrection, currently being investigated for fraud and friend of Putin) to Biden is ridiculous and shows a very limited understanding of American politics. Biden is wrong on gender identity and allowing men into women's spaces. He's right about many other things including other rights for women like abortion. I don't regret my vote for him one bit - the alternative was Trump and imagine what would be happening in Europe this very minute if Trump was the US president.
