Ant n' Dec

^I’ve got two teenage daughters, and I really expected that, by now, we would have sorted out equality and respect and the same pay for the same work. We’ve had two female prime ministers, for pity’s sake, and it was Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert, who developed the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab. Do we now really need cheeky prime-time presenters Ant and Dec sashaying about in drag?

Now, at this point, I will probably be pilloried for my epic humour fail. Touché, I’ve never found men dressing up as women either clever or funny. Ingenious, maybe – but boring, too, because they are always godawful divas, spiteful termagants or sexually rapacious caricatures^

Great article

BattyOrange · 24/02/2022 23:23

Absolutely agree.

I'm always astounded that people (white men, largely) can't/don't make the connection between between balckface and womanface....

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2022 23:48

I can't read the article but blimey, that photo...
Is it too much to hope that ant&dec jumping on the drag bandwagon will make it obvious it's ridiculous and not at all edgy or sexy or whatever the heck it's meant to be?

suean · 25/02/2022 00:48

Drag is fun and light hearted it’s in no way making fun of women or belittling them. It’s a way of expression and over exaggeration.

suean · 25/02/2022 00:49

I’ve never heard of ‘women face’ before what does this mean?
EeeICouldRipATissue · 25/02/2022 01:01

Wot, another thread?!
Wargggh 😁🤣
Or just plugging an opinion piece behind a pay wall?
Not all of us can read that.
How the hell Ant and Dec dressing up as drag queens makes it harder for me to be me and a woman is anyone's guess.
Although I'm sure someone will be along with some - - batshit-- explanation soon

What's wrong with that photo?
I think they look good

BadHairDayExpert · 25/02/2022 02:23

suean tis in the article (you can all get past paywall by scrolling)
“womanface” means presenting as female when you haven’t had a female’s lived experience

I enjoy RPDR (probably because the glitz, glam, sequins, feathers and heels are the complete opposite to how I present, so I see it as escapist entertainment like Dynasty and Dallas, back in the day. It is for me like panto or burlesque. The make up is artistic expression that can take two hours. It is so big, so OTT, so out there that I do not see it as parodying women as such - no woman I know looks like that apart from maybe Dolly Parton and Victoria Scone (deliberate career choices) and showgirls. Doubt any of them present like that when not performing. Appropriating femininity? Only if you equate femininity with said heels, lipstick etc which I do not.

I digress. The Billy Joel riff was cleverly done

JK Rowling, Safe Space, Lia Thomas, swimming race,
Hashtag Maya, Epstein, Duke of York disgraced the Queen,
Cancel culture, Terf threat, Stonewall hasn’t spoken yet,
Birthing people, womxn too, share your refuge and your loo.
Rank and file misogyny, legal self-identity, state your pronouns, shut your mouth, all your rights are heading south.

It was! I enjoyed that.

Franca123 · 26/02/2022 18:27

Is this peak drag?

ChopinBoard · 26/02/2022 18:55

This must signify that drag is nonlonger 'cool', surely. If so, good.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 26/02/2022 22:17

How?
Surely means more like it, its becoming more mainstream.

Seldomseen · 26/02/2022 22:43

Maybe someone could help me explain it to a six year old girl. Here's our conversation whilst watching Ant and Dec:
6 yo: Why is that man trying to dress as a woman? He looks scary. He's got huge boobs!
Me: Not sure honey. They are a bit like clowns. They're supposed to be funny.
6 yo: I don't like clowns. This is not funny. Ant and Dec look scary.
So, what is the point of it? Is it supposed to be funny? I'm not bothered by it either way but why is it everywhere - isn't it supposed to be adult entertainment?
