extract

A female World Cup official is facing a sentence of 100 lashes and seven years in jail for 'extramarital sex' after she reported being raped while working in Qatar.

She was working for the World Cup organising committee when she complained that she was raped by an associate who broke into her apartment and threatened to kill her.

She reported the June 6, 2021 attack to the Qatari authorities, which responded by accusing her of having an affair and charged her with 'extramarital sex', which is illegal in the Gulf state.

She was told by lawyers that one way of avoiding conviction was to marry her attacker but instead decided to flee the country, leaving behind what she called her 'dream job'.

The charges against her are still valid and she is expected to be sentenced in absentia on March 6.

I am totally shocked that the decision to hold the World Cup in Qatar is having a huge impact on female staff. Shocked, I tell you.

I see the myth of virginity tests raise their ugly head again.

Horrible situation for that poor woman to be in.

Well, the World Cup was held in Russia last time, and in 2026 will be held in Mexico (as well as USA & Canada), so I don’t think the officials give a flying fuck about women, colour me shocked. I imagine that all they want women for is to wash the kit.
My heart goes out to that woman, she’s lost her dream job because of a shitty entitled man.

There is so much wrong with the World Cup and this needs to be a bigger headline. Fans aren't safe to attend and it's only being held there for money.

And are rich famous powerful football players and officials backing her up and speaking on her behalf and saying...?[tumbleweed]

OvaHere · 23/02/2022 09:47

I read about this earlier. Horrifying. They should not be working in any country that puts their employees at risk in this way.

As the above poster says I expect mostly tumbleweed as a response though.
