John Witherow, the Editor of The Times, was interviewed at length on today's The Media Show on Radio 4. Towards the end of the interview (maybe 5 minutes from the end) he was asked about "the gender debate":

An aware and a reassuring response from Witherow.

Yes I came on here to see if anyone else had heard it. I liked his response and support of what Janice Turner is doing.
The presenter seemed to feel JT's stance is problematic, but I would be interested to know what feedback the media show get on this. I suspect R4 listeners may be more supportive of JT than the presenter imagines.

Is anyone else getting "Sorry, this programme is not currently available"?

nauticant · 16/02/2022 17:40

There's often a lag of an hour or so between the end of the programme and it being made available for streaming.

BathTangle, the presenter was Katie Razzall who as far as I'm aware is reasonable about issues like free speech. I'm hoping she was adopting a mildly challenging position to deal with accusations of being too cosy with Witherow.

I listened to this he was wonderful, calm, clear concise and left the interviewer spluttering.

BathTangle · 16/02/2022 17:50

I hope you're right @nauticant. I found the previous presenters of the Media Show (Steve Hewlett I think, and Amol Rajan) very thoughtful interviewers so I'll keep fingers crossed that Katie Razzall is similar.

Puddycatfan · 16/02/2022 18:06

I was listening and did a little cheer!

SpiderVersed · 16/02/2022 18:07

For those who want to listen, it's on at 23 minutes

CompleteGinasaur · 16/02/2022 18:11

Thanks @nauticant, I'll catch it when I get back later.

Most of our readers agree [with Janice] Grin

. I suspect R4 listeners may be more supportive of JT than the presenter imagines.

Isn't this always the case?

ScribblingPixie · 16/02/2022 20:14

I like that he said they've attracted women readers away from other newspapers because of The Times' and Janice's stance. Choke on that, Guardian.

ClaudiusTheGod · 16/02/2022 20:31

It was encouraging and heartening to hear him.

MMAMPWGHAP · 16/02/2022 20:49

Comments on pieces in The Times even tangentially related to sex/gender debate are always very gc. Guardian seems to me to have less and less places where one can comment on anything. more like propaganda.

What is going on with the Graun? I think I read somewhere they were American owned these days, but surely that shouldn't automatically mean they have to trash their proud history, and so quickly?

Goatsaregreat · 16/02/2022 23:06

I feel slightly sad at what has happened at the Guardian - but then I get their bleating "you've read 58 articles this year " message and I remember all my years of having a monthly subscription to them and I just think - you fuckwits. You lost me to the Times because you abandoned your once proud investigative history and turned into a narrow whinge fest
