Rights watchdog 'should lose status' over trans row

Stonewall and Good Law Project (aka JM's vanity law project) are now trying to threaten the EHRC by demanding that the UN revokes the Equality and Human Rights Commission's (EHRC) status as an independent group.

Apparently "this would prevent it from being able to make representations at the UN Human Rights Council, or its committees on human rights."....

They accuse the EHRC of "being 'excessively' influenced by the UK government in the appointments of the chair and board members."....

"Jolyon Maugham, of The Good Law Project, said: "The EHRC is subject to a level of oversight and micro-management from the department which is just not consistent with being a UN Human Rights Institution.""....

"The submission accuses Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who is also the women and equalities minister, of making "politically motivated" appointments to the EHRC."....

"Since Ms Truss' appointments took up their posts, the submission letter alleges there has been a marked change in the EHRC's stance on Scotland's planned changes to the Gender Recognition act."....

"Nancy Kelley, CEO of Stonewall, said she believed there was "credible evidence" that the EHRC no longer met the criteria of a national human rights institution."....

""The politicisation of the UK's human rights body has placed trans people in the firing line, but this attempt to create a hierarchy of human rights in the UK is a very real threat to everyone, particularly those of us protected by the Equality Act.""....

So basically now that the EHRC has disassociated itself from lobbying group, Stonewall's Diversity Scheme and has taken an independent stance not overly influenced by Stonewall, Stonewall and GLP have taken to threatening the EHRC.

We didn't see Stonewall and GLP complaining of a lack of government independence when the EHRC were paying for Stonewall advice or when a Conservative MP appointed ex-Stonewall Chair David Isaac to head up the EHRC.

The EHRC's remit is to support all the protected characteristics, not just Stonewall and JM's personal demands.

Stonewall's way of operating really does seem more and more like a protection racket..... Nice human rights organisation you got there - shame if it were to lose it's status.

I hope this action serves as a lesson to other organisations paying for Stonewall lobbying.

...this attempt to create a hierarchy of human rights in the UK is a very real threat to everyone, particularly those of us protected by the Equality Act.

Christ.
Accusations being admissions and DARVO being quite strong in this one.

highame · 11/02/2022 06:27

They are very shouty aren't they? I wonder when reason will kick back in? People have got so used to hyperbole and obfuscation instead of discussion. The secretive way 'getting ahead of the law' was used and the offence the gender ideologists take when women want to be included in debate, is beyond belief.

Clymene · 11/02/2022 06:29

I honestly think he's mentally unwell. Such a god complex.

Ben Hunte has also written a new article on vice - EHRC wants to ban trans people from bathrooms !!!!!!! (Sic)

What he means is EHRC wants to I hold equality legislation

tootyfruitypickle · 11/02/2022 06:37

I just read this . I'm really tempted to email my ceo over this and ask they we leave their scheme, but I'll probably think twice once I've had coffee Confused

delurkasaurus · 11/02/2022 06:38

We've had "getting ahead of the law". Is that old hat now, and is it instead "getting ahead of the news"? There is no review yet is there?

Anyone seen the 19-page submission?

They really are anxious to shut up anyone who disagrees with them, aren't they?

ScreamingMeMe · 11/02/2022 06:43

Isn't the UN heavily influenced by TRA groups though? This could go either way.

Iknowitisheresomewhere · 11/02/2022 07:05

Covered on Radio 4 headlines on the Today program.

The GLP has found a nice cash cow by jumping on the blue and pink bandwagon.

Doyouthinkeirsaurus · 11/02/2022 07:08

Today Prog going to interviewing Stonewall this hour, announced just fore the news.

Artichokeleaves · 11/02/2022 07:22

If it isn't wholly captured and controlled by a political lobby it isn't fit for (their) purpose?

Yeah, this is a beautiful illustration to the govt that this lobby has been allowed to get way, way, way too big for its boots. And is really a bit odd in its thinking.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 11/02/2022 07:23

@CatsOperatingInGangs

The GLP has found a nice cash cow by jumping on the blue and pink bandwagon.
Stonewall and GLP are remarkably well funded with all of their contributors.

Given UN Women, I'm not optimistic of a decent arbitration there.

WarriorN · 11/02/2022 07:26

This is a significant step that will certainly backfire.

Enough journalists support the ehrc's points if view; this will give them weeks of fodder, spelling it out more clearly for those not yet in the know, and there's enough evidence that the ehrc's stance is legitimate.

When is Cass due?

Artichokeleaves · 11/02/2022 07:28

Nancy Kelley..... "this attempt to create a hierarchy of human rights in the UK is a very real threat to everyone"

Kelley and Stonewall have no problem at all in creating a hierarchy of human rights! That's exactly what they want! The whingeing is that impartiality gets in the way of their desired hierarchy where TQ+ trump absolutely everyone else and all other protected characteristics are subordinated. Particularly female people who should be barely allowed to breathe!

Has she really gone so far into this rabbit hole that she doesn't realise what an absolute twit she is making of herself in claiming this?!

WarriorN · 11/02/2022 07:29

The EHRC’s stance seeks to strip trans people of legal protections

Well that's a lie to start with.

Iknowitisheresomewhere · 11/02/2022 07:31

I am less confident about the outcome than if it was a UK court adjudicating. But this does seem a bit like ‘playing the man and not the ball’. They aren’t addressing the substance of what the EHRC has said, they are saying ‘they changed their minds and this must be political and we don’t like it’. I would have more respect if they tried to address exactly what their viewpoint is, which I think they would find difficult as the EHRC has been reasonable and measured.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/02/2022 07:33

This is getting very interesting. It feels like the TRAs are beginning to realise that everyone can see the Emperor has no clothes.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 11/02/2022 07:34

I think this is a mistake. The UN will tread carefully in interfering in matters like this. It could be seen as meddling in a matter of national sovereignty. The EHRC was fulfilling its remit and considering all protected characteristics and publishing guidance. Does this really sound like a thing they would risk a diplomatic row over.

This really looks like toys out of the pram.

WarriorN · 11/02/2022 07:48

WarriorN · 11/02/2022 07:49

On radio 4 now.

Iknowitisheresomewhere · 11/02/2022 07:50

Not a great introduction because I don’t think the EHRC are seeking to ‘reduce the rights of trans people’.

110APiccadilly · 11/02/2022 07:51

"particularly those of us protected by the Equality Act."

This is weird phrasing. I would think everyone is protected by the Equality Act one way or another, no?

NecessaryScene · 11/02/2022 07:51

Stonewall's kind of stepped in it here, haven't they? Isn't a large chunk of their business being "experts" on the Equality Act, and providing training etc?

How could anyone employ them to do that if they're coming out against it? If the Nolan report was bad, this is worse.

WarriorN · 11/02/2022 07:51

Shocking?

The EHRC realised the issues. That's what's shocking. That it wasn't recognised before
