' ...The gender wars are a nightmare.

“I support people to be happy and be what they want. But they want me to call myself a Cis woman (cisgender – meaning your current gender is that which was presumed for you at birth). I’m just a woman.'

Pity she didn’t take the opportunity to explain further why cis is offensive. That gender is merely stereotype, and that women are not a subset of our own sex. That TWANW.
Perhaps she was afraid of a pile on, but it was a missed chance to educate the readers.

It was a very brief mention, but it's a start. It's good to see weel kent figures saying 'no, thank you'.

Good for her. She'll get a pile on from the normal anti women bigots anyway, no matter how mild her comments but she's just speaking up for the millions of women quietly horrified at what's being done to us without our consent.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 08/02/2022 12:36

Well, thank fuck for that.

Bloody love Liz.

Slothtoes · 08/02/2022 13:06

Go Liz!

DomesticatedZombie · 08/02/2022 13:49

Increasingly what I see is women avoiding the subject (gender) altogether. They don't mention it, they delberately don't get involved. I don't blame them, given what tends to happen.

We seem to be developing a new kind of minefield that women have to tiptoe through, avoiding trigger words and certain subjects carefully.

She's an old-fashioned feminist with her head screwed on and she's been through a hell of a lot. I'm not surprised (but very happy) to see she's got no time for this nonsense.

Oh good for Liz - always feel so grateful to anyone prepared to put their head above the parapet.

I think its brevity is powerful, actually. Like, 'this is barely worth talking about beyond stating the obvious, if I have to.'
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 08/02/2022 15:57

That word "just" is a purposeful one, isn't it?

Agree, with you, @IntermittentParps she could say lots - but she can't be arsed because trying to get nuance out of nonsense is not very interesting.

Somanysocks · 08/02/2022 16:03

'anti women bigots' - will have to remember that phrase for when it's needed.

Babdoc · 08/02/2022 17:23

IntermittentParps, it’s only powerful if you already know what cis means, and are already aware of the attack on women’s rights. I feel an opportunity was missed to inform all the thousands of women who have no idea yet what is going on.

TBF a) the article does explain 'cis' and b) who knows how much else she said that didn't make it into the finished thing.
