Piece in the Telegraph

"Lecturers at a leading university are being given guidance on neopronouns, which include emoji labels and catgender, where someone identifies as a feline.

The University of Bristol has provided guidance for its staff on "using pronouns at work", urging them to declare in verbal introductions and email signatures whether they use he/him, she/her or they/them, to support transgender students.

But unlike myriad pronoun manuals on other campuses, Bristol lecturers are also directed to neopronouns which include “emojiself pronouns”, where colourful digital icons - commonplace on social media - are used to represent gender in written and spoken conversation.

It comes as the Russell Group university begins a landmark court battle on Monday with a feminist PhD student, Raquel Rosario Sanchez, who is suing for sex discrimination after an alleged two-year campaign of bullying by transgender activists on campus."

it goes on ...

"Bristol’s guide explains that some people use "neopronouns such as Ze/Zir/Zirs". A website linked to by Bristol's guide, explains that neopronouns are third-person pronouns that are not officially recognised in the language they are used in.

This directs to a webpage by LGBTA Wiki, which says these are used by those who feel their gender is beyond the male or female binary, and lists "emoji pronouns" as an example.

Staff are told on the website: "Emojiself pronouns are a subcategory of nounself pronouns, which are pronouns that, instead of using letters, utilize emojis.

"These pronouns are not intended to be pronounced out loud and are only intended for online communication. In spoken conversation one may or may not use pronouns that are based on the emoji.""

Emoji pronouns! What's the point if it's for written communication? Confused

ChristinaXYZ · 06/02/2022 20:00

I suppose @Marmm that you might be expected to respect such pronouns when writing about a particular student. In an email to another member of staff perhaps. I suppose they would expect staff to then report each other for failing to get the emoji pronoun right.

What a place to work and study!

Catgender?!!! Grin

God , what a sick joke. Hilarious if this was a play or a sitcom. But we’re entrusting the education of a whole generation to numpties like this.

I'm old enough to remember when Bristol and Durham were the unis of choice if you didn't get in Oxford or Cambridge. Sad really.

Another one my DCs won’t be applying to…what a load of bollocks.

Datun · 06/02/2022 20:35

It just gets more and more ludicrous. Do they not realise how they are making themselves look?

What happens if you've got 400 students with completely different pronouns? There's going come a day where you're going to have to create a hierarchy.

It's utterly hinged. this is a Russell group University.

Adatwistscientist · 06/02/2022 20:37

Identifies as a feline GrinGrin sorry but surely that's the end of the entire movement? Do Bristol now provide mixed sex toilets with litter trays in them? Scratch post in every lecture theatre? Ban on laser pointers?

Oh the fucking shame. An actual university.

I don't know whether to 😂 or 😢 as for 🐱🐾🐈🐾🐾😺🐈🐾😹🐾🐈 that's barking

Coconutmeg · 06/02/2022 20:57

Using a emoji as ID when talking about someone from a device? Sort of like having a sign name in sign language?
💩

NancyDrawed · 06/02/2022 20:58

Why do people feel the need to do the neo pronouns thing?

Neo pronouns are just such utter bollocks. In the end, we are all human, all male or female, including anyone who may have a DSD. Ultimately we are all either he or she, regardless of how we might feel about ourselves. I genuinely struggle to understand how this has got such traction.

IKeptYouLikeAnOath · 06/02/2022 21:01

The diversity person at BU has a fucking insane amount of power. Or a wicked sense of humour.

Fuck me, the world is absolutely hideous in so many regards right now.

JellySaurus · 06/02/2022 21:19

Fine, you want to use specific pronouns to describe yourself, go ahead. But why should I? Why should anyone else?

Imagine a Turkish person for whom English is her second language, insisting that English speakers only ever refer to her using Turkish pronouns. Justification being that she thinks of herself as Turkish and she thinks in Turkish.

Nonsense.

Iwishihadariver · 06/02/2022 21:24

Well as a working class thicko who didn't get to university because of having too great a time in the 6th form instead of studying (oops) I think this is a right pile of steaming shite and I'm right glad I went to t' university of life instead 😊

crispsarny · 06/02/2022 21:43

I read things like this & start to wonder, who’s really behind all this, whats the reasons, end goals etc. Are foreign powers pushing it to cause dissent in other countries? Russell Group Unis heavily funded by China www.spectator.co.uk/article/calls-for-universities-to-declare-china-funding

pleasehoover · 06/02/2022 21:48

What an absolute load of rubbish. What sane adult could write that policy with a straight face?

LemonSwan · 06/02/2022 21:49

I would let them get on with it. The more they make gender about something other than sex related the more we can reclaim relevant words for their actual meaning.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 06/02/2022 21:57

There's also this:

"The webpage adds: "For example, someone who is catgender may use nya/nyan pronouns."

Catgender, it says, is someone who "strongly identifies" with cats or other felines and those who "may experience delusions relating to being a cat or other feline". The word nyan is Japanese for "meow"."

So - the webpage literally says if someone identifies as "catgender" this may be because they are experiencing delusions. And yet academic staff are still expected to humour this and refer to them as the Japanese word for "meow/meowself". If they get it "wrong" they are supposed to "thank the person for correcting you, apologise swiftly, and use the correct pronouns going forward" - and one suspects they are at risk of being reported if they don't oblige.

WTF is it coming to if a university is requiring this?!

HomeHomeInTheRange · 06/02/2022 21:59

My Dc at Bristol have no meaningful contact with any real life teaching staff anyway as they have declined to come out from behind their computer screens snd just press ‘go’ on the lecture they recorded last year, so maybe they should all rename themselves after F key functions or something.

JellySaurus · 06/02/2022 22:15

The webpage adds: "For example, someone who is catgender may use nya/nyan pronouns."...The word nyan is Japanese for "meow"

Nya/nyan means something quite different in English. Ever heard a kid chanting "Nya-nyan-nya-nya-nyan"? More commonly spelled "Ner-ner-ner-ner-ner".

People are being mocked and they cannot see it.

Where are the grown-ups?

Linguini · 06/02/2022 22:20

This is exactly why everyone, everywhere should always say,
"I don't need to know your pronouns because I don't use third person pronouns".

BrizzleWest · 06/02/2022 23:03

I work at the University of Bristol and have heard nothing of this. We had a request a while ago to consider putting our pronouns on our email signature but it wasn't compulsory (I certainly have no intention of doing it).

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 07/02/2022 19:21

Dear Lord! A lot of DDS contemporaries wanted to study veterinary science at Bristol,as apparently,it's well regarded. I didn't not think that any of them got a place as it's so competitive ( mercifully for them).I can just imagine the faces of farm bred vet students being told to take this absolute crap seriously.Grin
