It's not online yet - I don't know why. But you can read it here:

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/02/2022 19:33

Bloody hell!!!! That burn is scorching 🔥🔥🔥

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 06/02/2022 19:35

oh that's fun

heterosexuality is in trouble is it? I predict it'll muddle through

I'll say it again

HOW THE HELL DO THESE PEOPLE THINK BABIES ARE MADE

and the revelation that women enjoy sex. good to get the cleared up. what a numpty Laurie Penny is.

Sophoclesthefox · 06/02/2022 19:38

That is a cracker Grin

Perhaps a sexy weekend in Berlin would help Laurie get over it?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/02/2022 19:40

LP is the classic student enfant terrible thinking that the best way to tackle a subject is to disagree with (or possibly not even read) anything written about a subject before 10 years ago

The trouble is LP is in their mid thirties not a first year humanities student

ANewCreation · 06/02/2022 19:41

'For the reader, especially the reader who has never read a book or a newspaper, never watched any television or seen a film, Penny has all sorts of revelations.
For instance there are now more women in the "male workplace" than for centuries.'

Plus she is spot on that there is more than a whiff of Rick from The Young Ones about Penny's grandiloquent title. I think that this might be one of those things that once you see it, you can't unsee it...

😁

“I’m troubled by the word “wet””. Brutal and hilarious.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/02/2022 19:50

LP has done things you never have you know!! Grin

These reviews are excellent!

Waitwhat23 · 06/02/2022 20:51

I swear that whenever I see someone using 'crypto-fascist' seriously, I think of Red Dwarf Timeslides episode -

Younger Lister - "I'm not into dosh. I hate money, I loathe possessions -- It's just so... crypto-fascist!"
Older Lister - "Will you stop saying everything's crypto-facist! You're making me sound like I was a right git."

Goatsaregreat · 06/02/2022 20:57

Yet another gift that keeps on giving.

ValancyRedfern · 06/02/2022 21:05

Laurie Penny's book has been worth it for the reviews. Sarah Ditum's is still my personal favourite, but this runs it a close second.

IKeptYouLikeAnOath · 06/02/2022 21:12

So agree. The reviews have been amazing reading Grin

JulesJules · 06/02/2022 22:16

Oof. 🔥

Has Penny had any good reviews?

HobnobsChoice · 07/02/2022 00:28

@WhereYouLeftIt

Has Penny had any good reviews?
Hopefully from the person who shared a sexy Weekend in Berlin with them...

Oh you mean the book?

HobnobsChoice · 07/02/2022 00:31

Even publisher's weekly, not known for its take on feminist divides gives it a poor review

Clymene · 07/02/2022 06:25

I bet whoever commissioned this at Bloomsbury is feeling a bit anxious.

And yes, Penny is exactly like Rick. I can't believe I've not noticed before. Once seen, never unseen

VoleClock · 07/02/2022 07:56

And bonus points to Rachel for using the word "swizz"

Clymene · 07/02/2022 07:59

And thank you so much for sharing @RoyalCorgi - a joyful read Smile

WarriorN · 07/02/2022 09:36

Oooff. 😬

Rubidium · 07/02/2022 09:45

The review is on The Grauniad website now. Book Of The Day!

WarriorN · 07/02/2022 09:54

Opening line of "poorly researched" is probably one of the worst things you can read of your non fiction creation.

WarriorN · 07/02/2022 09:58

Seems to be one of the main things said about it though; I can't help thinking they's mainly written it based on their personal experiences and views on twitter.

I wonder if there's a generation of writers who missed the clamping down in universities of copying everything off the internet and from other student's work?

I'm faintly grateful I was physically forced to look up a book and study it critically via the hand typed cards in the university library pre social media. (Small library for our subject. Bigger one was computerised.)
