Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My feminist society at Sussex uni spent our social night at a strip club!

Just how difficult is it to create a real feminist society at Uni?
We are crying out for a radfem soc at Sussex.

I'll put the link to my tweet where you can see the video of the Feminist Society at Sussex watching and cheering on a stripper.

Please share my tweet, we need a strategy for rescuing feminism at university, or is it too late?

Sussex University? The erstwhile home of Prof. Stock? Surely that's just a gender woo woo basket case?

FOJN · 05/02/2022 19:44

Sussex_femsoc says "all people welcome: intersectional space", it doesn't scream centering women and usually means "sex worker positive" which effectively endorses sexual exploitation of women. It's fashionable feminism for women who don't want to piss men off.

I'm sure there will be other like minded feminists at Sussex Uni but I imagine they're harder to find since Kathleen Stock was harassed out of her job.

FFSFFSFFS · 05/02/2022 19:51

Jeepers I just watched it. How depressing. Watching women strip for the titilation of a drunken crowd. You go girls.

Arabella94 · 05/02/2022 19:53

But surely femsoc going to a strip club is too far, even for them. I'm not sure how we'll-received a women's liberation soc would be at Sussex. I only know of another 5 radfem students here.

I'm speechless!

Do go ahead and create your women's liberation group. We are constantly told that our type of feminists are middle class, middle aged and I guess middle spreading! You prove that young women are interested in the fight for women and girls rights.

anothersmahedmug · 05/02/2022 19:56

5 ... with you that makes 6 ... the entire uk GC community!

anothersmahedmug · 05/02/2022 19:56

But yeah it's pathetic liberal feminist thinking

FFSFFSFFS · 05/02/2022 19:58

It appears that is a female focussed strip club though - which appears to mean all the music is by women and in act of revolution the strippers are women. Male allies very welcome in their female safe space though.

Arabella94 · 05/02/2022 19:58

Well I'm young, very working class, half gypsy 🤷‍♀️😂 I guess I don't fit that mould.

Not only am I the first woman in my very large family to go to college or uni, I am the first person to go to uni, not even the men went.

It's frustrating when they call our movement a white middle class movement, I am a radical feminist because I have experienced at every level why we need liberation. There's no alternative.

Maybe the Cambridge Radical Feminist Network twitter.com/camradfems?s=21 or Oxford Feminist Union twitter.com/oxfeministunion?s=21 could offer some advice on setting one up?

Arabella94 · 05/02/2022 20:07

This venue isn't a women's venue.
Their insta says:
Non-binary, queer people and male people welcome 🤷‍♀️😂

The venue is called Cherry Bomb Brighton

There's an AMA by Raquel Rosario Sanchez tomorrow. Maybe if you post questions on the thread she can give some pointers too:

FFSFFSFFS · 05/02/2022 20:16

Oh yes I read
Their blurb - they say it is women focused - which as
Far
As I can work out meant music by women and female strippers. Well - I imagine there is probably a drag Queen who takes enter stage at important moments. But indeed men are also welcome to this female safe space haven….

WinterDeWinter · 05/02/2022 20:16

Thank you though, for caring, and for being prepared to stand up for women's liberation. I salute you and am grateful on behalf of myself and my daughters.

CaptainSmartarse · 05/02/2022 20:19

Middle class pretend feminists objectifying working class women .Not a new thing but still utterly vile. What larks eh ? I feel for you @Arabella94 , that uni is completely captured. Are they trying to impress the in Ladz?
I hope this brings more likeminded female students together who are sick of this shitshow. 💐

Arabella94 · 05/02/2022 20:24

It feels like I'll be walking the Plank, it still won't stop me from trying. Even if there are only 5 of us, we need to start somewhere.

Oh God, they are those type of feminists who've been convinced (by men) that stripping is actually female empowerment. Hmm

Not only am I the first woman in my very large family to go to college or uni, I am the first person to go to uni, not even the men went. well done on this @Arabella94. My DD will be the first girl in my family on my mums side to do A Levels, let alone uni!

Voice0fReason · 05/02/2022 20:26

I despair for the women who have been taken in by this crap.

It feels good to be here. You must be so proud of her 🥰

Applying for uni is how I was first introduced to feminism. I didn't even know there was such thing as radical feminism before uni. I met a friend through volunteering in refugee camps, little did I know she was a radfem. I explained to her how much I really wanted to go to university but that I struggled with understanding what a personal statement was. She helped me every step of the way, I would not be at university if it weren't for her. Of course, the second gift she gave me was finding sisterhood. Gosh I love that woman!

Second this and wishing you all the best with finding real sisterhood at university and in your studies. Young women like you give me high hopes for the future.
EmmaH2022 · 05/02/2022 20:39

Why did they go though?

Alekto · 05/02/2022 20:53

I'm another one pleased to see young women rejecting the bollocks they've been told is feminism. Good on you Arabella94.

I was the first in my working class family to get a degree. It was through the Open Uni as a mature student though so I never actually went. Don't believe the middle class/ middle aged/ white stereotypes they try to attach to us. We're just women.

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 05/02/2022 20:58

Depressing but unsurprising.

I'm impressed by your achievements op, congratulations. I'm glad you met your rad FEM friend who helped you achieve your dreams. Perhaps the baton has been passed.

So pleased we have people like you in the younger generation. Otherwise I would despair.

EsmaCannonball · 05/02/2022 21:32

I know someone who paid her way through university by working as a lap-dancer (after her family threw her out for wanting to continue in education instead of marrying a man she'd never met before). The club she worked in was particularly exclusive and expensive. I remember her saying that the women who worked there despised the women who patronised the club even more than the men and that dancing for them felt more humiliating because it really enforced their lower status. I can't imagine getting enjoyment out of dangling money in front of someone and making them dance. Total power-trip.
