Iwish has nailed it; Bindel has campaigned at grass roots level in British feminism for years. And across the world. Trafficking, domestic violence etc.

Good interview re differences between British and US feminism

I'd never heard of Laurie till the last year or so and generally all about identity. Their own in particular. I'd love to hear more about their actual grassroots activism for women if I'm wrong.

This arguing over privilege comes from the privileged and it does my head in.

Look, I'm not LP's biggest fan but I was at uni with her/them and she is definitely not heterosexual. Just because she settled with a bloke doesn’t stop her being bisexual or pansexual.

That's a fair point, If you're bisexual you can have exclusive committed relationships with either at different times. Or only have relationships with one sex but be attracted to both.

senua · 27/01/2022 16:15

I love the repeated "they is".Grin

WarriorN · 27/01/2022 16:19

I'm finding it hard to accept that a book called "Sexual Revolution:
Modern Fascism and the Feminist Fightback" is a feminist tome when the author has been very publicly demanding about pronouns.

@Iwishihadariver

But Bobmortimerstrout, Laurie Penney is making a whole career out of centering theirself in their outpourings to their audience. They is their own muse , model what have you. So the only way to critique their work is to focus on their focus.
Yep. Great article. Much needed this afternoon.
WarriorN · 27/01/2022 16:25

Apparently the publisher made the fuss about pronouns not Penny, though there's been back up on twitter about pronoun priority.

I'm no fan of LP and agree with Suzanne Moore's points, but good lord her writing style is irritating. She sounds so arch and snarkily pleased with herself!

SunnyDelite · 27/01/2022 16:25

"Sneering and aggressive"- the description of any TRA article about female non-believers ever.....

TheExtraGuineaPig · 27/01/2022 16:34

I really enjoyed that.

My son (year 7) says there are at least 12 they/them pronoun'd non binary females in his year - of around 65 girls. My daughter (year 9) is dabbling in it herself (themself?). I can only imagine it will peter out for most as it becomes more and more tiresome and they realise it makes no difference to their actual lives, except to send their teachers round the twist as they try to remember how to refer to everyone.

Multiple personalities are the latest fad, brace yourself.

Worth remembering that it's this brand of feminism that got Suzanne hounded out of the guardian.

Given that LP called me a clueless white feminist on Twitter this week, I rather enjoyed Suzanne Moore’s article. Certainly provided a laugh.

unwashedanddazed · 27/01/2022 17:21

She's so funny. Disappointing pussy! I've got one of those too! Grin

Delphinium20 · 27/01/2022 17:42

I adore Suzanne Moore and only found her because of MN. What I'd give for a U.S. feminist of her caliber and humor! I subscribe to Moore's sub stack - always a joy to read her!!!

"What did you do in the great pronoun war?" my grandchildren will ask me. "I largely could not be arsed." Grin

justaftb · 27/01/2022 18:14

A lot of "be kind" in some of the previous posts. Laurie Penny is happily selling women down the river to further her own career. The movement she is part of has hounded women out of their jobs and seen them go through gruelling legal battles. Who cares if people poke fun at her?

Scraggythang · 27/01/2022 18:17

Yeah. I liked it. I like mostly everything thing she writes. But then I’m a self-identified sanctimonious witch.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 27/01/2022 18:20

Quite Justaftb - you reap what you sew

They has happily put the boot into women who don’t agree with them over the years

Perhaps if they had been kinder then I’d have more sympathy but they weren’t so I don’t

dolorsit · 27/01/2022 18:24
@ScreamingMeMe because it targets an individual pretty damn relentlessly. I'm no fan of Laurie Penny and I like Suzanne Moore, and thanks to mumsnet and becoming a mother I'm now GC, but this article seems more like a character assassination than a critique of the principles
I have to admit I was expecting something more vitriolic but it's actually quite mild for Moore.

irishfeminist · 27/01/2022 18:26

Brilliant. LP is a proper nasty piece of work on Twitter so I wouldn't bother feeling sorry for her.

dolorsit · 27/01/2022 18:30

BTW on the misgendering issue.

A number of quotes of reviews used feminine pronouns, as did LP's Amazon author page. LP's wiki page noted the change of usage in the last year or so to they/them but that she/her was acceptable but LP felt she/her to be less accurate.

SwissBall · 27/01/2022 18:32

I enjoyed that Grin

I don’t understand why anyone else has to care if you’re non-binary.

Artichokeleaves · 27/01/2022 18:35

Shrewd and dry, and very much to the point. Well done Suzanne.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 27/01/2022 18:58

Laurie's advice to any mother with her young daughter, faced with a bloke with a semi on in a single sex nude spa area was to tell the daughter not to stare cause it's rude.

I couldn't care for whatever she writes or whatever she wants to call herself, if your position is tell women they shouldn't be rude to a potential sex offender you can get in the bin.

On the case in point, turned out it WAS a sex offender, yeah, great advice from Laurie there!

MsGoodenough · 27/01/2022 18:58

Great article. Thanks for sharing!

Clymene · 27/01/2022 19:02

If you're bisexual but married to a man as Penny is, then as far as the world is concerned, right now she's enjoying all the privilege of a bog standard heterosexual woman. Life's easier when you can identify in and out of oppression at will (and I say this as a bisexual woman).

Apart from anything else, Penny is one of the most irritating people on the planet. And if you think Moore's writing is insufferable, you should try reading penny's.
