Hugh Hefner. 'Shock' allegations

Why is anyone acting like this is a surprise. A rich, influential, old man lived surrounded by young, glamorous women for decades.

Only now are people seemingly shocked that these weren't wholesome relationships based on mutual respect.

Playboy 'strongly supports' women accusing Hugh Hefner www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-60132760

Surely this was abuse in plain site?

Beyond obvious.

KitchenDancefloor · 25/01/2022 23:57

And to think of all of the Playboy merchandise that was aimed at young women that they voluntarily bought and funded this pimp. Yuck.

I remember being called a prude by a colleague in the early 2000s because I questioned why Playboy logos had become mainstream. I think at that point you could get branded duvet sets in Argos.

The abuse was so obvious to anyone who could see beyond the celebrity status of that creep. Hiding in plain sight.

I remember Playboy branded stationery sets in Smiths - aimed at back to schoolers so definitely minors.

WTF.

KitchenDancefloor · 26/01/2022 00:09

And in so many celebrity interviews, people have giggled about being invited to 'the mansion' as if it were a great honour. I wonder how much social media cleansing is happening right now.

Gosh, what a 'shock'

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 26/01/2022 00:38

I am trying really hard to put on my Shocked Face.

fallfallfall · 26/01/2022 00:50

sex and drugs were the 70's, and many a young women followed the money his or via nude modeling.
totally not shocked i really don't know how or why anyone would be surprised.

3amMusings · 26/01/2022 01:01

Hmmm. It's funny how Playboy are supporting these women now when Hugh Hefner is no longer here to fight them on it. Makes it nice and easy for them I guess.

CanIPleaseHaveOne · 26/01/2022 01:39

The level of abuse is terrible. He controlled them by shame, filming them and using it against them.
Like others I am not shocked but am quite surprised at how similar the MO of all these guys is.

MiladyBerserko · 26/01/2022 05:34

Gosh!

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 26/01/2022 05:48

I just googled 'Hugh Hefner Donald Trump' - quite the predictable rabbit hole.

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/01/2022 06:04

Just read the article. I’m not shocked at all. I hadn’t though of the organisation behind it such as ‘pig nights’. 🤢 Having looked up quaaludes, the drug mentioned in the article, it’s another form of date rape drug. 15 mins of sleepiness followed by intense euphoria and an altered state of mind. According to the article, Bill Crosby and Roman Polanski used it on women. The substance was abused a lot and was banned in the US in 1984. I presume in the U.K. also.

There were a lot of women who bought into the PR - thinking of Kathryn Flett as one example. I wonder what they were thinking. Tbh the whole magazine trade is so vile even when not directly about exploitation and abuse, it may be difficult to locate an appropriate moment to get out your moral compass. But there is a difference between sleazy puff pieces about Z-listers tp flog cosmetic surgery clinics and drugging models for rape.

Harlequin1088 · 26/01/2022 06:34

I’ve literally just read this and laughed my eye out. As if it comes as any surprise that a man who built an entire empire on the objectification and exploitation of women is a sexual predator!

Vanishun · 26/01/2022 06:34

Shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that the total creepy piece of shit sleazeball who made a fortune out of objectifying women could possibly be accused of such things.

Yes! I remember this now! I’m in my mid-30’s and I remember Playboy stationary being all the rage with the cool girls at school. My Mum never allowed me to have any though - not because of some moral standpoint, mind you, but because it was “too expensive” 😂

I don’t remember what case it was, but I also recall around the same time a pre-teen girl died and images of her funeral and the mourners lining the streets was on the news. When they zoomed in on the hearse as it passed by, I noticed that this little girl’s coffin was bright pink and emblazoned with the Playboy bunny logo. I was only a teen myself but I remember thinking what poor taste that was in. Even if that girl’s parents had bought her every item of Playboy stationery known to man, surely they’d have drawn the line at burying their daughter in a Playboy bunny coffin?? That image has always stayed with me.

elgreco · 26/01/2022 09:56

It was so fucking obvious, SO OBVIOUS! How are people so stupid?
