An interesting article highlighting the issues cardiff city faces with extreme trans activists. Interesting as it is just down the road from Newport where the disabledady who was stickering was arrested. It is ridiculous because the actual hate and violent threats from TRAs just get ignored.

These young adults are truly awful. So entitled and they think they are morally supreme.. yet they are in fact little fascists.

Universities are clearly the breeding ground for this hatred, it seems like they need to take responsibility.

How does this behaviour not fall into the definition of extremism, according to the 2011 Prevent strategy?

Definition: vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

I live in Cardiff and 90% of the trans people I see in the city centre look to be of student age. They see themselves as the good guys, fighting injustice and bigotry.

I often wonder how they’d react if they knew my 12 year old finds the stickers with guns and ‘fuck TERFs’ genuinely threatening and unappealing, despite the rainbows and anime figures. It’s a disturbing mix of violence and immaturity.

My views on gender/trans are possibly somewhat ‘softer’ than the average mumsnetter’s and I’ve made a point of explaining both sides of the argument to my child. So I feel angry that these stickers have given my child the impression that whenever we have a conversation about this in public (usually sparked off by stickers/graffiti of this kind, or the odd GC sticker), some random TRA is going to attack me for being a TERF if I say anything that might be perceived as gender critical.

Interestingly my child never seems worried that I’m going to be overheard and beaten up by a gender critical woman when I discuss the trans rights argument.

Bland There are plenty of examples of people who think they are being moderate, seeing both sides and being cancelled by people who just can't understand nuanced arguments. Only complete aquiesence will do in TRA world. Most of us started out with 'softer' views. Experience has hardened them.

I totally agree with you.

I was at a different university not far away when I first heard that Cardiff Uni had "no-platformed" Germaine Greer some years ago. That was the first I heard of anything going on.

Athenajm80 · 24/01/2022 22:01

This is disgusting. I live in Cardiff and a few years back saw some graffiti saying fuck terfs or something like that. I was just learning about all this stuff so thought the use of "TERF" was referring to something else, mainly cause the kids who graffiti round here don't seem the most... interested in anything other than crime and getting high. Obviously I was wrong.
I will still happily walk round with my suffragette and feminist badges, I almost challenge someone to start something.
My only concern is that I work in the public sector and wouldn't want it to affect my job, but I'm not going to hide what I believe to appease some band wagon jumping students.

This is so sad. I imagine these were mostly put up in Cathays (student area) or the city centre.

The gun imagery is typical, isn't? It's misogyny - 'shut the fuck up woman' is the message, and be submissive to whatever our demands are or we'll hurt or kill you.

Someone should put a blank label with the word 'woman' or 'feminist' on some of those stickers, over the bit where it says TERF. I don't want to distress women but I do want people to see what a lot of these activities really want.

I cannot believe that so many people say that it's bad on both sides - no. The gun imagery is typical TRA and I would say they've got it from American TRAs.

This doesn't bode well for FILIA this year.

Igmum · 26/01/2022 10:19

Great article thanks for sharing OP. The TRA combination of violence and victim never fails to baffle me. Can these people not see the contradictions in their own arguments? Why aren't there any internal criticisms? We point it out all the time - it is glaringly obvious.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 26/01/2022 10:44

@TinselAngel

This doesn't bode well for FILIA this year.
It was annoying enough in Portsmouth with protesters drowning out talks by sexual abuse survivors, and those misogynist perverts chalking their obscene graffiti on the pavement where we held the vigil for murdered women. (And if anyone objects to my phrasing, the people responsible for the sexual threats and dick pics were both misogynist and perverted IMO. You’re welcome to tell me why you think otherwise).

But that didn’t stop it being a bloody good conference. And FiLiA are at least forewarned.

BeyondShrinks · 26/01/2022 11:20

I know someone who is doing their phd/teaches at Cardiff uni. They have been specifically warned that GC women are hounded, and to hide their views.
