Another famous couple used a surrogate, put it down to God's grace

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra this time.

No thanks to the women whose body they used.

"Speaking to Vanity Fair for its February 2022 issue, she said: "They're a big part of our desire for the future.

"By God's grace, when it happens, it happens." "

As the mum of a 26 weeker this makes me so sad. Who is doing skin to skin with this baby? Is it the birth mother? This is absolutely critical for a baby of this gestation

And the fact that the entire process of surogacy means hugely increases the risks to the health of the baby and the mother.

But according to one poster, it is all ok because the mother will make a mint of the deal.

MrsJamin · 24/01/2022 22:18

It's all so dehumanising of the woman who had that baby alive within her for 27 weeks and gave birth to the baby, risking her life. If she is dehumanised for being a mother, in a way any of us who are mothers are dehumanised. I find it sickening.

NotBadConsidering · 24/01/2022 22:31

I’ve been watching the developing situation with Ukraine and Russia, wondering how long until we see pictures of abandoned babies from surrogacy arrangements, and how long until a rich Western couple posts their sob story about how Putin stopped them from buying a baby on the cheap Hmm.

TEN THOUSAND, @FannyCann?

Jesus.

FannyCann · 25/01/2022 21:00

Ooh dear. @vivariumvivariumsvivaria
I can't substantiate that and I can't remember where I thought I'd read it but now I'm googling and think the number is around 3,000 which is still a lot, though there aren't any official numbers.

I think I'll report my post and delete.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/01/2022 21:44

Ok, well, let's do that again.

THREE THOUSAND?

Jesus.

That is a lot of babies who don't have a clear person who will not hesitate to drop everything and run as fast as they can to them.

That is very, very scary.

Clymene · 25/01/2022 21:50

I read this at the time but this article is absolutely bloody horrifying. Anyone who thinks surrogacy is a good thing should read it

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/15/the-stranded-babies-of-kyiv-and-the-women-who-give-birth-for-money

FannyCann · 25/01/2022 22:08

Yes. Three thousand babies.
If there is war I predict an explosion of people trafficking, pregnant women being shifted across borders to give birth and unclaimed babies being sold on.

The horrors of the babies unclaimed as a result of coronavirus are nothing to what may come yet.

FannyCann · 25/01/2022 22:16

Latest from Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel.
There are likely already babies whose collection has been put on hold.

FannyCann · 25/01/2022 23:08

3000 a year is 57 a week.
If people are advised not to travel there must already be babies awaiting collection.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/01/2022 23:15

It's not often I'm speechless, but I am. I think it might acceptable to use the MN trope here...will nobody think of the children?

Are they even Ukranian citizens? If their parents are in the UK or US then does the Embassy have a role?

Again, I find myself only able to think "Jesus".

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 26/01/2022 07:45

When covid restrictions started the news showed rows of cribs with babies who hadn't been collected
Babies whose brains have already suffered trauma from being removed from the birth mother and who were not getting the love and touch they need to develop healthily

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 26/01/2022 13:33

Is it possible to find a different reaction to this other than "Jesus"?

Those poor little sods. What a shitty hand life has dealt them.

This message was in a newsletter I receive from CBC.

Message From A NICU Nurse

This past week, we received the following message from a woman who has spent her career as a NICU nurse. She has spent years personally observing the situations we routinely warn about. We think her message is worthy of consideration:

"I have been a NICU nurse for 13 years. I heard about your organization after listening to Jennifer Lahl on Allie Beth Stuckey’s podcast.t. I immediately went and watched #BigFertilityty on YouTube. The story was heartbreaking. As a NICU nurse I see the effects of this exploitation first hand. We have an OB/GYN that cares for surrogate moms all the time. The intended parents are typically from China. After the baby is delivered, the contracted agency picks up the baby (hardly ever the parents) and cares for them for about three months. They are waiting for a social security number and a passport for the baby. Then they fly the baby to China to the parents. The whole thing is always so weird and never sits well with me."

It's worth asking why so many of these babies are in the NICU to begin with. Could it be because surrogate pregnancies are so high risk and likely to result in premature delivery? And what might be the long term implications on the babies and their ability to form healthy attachments after being stripped from their birth mothers and left in limbo for months on end? These are the types of questions that continue to fuel our work at the CBC. Thanks for standing with us in the fight for our shared human future.

Babies routinely left in NICU then handed over to the care of a nanny contracted by the surrogacy agency until such time as they can be exported to the people who ordered them.

It's incredible to me - a total lack of oversight from children's services for instance. What a start in life for these poor babies. And anyone who remembers the Romanian orphanage scandal understands how lack of live and stimulation for babies in their early months damages their neurological development forever.

FannyCann · 26/01/2022 16:58

Sorry "" failure.
The latest two paragraphs are my comment on the message.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 26/01/2022 20:21

I do remember the Romanian Orphanages, I was just a young teenager when that was all over the news.

I had a colleague in Manchester, a healthcare professional, high band, team lead - and very hard work. I often wondered if she had a mental health diagnosis, her behaviour was, well, challenging. Lots of fun, exuberance and also patient complaints, staff complaints of bullying, big highs and crashing lows.

Penny dropped when she shared one lunchtime that she was 3 when she was adopted from an orphanage. It did not sound like it was an easy childhood for her or her parents.

The 4th trimester is important.

So, yes, again, Jesus.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 26/01/2022 20:22

Thanks for the links, I'll have a look.

Not a Sex and Gender discussion. It's mostly gossip about a named couple. And this post states there's another thread on this elsewhere.
