The thought in my head is "No shit" ie. 'We need a level playing field for womens sports'

The advantage Lia has is IN YOUR FACE

There is a very good South Park parody episode for 4? Years ago.

Trans rights are NOT womens rights

Can it get anymore obvious than Lia Thomas' physique and previous experience in male competitive swimming

Also South Park is the Frasier of smart tv writing you just need to give in to it to appreciate the cleverness

I did hear that the crowd ignore Thomas when they finish and clap like mad for second place!

If this is true I think that would be the best collective crowd demonstration ever! 😊

Imagine 'winning' and getting no reaction

Meanwhile, USA swimming are legalising cheating…

South Park is brilliant, and prescient, on so many current issues.

I've just been reading this one too...
Can't understand why a FTM transgender person would want to delay taking hormones to remain on the womens swim team if they believed themselves to be a man. Surely the mens team would be more appropriate for them?

It seems clear that moves are afoot to make the women's category in sports a catch all open category when it should be the men's. The root of it is pure misogyny and a complete disdain for anything that matters to women.

Part of it is about pandering to the demands of men who must always be given what they want but I also suspect part of it is sacrificing women to keep the sanctity and optics of men's sport in tact. The don't want the visuals of Thomas (or others) in a bathing suit in the men's competition so if they can make it the problem of women then it's a win for all men involved - everybody gets what they want except women but we don't matter.

I'm fairly sure they also don't want the hassle of trying to accommodate females in the male team either. None of them would make the cut of course but if enough fuss was made they might feel forced for the purpose of inclusion optics to ring fence spaces for FTMs which would exclude a man from a place on the team (this must only be allowed to happen to women).

So which ever way you look at it, it's a huge benefit to men to destroy female sport by forcing it to become the broadest open category possible and call it 'inclusive'.

Michael Phelps says the controversy surrounding NCAA swimmer Lia Thomas is “very complicated.”

No it is very simple

You either support sex segregated sport or you do not

NC as I'm afraid of being outed. Long time lurker, occasional poster on other boards.

OvaHere, I just want to say, as a man, that having the women's category debased in this manner is of no benefit to me.

Removing an arena in which women can compete fairly is a detriment to them AND me, as the spectacle of even competition involving women is deleted from our societal fabric. I'm not so blind or callous as to not care about my wife, daughter or mother. Let alone the other 51% of the population who all matter, to a woman.

This corruption of women's sport: Not in my name. And I'll happily say that face to face to anyone I know.

(Also: great user handle. Love it!)

I was using men in the collective/class politics meaning. I realise on an individual level many men will recognise what is happening to female sport and find it abhorrent. My own husband and son feel the same way you do.

It doesn't even have to be a huge proportion of men invested in protecting and ring fencing men's sports for women to be rendered powerless.

It's great that there are men concerned enough to lurk and read here but don't extrapolate us using men/males down to an individual level. It's too convoluted for women to debate freely on a Feminist board if we have to make not all men are like this caveats constantly. So please take it as given that we know NAMALT. Smile

OvaHere...

Firstly: sorry for inadvertently making the conversation about me.

What I really wanted to do was express my reaction to let you know that there are plenty of men on your side when it comes to sports, prisons, awards and single sex spaces. I totally understand you are using the label men as a political class definition, but from my PoV it feels like a subset of a subset who are so callous as to be willing to betray their humanist obligations to your sex class, rather than something supported by the majority of us.

Even those men I know who don't speak for fear of repercussions, express in private conversation that elements of this situation are a toxic farce.

I think that bears remembering. That even outside of those who are naturally concerned with feminist issues, you are broadly holding the mainstream view.

ANameChangePresents · 21/01/2022 13:09

TLDR; not many men agree with this debasement of sport. Sadly, a few influential ones either do agree with it or are too weak to express disagreement, even if it is a moral duty in their role.

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 21/01/2022 18:04

I think a crowd/ spectator reaction would be huge and impossible to ignore when tv coverage/ commentary happens

DO NOT CHEER these false winners
CHEER THE WOMEN we know which are which

I would love to make it a movement but not my repartee

Seems to be a modern problem of not wanting to speak out using common sense for the fairness to women for fear of being transphobic

Mens competition will be seen as the best of the best

And "women" are whatever's left

I agree that you either have sex segrated sport or not.
