Looking at the next GE and wondering if I spoil my paper again or hope these guys are fielding a candidate here.

Would you ind reading their policy on sex/gender stuff and letting me know what you think? I tend to miss the weaselly bits of political proposals/statements, and all that sort of thing, until they're pointed out to me.

Thank you.
(I am a very non-active member, I joined SDP when they recently revived really in memory of my dad, who had joined them way back when because there was going to be a bun fight and he thought it would be fun.)

I am working my way through all their policies, but stopped at abolishing the HOL. We really need the HOL. Some members are doing a great job protecting the rights of women and safeguarding of children, when so many political parties are breaking them down.

Jux · 17/01/2022 14:28

I do agree with you there. HoL is a bit like an older sister who listens to you and then says "yes, but have you thought about ....."

Yes. Look thee to Scotland, where we have no 2nd chamber, and despair.

sleepymum50 · 17/01/2022 14:34

Hi, what does HOL stand for?

endofthelinefinally · 17/01/2022 14:39

House of Lords

Rightsraptor · 17/01/2022 14:45

I too was flirting with the idea of voting SDP but can't now I know they want to abolish the Lords. I would never have thought I'd be rooting for the HoL. But I never thought either we'd be fighting for our rights as we are.

endofthelinefinally · 17/01/2022 14:56

I know that there are a few awful people in the HOL, but there are some utterly brilliant people too. I just worry about what will happen in future as some of the best and brightest are in their 80s.

endofthelinefinally · 17/01/2022 14:57

I would support reviewing the criteria for appointing members.

Floisme · 17/01/2022 15:15

From what I've seen I would vote for them despite any reservations, because I wish to register my support for a left-of-centre party that recognises biological sex and women's rights, and that is open to rational debate.

endofthelinefinally · 17/01/2022 15:21

Their party secretary is a former member of UKIP.

Same here.
damibasiamille · 17/01/2022 15:32

Yes, what a dilemma! The women's rights bit sounds just right to me, but it was only the Lords that stopped that Ministerial Maternity Bill going through without a single feminine pronoun (except "Her Majesty"!) and without the words "woman" or "mother" !

Jux · 17/01/2022 17:04

So interestingly, we the people want to hang onto the Lords! I wonder if I can send them a link to this thread. I'll have a look around there.

damibasiamille, i'm not missing anything in the rights bit, am I? It does sound sensible and fair.

Shame about the Lords though, when I first looked at their policies they weren't anything like so fleshed out,, unsurprisingly. I think though that, without women, Lords will be just as fucked as the rest of us.

Must confess that I thought the SDP had ceased to exist.

Sorry, but who is going to waste a vote on a party with no hope of getting elected?

Igmum · 17/01/2022 17:23

I might vote for them. Hated spoiling my ballot last time - I've always been firmly in the people died for you to have the vote camp but I cannot bear to see Labour and the LibDems sacrificing women and children on the altar of insanity. This looks like sane policies on both trans and women's rights. Yes I want to keep the Lords but frankly, given the state of British politics, I'd be voting for this lot first and asking to keep the Lords later

Jux · 17/01/2022 18:15

HeatonGrove half the time the party I vote for doesn't have a hope of getting elected. I've not voted Tory since I was 18.

OP posts:
Jux · 17/01/2022 18:17

In fact, I've just remembered I didn't vote Tory back then either. There I was, thinking I was a True Bluer at that tender age and I actually wasn't. I voted Monster Raving Loony.

Wouldn’t vote for them if you care about single mothers (or single dads, or just unmarried parents for that matter). Read their page on family policies:

Married families will be given preference in council house and social housing allocation, which will be increased. meanwhile vulnerable/young/impart emerged mothers will be put in “accommodation”. Would like to see who matches that definition.

Also weird stuff about parents working from home and redundancy protections that I think would just lead to more discrimination against hiring women in the workplace.

See also weird part about teaching Britain’s ‘net positive’ contributions to world history Confused

Lots of very Hmm bits dotted about that make me think their trans policy isn’t coming from a pro women and feminist perspective.

user1471504747 · 17/01/2022 18:26

Impart was meant to be unpartenered.

Jux · 17/01/2022 23:52

User, yes that does imply they're coming from an authoritarian position doesn't it, and doesn't bode too well.

Looks increasingly likely that my ballot will be spoiled. Damn that Starmer guy. If he only had a bit of courage the Labour Party could have become vote--worthy by now.

Derision; that's my latest idea for fighting gender idology ... but I think laughter with a bit of affectionate "you twit" patronage thrown in would work better. "You think you can change sex? Oh bless"
