What has Stewart Lee done?

I see lots of people on Twitter are slagging off Stewart Lee because he listed a lot of non-woke folk like Graham Linehan in his "pedal bin" of people he doesn't like. What is his public stance on the Trans Rights campaign though? I've not heard/read anything but I've probably missed it.

Is he well? How utterly self indulgent his lists are 🙄

I saw him a few years ago at a small theatre off Leicester Square. He was OK, but there was one interminable repetitive sequence about shitting on a flag. I think it was aimed at racists or patriots (or anyone that wasn't him) but I dozed off......

I don't care where people went to school or how much money they have really. It's the whining about childcare costs when you're pulling in £2m/year and the constant wearying dividing the world into people who are goodies and baddies.

I think I was at that one. Yes I fell asleep too. He just rambles, thinking that he is very cleverly working up to a ‘hilarious’ punchline. Grandpa with a sex helmet or something? My brother in one of his Facebook conspiracy theory rants is funnier.

I really wish that " Stewart lee the comedian" would do a show about how wealthy " Stewart lee the person" really is. He never mentions his massive house or the profits his limited company makes. It's very very odd.

I love Stewart Lee, can't wait to see him live. I wonder if he does a routine on this. I think if anyone could personify the tortured state of this discussion, he could. His performing persona is really interesting imo, and it is a persona.

If he's 100% twaw I don't agree with him. Do I have to? Why?

Stewart Lee makes me cry with laughter, he's brilliant at taking the piss out of himself. But sadly his misogyny is showing.

I still have a tiny glimmer of hope that he will realise he's wrong about this, but for someone so bright he's certainly taking a long, long time.

I saw him once years ago. He was tedious and unfunny. I thought Lee was very good at attempting to "take the piss" out of everyone else apart from Lee.

Lee himself was, in Lee's opinion, a very important and serious person saying very important and serious things.

Looking at the list, that pedal bin needs to be quite a good size: whole audiences are going to be clamouring to be let in :)

Not all the women are in red - for instance: Lisa Nandy, Leila Kötting (who should be Leila McMillan), Hannah Gadsby, Dambisa Moyo.

I've seen Stewart Lee live so I'll save you the bother if you haven't:

He plays a character of a miserable tedious misunderstood comedian who looks down on his fans. And his fans lap it up and say he's a genius for doing it. His fans argue that if you don't like it, or if you feel bullied by it, you simply haven't understood the complexity of the comedy. Or you can be safely dismissed as a Tory and/or a racist. I don't think he realises how many people on the left see through him.

It's total crap. Isn't it interesting how it's only rich white men who get away with this "inhabiting a persona" shite? Imagine reporting harassment to the police and them telling you to get over it because your harasser was just joking and playing a character. But this is what he's doing, he's harassing people (including people barely in the public eye at all, who he has never interacted with), not just with his lists, but by obsessively criticising them on a personal level in his live shows, turning his rabid fans onto them, and publicly declaring them to be non-U.

He's a nasty person. "It's only a joke" isn't good enough when real people get hurt.

I think Stewart Lee plays a useful function in society. If a man is a Lee fan, be wary of him.

Is he playing a character? One gig they were fixing a dvd of his tv show. I thought they’d give it to you but no, you had to queue like school dinners and he would ask your name and autograph the CS. Hell, I’d paid for it but could see that he had about as much grace in the endeavour as I felt. By the time I’d got to the front I was more pissed off than he was. He seemed to get more huffy that I wasn’t fangirling him. It’s still in the plastic bag.

Sorry to deflect but I have a theory about the names in red. Could it be a result of Track Changes? ie he wrote the original list in Word, handed it to someone else to look over, and that person added some extra names using Track Changes, which would show up in red. And then he copied and pasted the whole list into his newsletter.

I'm a big fan of Stewart Lee and agog at the immaturity of this. For someone who's made a career as a high brow 'comedian's comedian' it's just embarrassing playground stuff.

Arguably if Glinner hadn't drawn attention to it I wouldn't have known it was there, but fair enough he felt the need to respond.

What was high brow about making stupid racist jokes about Ang Lee when he was interviewed about directing The Hulk?

Sad to see that a relatively unknown comedian I follow, who did nothing but have the gall to criticise Lee on Twitter months ago, got named on ‘the list’ and has had to delete his account due to being sent nasty abuse.

I actually find Lee funny. I like how he deconstructs the process of comedy and he’s never predictable. He’s clearly a very smart guy, which is why it’s so weird to see him basically creating a burn book online. He knows full well what happens when people with large followings basically come out and say ‘I don’t like person X’ without further explanation. His rabid followers will fill in the gaps and decide they’re the enemy.

I worked with him in his pre-tv days. He could be nice, not necessarily sincerely so. Big big ego and quite self-absorbed though, but so were all stand-ups so some extent. Not so much a misogynist back then, but not a 'new man' either iyswim. I thought him quite intelligent, and mostly clear-sighted. I hope his list is just a way to get some publicity, but nor would I be surprised if he'd blossomed into a complete twat.
