What has Stewart Lee done?

I see lots of people on Twitter are slagging off Stewart Lee because he listed a lot of non-woke folk like Graham Linehan in his "pedal bin" of people he doesn't like. What is his public stance on the Trans Rights campaign though? I've not heard/read anything but I've probably missed it.

Thick as mince?

Not as thick as people like SL who drink the FoolAid.

I long for the day when the tide changes.

@PenguindreamsofDraco I work in adjacent circles and have had the displeasure of him in person. Never warmed to him even years ago as a junior. Arrogant is the word.

In referring to the misogyny element I am merely quoting a friend who has had closer professional dealings with him on a peer level and was reporting back on variety of her female peers’ experiences. Trying not to out anyone here Grin

Oh I think citing a negative experience with JM is about as outing as the mystery hobby being cycling Grin

Random sections are red, which I wrongly thought were hyperlinks at first. It reminded me of that time cube guy's website.

I wondered if the names in red were late additions - like Maureen Lipman speaking about cancel culture in December (unless she’d done something else to bring down the Wrath of the Righteous One upon her?).

Almost all the names in red are women.

anotherchocolate · 04/01/2022 14:40

He was the captain (of course) of a Christmas Special University Challenge team last week and he had my 17 year old dd raging at the television because he put "Jeremy" at the end of every sentence as in "Oh we don't know this, Jeremy" said with a little chuckle

Yes! It was enraging. Such a sickening little sycophant, so toadying. Yeurgh.

I quite liked Christie when she first came on the scene but now she's a disappointment. Heavily TWAW. And since discovering that Lee went to private school, I cannot fathom the energy to care for his miserable, immature witterings. More champagne socialists.

IvyTwines · 04/01/2022 14:48

And he came on dressed as a trans flag (fox-killer, not Lee).

RoyalCorgi · 04/01/2022 14:51

I'm going to stand up for champagne socialists here. After all, what is the saintly JKR if not a champagne socialist? I don't object to people with left-wing principles earning a lot of money providing they don't earn it off the backs of sweat shop workers.

Both Lee and Christie tend to do their standup in small venues with reasonably low ticket costs of about £20. Lee won a scholarship to private school. That's hardly his fault. It's not as if he went to Eton - and even if he did, so what? Orwell went to Eton and produced some of the finest writings about how capitalism affects working-class people that we have ever had.

But Stewart, if you're reading: I still think you're a c*.

According to Twitter this would indicate the names were from a Twitter block list created by a paedophile app(?) or an app created by a paedophile(?).
SolasAnla · 04/01/2022 14:57
  • paedophile app(?) Sorry NB that reads wrong. I am not suggesting that the people listed are involved in CSA but that they have spoken against CSA.
KittenKong · 04/01/2022 15:19

Shock bloody hell - it gets worse.

@WalkOnGildedSplinters

I wonder if Nimco Ali is also because she is good friends with Carrie Johnson? She is supposed to have gone and visited/stayed with Carrie during the winter lockdown I think.
I've had a look at the list now, and her name is just before Carrie's.

So I think that's it. To Lee, it apparently doesn't matter what else she's survived, and what positive impact she's made on the world, she's friends with Carrie. So bin it is.

I imagine that Lee would say, "but she is friends with conservatives/is a conservative" or whatever.

To which, I say, so bloody what. In general, the world is better when we do not descend into political tribalism, and instead, we work together on the objectives we share.

More importantly though, and also far more specifically, if Stewart Lee had ever stepped beyond party lines to find out about Nimco Ali and what she does, before throwing her in the bin, he would know that the left let her down first. Nimco Ali is a survivor of FGM and a campaigner to abolish the custom, and she has written and spoken frequently about leftwing politicians who characterise her efforts to eliminate FGM as racist! And who say that she is exaggerating the impact of FGM on girls. Angry

Thanks for the link to the Kent Online article. There seems to be some kind of law that Stewart Lee fans think if you don’t like him you don’t understand him and must love Michael McIntyre.

Phrenologistsfinger · 04/01/2022 15:33

@PenguindreamsofDraco you are so right! Grin

NotDavidTennant · 04/01/2022 15:35

I don't really get what all the fuss is about. He made a list of people he likes and dislikes in the style of those fashion magazine "what's in and out" listings and put it on his website.

It's juvenile for sure but is it really something to get outraged about?

I agree with this. We slag off BJ and his cronies for their Eton / Oxford background and Bullingdon Club membership. But surely if someone has come from that background but can empathise with people from less privileged and go into professions that can make a difference (including politics), that's a good thing? They could have chosen not to care, and they weren't responsible for their upbringing.

I don't dislike SL because he went to private school and Oxbridge, I dislike him because he thinks he's sneery and thinks he is so much cleverer than the rest of us, and that's how he makes his money now sadly.

Having a look again, you're absolutely right. All the names entirely in red are women. Men are in black (except Graham Linehan, whose last name is red).

It just shows which "side" he's chosen and people (including me) are sad at his choice. Much as I don't like his comedy I am disappointed in his choices here.

I guess I just don't get why people care what he thinks. I especially don't get why people who apparently never liked him, think he is really unfunny and an arrogant snob (and also did they mention that he's really unfunny) care what he thinks.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 04/01/2022 16:16

I'm a fan anyway, but it is more disappointing when clever, educated people don't get it.

Stewart Lee makes me cry with laughter, he's brilliant at taking the piss out of himself. But sadly his misogyny is showing.

I still have a tiny glimmer of hope that he will realise he's wrong about this, but for someone so bright he's certainly taking a long, long time.

Gumbomambo · 04/01/2022 16:19

I think it upsets people that he’s a well known comic with a large presence and has chosen to put a list like this out into the public sphere. It’s pretty shit. I used to love him many years ago but I suppose I had to grow up and live in the real world and it doesn’t seem he had to. Anyone making rape jokes is an absolute areshole.

Gumbomambo · 04/01/2022 16:20

Arsehole obviously.

Franca123 · 04/01/2022 16:21

Stewart Lee has always been unbearable. Smug doesn't even come close. The list is really embarrassing. Isn't he about 50? It's something school children do. I always felt he had an unpleasant edge to go along with the condescension. It seems I was right. I saw his mate Richard Herring once and walked out after about 15mins. Couldn't stand the clever clever I'm so much better than everyone let me tell you what I think while you sit there and listen. Made want to have a shower to wash I off.

RoyalCorgi · 04/01/2022 16:23

Has anyone worked out why the women are in red? I assume it's accidental rather than to make a point. Did he copy and paste the women from elsewhere?
