What has Stewart Lee done?

I see lots of people on Twitter are slagging off Stewart Lee because he listed a lot of non-woke folk like Graham Linehan in his "pedal bin" of people he doesn't like. What is his public stance on the Trans Rights campaign though? I've not heard/read anything but I've probably missed it.

Its a middle class ideology, they are firmly middle class themselves.

This.

vera99 · 05/09/2022 18:15

He's very OCD and the temper might be a spectrum thing and notorious to work with. TBH whilst he is amazingly poetic I find him a bit too narcissistic and misanthropic for my tastes. A bit of a cult around him though as he has eschewed TV since Phoenix Nights where he and Peter Kay were mortal enemies apparently.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/09/2022 18:19

I used to like him, but he's disappeared too far up his own arse now.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/09/2022 18:20

SL not Kitson.

vera99 · 05/09/2022 18:36

I flip-flop over SL watched Snowflake on iplayer last night and found it very good and laughed a lot if somewhat mildy disgusted at self-congratulatory at how wonderful he all is amongst his doting coterie. He constructs the arc of his show and his famous callbacks very artfully and with consummate skill (sounding like an arty ponce myself.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 06/09/2022 03:07

Glinner was nearly i tears and accusing SL of not being right about trans stuff tonight.

i am confused about what is going on, but it all seems a bit tense

GlorianaCervixia · 06/09/2022 04:32

Graham's lost his career and his reputation over supporting women's rights. Not surprising he'd be disgusted to see Lee won't even support Jerry Sadowitz, purely because he's gone out of fashion with the kind of people who go to see Stewart Lee shows. It really shows Lee's cowardice.

SpinCityBlues · 06/09/2022 06:30

Glinner sees the cowardice at the comedy-face, and how this middle class ideology has effectively made comedy pointless.

He has brought his whole self to the fray. And god love him for that.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 06/09/2022 07:34

There's a certain group of people who want to control content, and control who gets to perform, even if they have no intention of ever going to see the show themselves.

Lee won't even support Jerry Sadowitz, purely because he's gone out of fashion with the kind of people who go to see Stewart Lee shows.

Yes, I don't think Lee wants to offend his audience. But I don't think his opinions are that far away from his audiences, either.

vera99 · 06/09/2022 07:34

I should have read the OP and have just watched this Graham Linehan is a genius and the pile on him is beyond bad. Starting to see Lee through different eyes now.

I saw that. Glinner was so angry with Lee. And rightly so. I wish Graham could just go to some tropical island where nobody has ever heard of Willoughby , Lee or the Izzard of Was. Do him the world of good.

But these ' comedians' - aren't ya sick of them? I'm not their fucking analyst. Rather watch Tim Vine. Or an episode of Fr.Ted.

KittenKong · 06/09/2022 08:45

Smug and superior. I ‘met’ him at a ‘cd signing’ after a gig. The cd was part if the ticket but you had to queue up for an audience with SL to collect it. He looked like he really couldn’t be arsed (so why do it??) and definitely had superiority vibes.

he thinks he is so much smarter than everyone else in the room. Like an adult explaining electricity to a toddler.

crossstitchingnana · 06/09/2022 08:51

It's clear that a lot of you don't get SL and a lot of the quotes from shows are taken out of context.

His stage persona is a character, one who nails his colours to the left-wing, woke flag pole. I haven't seen this list so can't comment on that.

RoyalCorgi · 06/09/2022 08:55

His stage persona is a character, one who nails his colours to the left-wing, woke flag pole.

It is. So let's judge him by what he says and does in real life. It turns out that in real life, he has also nailed his colours to the woke flagpole and is too much of a coward to stand up for JK Rowling or any other victims of this vicious persecution.

KittenKong · 06/09/2022 08:59

Didn’t he also name check mumsnet? And in the lazy ‘ooo nasty right wing mommie pearl clutchers’?

ThickCutSteakChips · 06/09/2022 09:27

Stewart Lee is absolutely cut from the same cloth as Billy 'but I campaigned for abortion rights and against DV, what more do you bitches want' Bragg.

They will claim to be 'feminists', will make jokes about overt misogynists, and make all the right noises.

But when it comes to down to it, men always come first.

vera99 · 06/09/2022 09:29

Oh, and watching him on Snowflake the other night he has really let himself go.

ThickCutSteakChips · 06/09/2022 09:38

vera99 · 06/09/2022 09:29

Oh, and watching him on Snowflake the other night he has really let himself go.

I couldn't work out if his whole look with that jacket and everything was supposed to be taking the piss out of offensive 1970s comdedians, a play on the 'let himself go' thing, or if he really has let himself go!

Maybe he really is just too clever for me!

vera99 · 06/09/2022 09:56

He's piled on the pounds (haven't we all - well I have a few kilos too much) and since he is some middle-class quinoa, feta cheese quiche aware type of guy he should know all too well what that presages. I think his opening remarks were to address the literal elephant in the room - himself!

FalloverBoy · 06/09/2022 09:57

I feel for Graham I really do. He's out there furiously pointing at the Emperor and getting flack for it. I fear for Stewart Lee's health and well-being after watching his show the other night. If they do get together in private, I hope they have the paramedics on standby. I don't know where all this shit is going. I just want to teleport to the future and look back and see how it all sorted itself out.

I'm sure it won't be solved on the frontier of comedy but comedy does hold a mirror up to society. I just know that some people are holding back their thoughts because they know those thoughts, if expressed, will damage them. In comedy. In real-life. And that's not healthy.

vera99 · 06/09/2022 10:04

His Gervais speaking the unspeakable had me laughing for a while and then uncomfortable because it almost mimicked a disabled mute person trying to express themselves. Well, it did in my mind maybe that was the point... he seems to punching all over the place these days rather than just up.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/09/2022 10:27

Poor old Stew.

Agreed. I have always liked him with his cheeky boy grin and sparkling eyes. Much of what he says goes over my head and i dont get all this woke stuff. But i've seen him live a few times and always enjoy his gigs

TheKeatingFive · 06/09/2022 12:11

I don't know anything about the Graham Linehan situation, but did he say anything actually problematic or is he a 'transphobe' in the way that JKR is a 'transphobe'? 🙄

I genuinely think people who say they like SL need to work on their self esteem

he doesn’t make you laugh because he’s not funny, not because he’s oh so much smarter than you
