On testosterone. Anyone heard it?

Presenter Naomi Alderman finished by saying that ‘we aren’t sure what the exact effect of testosterone is’ despite it being clearly explained by the scientist interviewed during the course of the programme.

One of the premises of the programme was that in addition to the changes to the body, testosterone operates on the brain to create a "masculine gender identity" and as I understood it, they were trying to be "scientific" and so the comment about "we aren’t sure what the exact effect of testosterone is" was saying that the "scientific facts" of pinning down the "creation of a gender identity" weren't yet fully established.

An interesting programme with some fascinating facts in but spoiled with pseudoscientific #genderwoowoo. It had a gullible professor of neuroscience whose name I have now forgotten. Well, either gullible or extremely cynical being willing to put politics ahead of science.

As shared on the other thread, here is the complaints form.

I'll dig it out in BBC Sounds, listen and send in my thoughts which I'm sure won't be the only one.

"So the things that nobody knows probably support our wobbly case?"

FFS.

I'm sure the East German/ Russian female athletes in the 70's who were forced into a doping regime and suffered severe health complications as a result of being given testosterone in order to compete, will be pleased to hear that their exploitation gave them a "male gender identity".

Yeah. And remind me what that is again would you?

Is it being good at woodwork and sitting with your hand down your pants while you watch TV? (That's you made non-binary DH, you're shit at woodwork)

JellySaurus · 03/01/2022 23:57

the "scientific facts" of pinning down the "creation of a gender identity" weren't yet fully established.

Perhaps because there is no science behind the notion of ' gender identity'. At least, no more science than explains any attachment to a religion, pseudo-religion, ideology, FOMO or social contagion.

Why the hell didn't they speak to Gina Rippon?

rabbitwoman · 04/01/2022 07:51

Interesting, but I think this is a repeat of an episode that first went out in 2016.....

...... A lot has happened since then!!!

Chersfrozenface · 04/01/2022 08:53

If this programme is available unedited, the BBC evidently don't know of, or are ignoring, anything that's happened since 2016..
