FiLiA Action to #FreeNazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from prison

FiLiA charity is organising a Women’s Solidarity Action to free Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from prison in Iran.

Nazanin has been in prison for more than five years. Yesterday was her birthday; another birthday she's spent separated from her husband and her seven-year-old daughter.

FiLiA say:
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a 37-year-old charity worker and British citizen holding dual Iranian nationality, was on holiday visiting her family in Iran when she was detained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. She has been held in Tehran for more than five-and-a-half years on bogus accusations of spying. Successive Conservative foreign secretaries, including Boris Johnson, have promised and failed to secure her freedom.

As many here will know, back in October her husband Richard began a public hunger strike outside the Foreign Office in London - his second hunger strike since she was detained - as part of his continued fight for Nazanin's release. He went without food for 21 days, but he had to stop there because he needs to remain well enough to care for their daughter, Gabriella.

Inspired by Margaret Owen's strike in solidarity with Richard, FiLiA is now organising the continuation of Richard Ratcliffe’s hunger strike in the form of a fasting relay.

Lisa-Marie Taylor, the chief executive of FiLiA, said, “Richard has made it clear he doesn’t want people to get poorly,” she said. “So we thought we’d organise a chain of women to each fast for a day to keep the pressure on the government and show Nazanin how much support she has from women in the UK and globally.”

Today is day eight, and Julie Bindel has taken the baton.

The Guardian reports that Participants in FiLiA’s campaign will be asked to email their MP with two demands. First, for Boris Johnson to fulfil his promise that Britain would repay the £400m it owed Iran for an unfulfilled 1970s arms deal, which is seen as precondition for the release of Zaghari-Ratcliffe and other detainees. Second, for a judicial review to be launched to investigate why the debt has not been paid.

This is something that we can all do, too. If you go here, there is a list of things we can do to support the campaign to free Nazanin.

Well done FILIA. It's appalling what has happened to Nazanin.

MaryGubbins · 27/12/2021 14:36

The slots to take a day are full till nov 2024. I really hope she is home before that.

ArabellaScott · 27/12/2021 15:03

Gosh, yes, Mary. Let's hope she is free very soon. Boris, if you can do one single good, worthwhile thing with your prime ministership, sort this mess.

1001 women have already committed to fast for her. Isn't that incredible?

1,001 Women have committed to fast for a day in a Solidarity Action in Support of the #FreeNazanin campaign.

We hope that most of those will not need to fast, and that governments work to #FreeNazaninNow

Do people really think this will make a difference?

It's a nice gesture but given Richard has done two (at least) hunger strikes which have made no difference with either the Uk Government or the Iranian Authorities what will this actually achieve in people's minds?

Have all of these one thousand plus women written letters to their MPs (as in personal emails / letters rather than campaigns that are usually just filtered off with an auto response generated), the FCO and organisations working directly with Nazanin and the other detained dual-citizens?

I really doubt the Iranian government are going to care about women fasting for a day sadly, as nice as the solidarity may be, women fast regularly for religious reasons in Iran - and indeed here - it's hardly the ground breaking for either Government for a woman to fast for a day.

I sincerely hope that everyone involved has already written letters to officials, protested, been to carols (definitely not as I was there and there was not 1000 people!), supported organisations on the ground etc. and continue to do so going forwards (as is suggested in the article).

Why weren't people fasting when the court case regarding the debt was delayed all the multiple times it already has been?

Sorry to come across as pessimistic but surely more realistic efforts and impact are needed now.

Hindsight is 20/20.

All we can do now is do the best we can now, rather than regetting past decisions.

I am sure that all participants are sending personalised letters, and we all can too.
