Tired of big fb groups that purport to be for women but actually don't accept gender critical people

Just watched someone being the victim of open aggression on an Irish one for talking about Gender critical feminists.

I gave up even browsing FB groups because every single one has a purity test to join. There will be a group about cute kitten photos and in order to join there will be questions like ‘are transwomen women?’ to make sure you agree with the mods.

Groups for women with autism are bad too. Incidentally you get a lot of self-identified autistic people in the groups as well, I understand (as a woman diagnosed later in life) that many women might have not received a diagnosis because the lack of knowledge in regards to autism in women and girls but you have a lot of people in those groups who are label collectors and seem to control the conversations. You aren’t allowed to “gatekeep” autism, or womanhood,

I'm in a few. Now mostly lurking. I am grimly fascinated by the cognitive dissonance and the lack of logic ("if women believed in themselves they'd not be scared of the new gender neutral music awards" was a recent fave from a "feminist" group). And the way the flimsy arguments trotted out are all from the same handbook (people are still using the existence of disorders of sexual development as a gotcha! Amazing!) Or the way transwomen will be inserted into a conversation that's got no relevance but transmen are rarely mentioned.

Mainly I lurk because I have young kids and I want to know where I will need to plug the gaps in their education.

OhHolyJesus · 23/12/2021 08:11

I got kicked out of a women's coaching group on FB on international women's day for talking about women and girls.

Find the radfem groups is my advice.

Maybe women need to set up more of their own groups, with exactly the same test, and retain a firm grip on the mod positions?
Takingtigermountain · 23/12/2021 10:37

Total dafties. I came off Facebook for this reason. I despair of these women's willingness to get rid of our hard fought for rights.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/12/2021 11:03

This "questions to enter group" thing is a bit odd.
One of our local groups has a couple of "things you would only know if you are from round here" questions - which is fair enough.

I tried to join a sort of science meme one last year - first question "how many genders are there?"
So I think a) why are you asking me that? and b) there was no option to say "as many as you like, but only 2 sexes, in humans".

Argh. The self-diagnosed drive me mad. I refuse to be in any group that allows them in.
ArabellaScott · 23/12/2021 13:46

You kind of have to set qu's to join a group, otherwise it's wall to wall spam and scammers.

Babdoc · 23/12/2021 13:56

CaptainMarvelDanvers, you might like the group “Gender Critical Autistics” on Facebook.

ArabellaScott · 23/12/2021 13:58

Also, there are increasingly a lot of gc feminist groups on FB. Cheering to go and find them and see how many friends are already on them! Smile

Porridgeislife · 23/12/2021 14:07

Even support groups for very specifically female health conditions are this way. My endometriosis groups are at pains to insist that men can suffer from endometriosis too and insists that we don’t use the terms women, female or ladies when asking for help.

Medical journals that refer to women are posted with an apologetic note for their exclusionary tone and an assurance they’ll be writing to the researcher to let them know the error of their ways.

Endometriosis is as common as T2 diabetes amongst women at around 10%. There are literally a couple of men worldwide who have been diagnosed and almost all have taken cross sex hormones (ie estrogen) prior to being diagnosed.

I had to leave a women's autism group after a male joined and insisted on detailing their transition. Poor women all just eagerly gave him the air time as we are taught to, and many autistic women seem to do this more than NT women. Perhaps trying extra hard to fit in. I wonder how a female doing the same in a male autism group would fare?

I’ve requested membership a while ago, not being accepted. It’s ok though, it’s probably for the best, I had to come out of a few gender critical groups as I was becoming obsessed. The information and discussion was good, but it made me angry that the discussions can’t be done in a wider arena without all the hullabaloo. I just don’t understand why people can’t see what’s in their face.

So I tend to stick forums, you know where I have to actually go to a webpage and browse - instead of flicking the social media feed. 🙈

Would be great for someone to test it out.

I can’t find a group which doesn’t allow the self-diagnosed.

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 23/12/2021 20:59

Which is why I don't belong to any autism groups.

Until you reject the wrong person and they plaster all over Facebook that you’re a hate filled terf group and you get mass reported into oblivion.

Luckily there are some good secret GC groups but it’s a shame that only women who know someone can be invited.

It is a shame, but I’ve heard about enough moles getting into GC social media groups that sadly it has to be that way.

That is a pretty good point, I’m part of two - but I ignore 90% of posts. My life would probably be better with being in none.

Aren’t we allowed to say “cunt” these days?
