"All Trans and Non-Binary Kids Need and Deserve Access to Puberty Blockers""

This article has just popped up on my Google Chrome homepage (along with ones about Rishi, Chip shops and covid so a mixed bag)

www.wellandgood.com/puberty-blockers/amp/

So PB are totally reversible, they are completely and utterly safe and there is no real data about Lupron and bone density so as long as one takes calcium supplements all is good.

Those dreadful, terrifying websites are a perfect illustration of why medicine should never be 'private'. When the patient pays directly there is no limit to the doctor's power, except the depth of the patient's purse.

allmywhat · 11/12/2021 10:14

Would these surgeons be allowed to amputate healthy limbs on request without legal and/or professional sanctions? There’s a market for that too.

Not a rhetorical question btw I’m genuinely curious about the answer!

TurquoiseBaubles · 11/12/2021 10:39

Is there any other aspect of medical treatment where the only way of diagnosing is self-diagnosis, and the methods of treatment are "whatever the patient wants".

I can't imagine going to my GP, telling her what is wrong with me and demanding she prescribe whatever I (or Google) think I need/want.

MrsMadderRose · 11/12/2021 11:26

There’s also a very weird and determined attempt to ignore the fact that puberty is important. Puberty is not just about reproductive ability or sexuality, it’s about brain maturity, strength, becoming an adult who can be responsible and do the things that society needs - work, look after others, make decisions. Seeing it as optional is disastrous on every level from personal to family to societal. Doctors and adults are telling kids that they can just decide not to grow up because it can be hard work or unsettling to go through bodily and emotional changes.

My DC are going through it at the moment. I often tell them, yes, this is hard and stressful, it can be tough but you’ll get through it. Spots, periods, weird things happening to your body that you’re not used to. We look for solutions. They get through things and accept things and feel more grown up and capable as a result. That’s part of the process.

Something else to consider, there has been a lot of promotion of asexuality by groups and organisations, could one of the reasons be because puberty blockers along with cross sex hormones can cause loss of sexual function? Could asexuality be used as an excuse to cover up that people may loose their sexual function?

MrsMadderRose · 11/12/2021 14:08

Yes I’ve noticed asexuality becoming a big thing to go on about and promote, and thought it was really odd. Loads of the types who list all their labels on Twitter etc include “ace”, even when they are also claiming to be pan, bi, lesbian or whatever.

ScrollingLeaves · 11/12/2021 14:42

“YellowTwo
Could asexuality be used as an excuse to cover up that people may loose their sexual function?“

It could well be.

It is also being used by adults, such as GG leaders, to try to rope children who are not yet sexual -so of course they aren’t asexual- into feeling conscious of their non sexuality and to make them feel they ought to have one.

ScrollingLeaves · 11/12/2021 14:48

Nullification must be very close to FGM, as I think another poster has said. It would be more expensive, and less painful because of anaesthetics but otherwise very similar in several respects I should imagine - except for adding mastectomy.

Anyone in a Western country wanting FGM for their daughters need not worry if it is illegal. All they need is a doctor to call it Nullification gender therapy.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/12/2021 15:35

Could asexuality be used as an excuse to cover up that people may loose their sexual function?

It was put forward by the Tavistock lawyers as such in the first Keira Bell hearing.

highame · 11/12/2021 16:46

It makes me feel very queasy and I can't help thinking, when I see the state the US is in, of the decline and fall. Not because of war but because society loses it's grip on what is and what is not really important.

The chattering classes have lost all sense. I despair Sad

SammyScrounge · 11/12/2021 22:37

The west has lost its moral compass. What kind of country lets this be done to its youngsters?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 12/12/2021 07:47

Had a quick scan and no-one has come along to explain how and why they approve of men paying to have a pseudo-vagina crafted for them in addition to their penis.

Did I miss it? Has anyone come along to educate me on this matter and why I should not judge the surgeons that offer it?

ASushiBitMyFinger · 12/12/2021 08:19

@allmywhat

Unless the idea is to hold them in a prepubertal (but still sexed, even if immature) state

Guess what?

I opened this thread to post this link. I am creeped out by the specific inclusion of “non-binary” in the quote.

That interesting paper, queering medical ethics on the topic of “ongoing puberty suppression” for nonbinaries, even raises, albeit declines to answer, the question of what kind of person would be interested in a sexual relationship with a permanently puberty-suppressed partner.

And on the Christmas forum, we have a happy clappy "what shall I give a non-binary 15 old as a Christmas present" normalising the whole ridiculous notion of 'non-binaryness' and implying that non non-binary girls aka female people are all about fashion makeup, and cuuuute things Envy < not envy

Just awful. People with mental health issues being encouraged to lie about it so they can get drugs and surgery. Ffs.

ImFluidLikeWater · 12/12/2021 15:03

Oh no I'm gonna get jumped on, but... Where's the lie y'all keep talking about? Which part is the lie?
I wish I'd gone on hormone blockers before I finished puberty, my childhood could've been so much more enjoyable then.

Thelnebriati · 12/12/2021 15:08

You assume you would have been happy, but the reality is its impossible to say how you would feel if you had taken a different course in your life.
If you'd had blockers you'd have the health issues associated with them, plus the dysphoria (which apparently persists because of the blockers.) Then you'd have to go through puberty anyway, later than everyone else your age.

Like it was for this child?

The jumping started quicker than I expected wow-
@Thelnebriati Probably less mental health issues than I do now tbh. If I could take back puberty I would without a doubt bc it's that that causes my dysphoria in the first place. I still wanna go on hormone blockers to stop my period. Blockers are temporary, puberty is not.
@OldCrone thanks for the article, I can only read the first two paragraphs of it, but thanks anyway

I don’t think it’s jumping on you to reply with posts explaining what the problems can be. Why do you feel like that’s being “jumped on’?

Are you taking the contraceptive pill? Cerelle all but stopped mine (I get some spotting, but that is when I go away for a weekend and leave all my medication at home) This is perhaps less intrusive then other treatments but allows you a 'break' from your monthly cycles.

Puberty is a natural part of human development.

TheWeeDonkey · 12/12/2021 18:25

I wish I'd gone on hormone blockers before I finished puberty, my childhood could've been so much more enjoyable then.

I get where you're coming from, puberty and periods in particular felt hellish for me and it wasn't until I started taking the pill that my hormones started to regulate, but 18 year old me was a completely different person to 12 year old me and I wouldn't have been able to cope with the changes in my life without the maturity that puberty brings.

Puberty isn't just sexual maturation, its the point where we start to mentally, emotionally and physically mature and we need to go through this change in order to meet the challenges of adult life which is another thing we cannot take a pill to avoid.

We can't go around it, we have to go through it. Such is life

Artichokeleaves · 12/12/2021 18:58

If I could persuade my GP to stop my periods my life would be a hell of a lot better too. It's a pretty common thing for females sadly.
