Looks Like #PressPause Has Worked (Conversion Therapy)

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10285677/Parents-backlash-set-brakes-new-gender-law-amid-fears-families-prosecuted.html

Ministers are poised to order a climbdown on a controversial gender conversion law over fears it could inadvertently criminalise parents and teachers.

Following an outcry, they could announce as soon as today that the Government will extend the consultation period on its plans to ban conversion therapy.

The law is designed to outlaw the practice of attempting to ‘convert’ gay children. But under pressure from the transgender rights campaigners, this has been extended to stop therapists trying to help children with gender dysphoria – a mismatch between biological sex and gender identity – to decide whether they really wish to transition.

Interesting!

Mollyollydolly · 07/12/2021 23:00

It's great seeing this in The Mail and the concerns articulated so well.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 07/12/2021 23:01

Please let this be true.

Datun · 07/12/2021 23:04

Placemarking (and poised to do a happy dance)

Imnobody4 · 07/12/2021 23:06

Fingers crossed.

DoubleTweenQueen · 07/12/2021 23:10

They need to start again and remove gender from it completely and take that aspect right back to the drawing board. Extending consultation period is a cop-out. It was only half of the usual period only? And probably set to not interfere with Christmas, so hardly s concession.

Not read the article though - will go see if my absolute cynicism is warranted.

Just in case, remember to fill in the government consultation form that Sex Matters has guidelines for.

ScrollingLeaves · 07/12/2021 23:19

From an email from SexMatters

“There are now 3 days left to take part in the consultation. Nearly 400 people have used our quick response form already and several dozen have told us they have submitted a full response. If you haven’t already done it yet please use our tools and respond to the consultation before it is too late to have your say.“

That doesn’t seem all that many. Could do with more. Sex Matters has guidelines on filling it in.

I'm afraid I don't see a great deal to celebrate - sorry. But still hopeful there may be a lot going on behind the scenes.

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2021 23:23

Aha.

Yeah, it already feels like a done deal.

Looking at this post retweeted by the Government equalities office, I'm not hopeful Angry.

Only 4 retweets and 7 likes on that Freer tweet since 2.57pm yesterday. That seems interesting in its own right.

DoubleTweenQueen · 08/12/2021 07:04

So angry with the mainstream media - focussing on a Christmas party last year, and a bit if covid variant. Why isn't this story front and centre?

WarriorN · 08/12/2021 07:09

Excellent l!

Lovelyricepudding · 08/12/2021 07:34

Extending the consultation does not mean they have realised what they are doing and that encouraging sterilisation of children is a bad thing.

What it might do though is prevent challenges to the legislation on the basis of an illegitimate consultation

Ministers are poised to order a climbdown on a controversial gender conversion law over fears it could inadvertently criminalise parents and teachers. I'm feeling hopeful. This suggests that government are aware that TRA's, SW et al will use legislation in ways it was never intended. Fingers crossed but am weary of how alert I'm having to be about legislation

Imnobody4 · 08/12/2021 08:10

I'm slightly heartened by the push back to Gires and Stonewall from the Law Commission on the Hate Crime bill.
I'm not at all impressed by Mike Freer. I don't think he has a clue about trans issues and will be guided by Stonewall.

lovelyweathertoday · 08/12/2021 08:11

Make sure you still fill in the consultation.

FrancescaContini · 08/12/2021 08:13

Thank you. I will definitely complete this.

Sex Matters are doing great work.

ScrollingLeaves · 08/12/2021 11:42

I still have to fill it in.

Remember, Stonewall is also getting people to fill in according to their agenda plus the people behind it just want it to go through, so it really matters to provide a counter balance.

DoubleTweenQueen · 08/12/2021 12:08

I think there must be a massive disconnect between Gvmnt and what’s actually going on in schools - the social media influence, and lobby groups in schools and the enormous rise in, particularly girls, id'ing as non-binary and trans.

And also take into account the plummet to mental health in children and young people due to the pandemic.

There is no joining the dots.

LGB Alliance are far more aware and call for sexuality and gender to be dealt with in separate bills - because there must be cast-iron protection of holistic exploration into trans id’ing/dysphoria/physical dysphoria in under 18s, at the very least.

Blackandwhitehorse · 08/12/2021 12:16

Sex Matters let you do a quick response via them,I just did it, only takes 10minutes.
