Something has definitely shifted at the BBC.

So far, four trans jokes on tonight's episode.

Three definitions:
Gerrymandering - misgendering Jerry Hall
Translate - the late that used to be early
Transmute - the mute that used to be loud

And, "We're back in transland in a way" following a joke about a man being a lesbian.

And we're only 10 minutes in!

Jokes are a good sign. Jokes at the BBC are especially pleasing!

lanadelgrey · 06/12/2021 18:53

Jokes assume an ease of normality - when your grand dad (Barry Cryer) makes fun it is no longer stunning and brave or very special. Maybe this is how it ends?

nauticant · 06/12/2021 18:54

Ends not with a bang but with a whimsy?

Flammkuchen · 06/12/2021 18:55

Translate is hilariousGrin

When I was listening to ISIHAC last week it set me wondering about Jack Dee, that surely he would not be taken in by Gender Woo?

Looking forward to listening to this latest episode!

Love I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. In the real world I've heard and seen plenty of jokes about trans identities (like the famous 'I identify as a green bin') so good to hear it from the BBC as well. Or maybe they are just secure in the average age of the ISIHAC audience.

Leafstamp · 06/12/2021 18:59

I'm definitely translate.

I'm so stunning and brave for being late these days.

WarriorN · 06/12/2021 20:19

I thought I heard something like that! Not that many though! Shock

These shows are usually recorded well in advance though aren't they? Pre Nolan?

Either way that's a good sign!

WarriorN · 06/12/2021 20:20

I bet they've been sitting on these for years Grin

Sexnotgender · 06/12/2021 20:23

That’s interesting. I can just about hear the frothing from here😂

nauticant · 06/12/2021 20:24

It was recorded on 11 October so just before the Nolan podcasts were released.

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2021 20:43

Yes jokes are good. Dh and I were eating and both looked at each other firstly in shock then we did a high five Grin.

I then told him about Desert island discs yesterday with Helen someone or other, who said she’d come out as Non binary because when she was a child she liked to do girl and boy things like climbing trees, so she knew she was both in her soul. Angry

MathSausage · 06/12/2021 21:44

I just contacted the BBC and complimented them on another fine episode, referring explicitly to this one tonight.

Somebodyelsestrain · 06/12/2021 22:39

What a relief! I haven't heard this week's ISIHAC and when I saw the thread title my heart sank at the thought of the show falling to the madness. So I'm very pleased to hear they are taking the piss in their inimitable style. Will listen ASAP.

daringdoris · 06/12/2021 23:10

Yes Lizzie, Helen MacDonald, the author of H is for Hawk. I heard that too. I was thinking how interesting she sounded (and how I should finish her book that someone has given me). Now I just think she's bonkers and frankly a bit dim (and will give the book away...)

I looked to see if there was an appropriate thread to share it on, it annoyed me so much!

It's hardly surprising that students come out with such nonsense when some university staff are so breathtakingly dense.

It probably says something about Lauren Laverne - there's very little written about the fact that this person is non-binary so not mentioning it would have been perfectly fine. Instead she asked about it, therefore normalising this weirdly wooly thinking from a best-selling author, academic and naturalist.

daringdoris · 06/12/2021 23:14

Oh! I see Helen has cut her hair! Yet more evidence that Helen must be non-binary! Hmm

Sorry, I hate being so eye-rolly but this is just such utter nonsense (am dealing with something similar IRL atm so maybe it's getting to me!)

Motorina · 06/12/2021 23:20

@Somebodyelsestrain yup, taking the piss, freely and without favour, as they do about everything else, is so much healthier than 'no debate'.
