"Pipe down, everyone, be quiet."

OP posts:

Odd. I really don't know what she means with that!

ErrolTheDragon · 04/12/2021 19:03

Hmm.... of course, it's not 'pipe down everybody' , is it?

aliasundercover · 04/12/2021 21:10

It sounds like the interviewer was prodding her to say something anti-linehan, and that was the best they got. You can be sure if Punch has said anything clearer it would have been included.

Seems to me that she was (understandably) trying to stay out of it.

BlueberryCheezecake · 04/12/2021 21:13

She seems to be saying if you have bigoted views, you're best off keeping them to yourself. Which is a very conflict-averse way of addressing bigotry.

CheeseMmmm · 04/12/2021 21:31

She says linehan brilliant and still is.

She was cornered.

Reads to me she says it's easier for her to pipe down and be quiet.

Obviously does not want to get into the topic and can't blame her.

And saying she wants to pipe down and be quiet on this is clear message to interviewer that she's not going to be drawn, drop it and move on.

CheeseMmmm · 04/12/2021 21:32

Ok yes re read everyone. From context I take it to be not an instruction to others. But how she feels in her situation.

'Today, his name is not so much associated with his pioneering comedy work – Father Ted, Brass Eye, The Fast Show – as his views on trans women, and his related suspension from Twitter for “hateful conduct”. Punch winces. “It’s sad,” she says. “And he just disappeared on the show and it wasn’t really ever talked about. When we did the pilot, I was like: ‘I can’t believe I’m working with Graham!’ He was so brilliant. He still is so brilliant. But, yeah, it’s like…” She sighs. “You gotta keep some stuff back. Pipe down, everyone, be quiet. You can get really put off by it.”'

My take-

Really admires linehan for work says still brilliant.
Indicates uncomfortable with fact he was never mentioned again.
Is not clear who she is referring to. To pipe down. And the put off bit. It's VERY vague.

Does she mean linehan should?
That she has to about thinking he's brilliant and the oddness of him never being mentioned?
Of those who wanted him out?
Of those who don't think it's right when people are gone and as if never existed?

I suppose anyone can take what they want from that bit. While she is actually ambiguous.
