Help - finding a DfE compliant video on gender and gender ideology

Hi,

The school are using this video for Y9, and in the questions afterwards asks 'What are the three biological sexes?"...

I questioned its use, and ran it past Safe Schools Alliance, who agreed with me that it is not compliant and with their help, I wrote to ask the school to remove it. The school have pretty much ignored all of the points I made, have said that cis is used in science to mean the same as and therefore cisgender is an accepted term etc and that they ''don't have time to engage in an academic debate on this issue''. They have also said that due to the time pressures in school, they will look at a different video to use if I can find one that is compliant. I have gone back to SSA, but does anyone know of one which is compliant that I can ping back to them over the weekend?!

Sorry I can't help, but this is by way of a bump.

Perhaps Transgender Trend, they have resources www.transgendertrend.com/schools-resources/

Zerogravity · 28/11/2021 06:57

I don't know but they want you to find one that IS compliant or they'll continue using the one that isn't? In the meantime, I would write again and insist that they stop using non-compliant videos!

Panicmode1 · 28/11/2021 07:03

I've already written twice...they say that they just do not have the time to find something else, that the terms used are all in general use and accepted, and they have a 'moral and statutory duty to teach this subject'. I have twice pointed out I have no issue with the subject matter, but they also have a legal duty to ensure they are complying with DfE guidance and teach with legally compliant information.

I feel as though I'm going round in circles with them....I will look at Transgender Trend, thank you.

Who are you writing to exactly? Can you take it higher? I would keep insisting - they might need to teach the subject but they cannot just use any video. If necessary they can teach without a video!

The head of PSHE, copied in to the Head and the Chair of Governors. I haven't heard back from the latter two, but Ofsted were in the week before last so I think they were a bit busy!!

The school are using this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQAFYy15N7E for Y9, and in the questions afterwards asks 'What are the three biological sexes?

According to the video, the answer to this question seems to be 'male, female and intersex'. So one complaint should be that it's factually incorrect.

It also says that transgender people don't make any physical changes to their bodies, and if they do, they are not 'transgender' but 'transsexual'. So even Stonewall wouldn't like this.

And it includes a Barbie - GI Joe type scale for gender to help children choose their gender identity based on how they like to dress.

That's a lot of misinformation for a sub 4-minute video.

And why are they using an American video they found on YouTube instead of a proper educational resource?

Bump

Meagaidh · 28/11/2021 11:18

Bumping again as this is so important. It's being taught that there are three biological sexes?

RedCarpetRebellion · 28/11/2021 11:26

It’s schools responsibility to find material that complies with DfE. They can’t demand parents do their job for them and that they’ll continue to breach the guidance until then.

I’d put in a formal complaint. It’s not an ‘academic’ debate it’s the DfE guidance. If they ignore this DfE guidance how many other ones do they ignore?

Panicmode1 · 28/11/2021 11:52

@oldcrone..I have made all of your points, twice. I also used info the Safe Schools Alliance sent me, but she is rebutting it all.

She is ignoring the points so I will have to escalate to the Chair of Governors, but I'm just not sure I have the energy. I will have to find it however!!

Is your MP GC?

Panicmode1 · 28/11/2021 11:55

Yes the three sexes thing is what first made me stop in my tracks. She claims that is not what the video says, but the first question on the worksheet after they show it is, "what are the three biological sexes?". I pointed out that intersex people are male or female and they could well have boys (it's a single sex grammar) with Kleinfelters. How are those boys being made to feel if they are being told they are neither one or the other.

Escalate to a formal complaint. It's not your job to plan their lessons for them. That's outrageous! Also contact Ofsted right now. The report will be being written as we speak. If you leave it they won't care so much as it will be another 3+ years till the next Ofsted.

Unless this is part of the formal complaint process avoid it because they will ignore it.

It needs to be stage one of the schools formal complaint process to have a chance to make a difference. With formal complaint put in headings.

Agree contact ofsted about parent views now as they’ve just been in.

Panicmode1 · 28/11/2021 14:11

@massivehoard Yes.

Sadly, I don't think there are any.

Pupils at my school were shown similar material, and after some of us teachers pointed out the flaws*, we were allowed to write our own.

(Actually this was a long and very painful process and I have scuppered any chance I might have had of ever being promoted. Lucky to still have my job, I suppose.)
