Would JKR look good in ermine (bet she'd choose fake ermine)

Further to the thread posted below - and with thanks to Mollyollydolly who's idea it is, if you would like to see JKR invited to be a Peer of the Realm then please add your reasoning to this thread.

It is a source of personal pain to me that I do not know this woman because I'd dearly like buy her a drink.

I have no idea, therefore whether she would welcome a nomination to be a member of the House of Lords, but I am fairly confident that anyone who has been attacked for the length of time that she has might, at the very least, see such a thread as cheering.

Perhaps even almost as cheering as me saying "no way, put your money away, doll face, I'll get your round in. The very least I can do is buy you a pint because I owe you. My goodness, how I owe you".

Criteria is here: lordsappointments.independent.gov.uk/how-to-apply-2

and states:

The House of Lords Appointments Commission will make its recommendations on the basis of merit.

Please summarise how you would make an effective contribution to the work of the House of Lords and why you consider that you are suitable for recommendation as a non-party-political peer.

The Commission requires evidence of all of the following, and you should ensure that you have covered each of these in your application:
Ability to make an effective and significant contribution to the work of the House of Lords in your area of expertise and the wide range of other issues that come before the House

A proven record of significant achievement in your chosen field
Willing and able to commit the time necessary to make an effective contribution in the House

An understanding of the constitutional framework
That you are independent of any political party and intend to remain independent

It would be tremendous to have JKR as a Peer. Such erudition, integrity and strength. I admire her so much.

At a time when female “role models” appear to be limited to a never ending parade of replicas seemingly valued for their looks and compliance, women need a role model who is dignified, kind, charitable, intelligent, erudite, creative and a defender of freedom of speech, who will bravely stand up for her beliefs in the face of threats and bullying behaviour. She represents everything women should aspire to.

IndominusRex · 23/11/2021 09:22

She would be INCREDIBLE!!!!!

SelfPortraitWithPterodactyl · 23/11/2021 09:53

Absolutely. I cannot think of anyone in the public sphere who better represents the humanity, sanity, generosity and bravery that I would like to see in politics (and everywhere).

Not to be weird and stalkery but she regularly pops up in my dreams now - I think my subconscious has made her into a sort of shorthand for courage and a call to action. Grin

She'd be a superb addition. Sensible, intelligent, brave like a lion. Love her. Head screwed on, much common sense.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/11/2021 19:35

She'd be a really good peer (given we seem stuck with this system for now.)

I'm surprised she's not a Dame yet.

Bellendejour · 23/11/2021 21:04

I love this! Needed a nice positive thought today! Will get nominating!

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria

I reckon we do it en masse on here. It looks like we/me needs to send the form to her office to ask her to fill it out and submit it.

At the very least, I assume that getting an email with a long list of people saying "we'd like that a great deal" would be a salve against the nonsense* she is subjected to online.

*this word does not accurately reflect the depth of the abuse she has been subjected to.

Oh, do people kinda apply for peerages then?! I thought it was a surprise to them? (well, except those who know they're getting it as it's effectively a thanks for doing something for the powers that be).

So, do they all know their name is in the hat? What about those who reject the honour? Surely they haven't applied?

Worth it just to watch Michael Cashman’s face.

MuthaFunka61 · 23/11/2021 21:29

My reasons for nominating JK:

Integrity, eloquence, humanity and strong healthy boundaries in the face of adversaries.

Plus she rocks! Does that count?

Looks easy enough.

Someone upthread said that she'd be ineligible to be an indie peer because she has donated to the Labour Party - but, I wonder whether someone could say "the Labour Party went rogue and I'm now independent"?

Worth giving it a go @vivariumvivariumsvivaria.

If you don't ask you don't get.

If Churchill could change party in mid-Parliament while he was an MP I don't see why she shouldn't stop supporting a party that has sold her down the river.
