How have we got to this state, where people can say this and believe it? Its like we are reverted to some pre-enlightenment age.

How bizarre

This is a charitable explanation. Personally I just think it's bonkers. Reminds me of a Harriet Harman interview where she was talking about women's rights, got asked about men in women's sports and suddenly flipped to 'it's soooo complicated'

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/11/2021 09:37

She's an idiot with an agenda.

I nicked this from Twitter. I would love to see Philomena Cunk on gender.

Who is this person who thinks you are a liar if you know what a woman/man is.

Does she mean “why” in the philosophical sense of wondering about life, like “why are we here?”, “why aren’t we transparent blobs that reproduce asexually?” “Why aren’t we green like plants?” “Why are there two sexes?” …

Because if she actually means what I think she’s saying - that she doesn’t know how to differentiate between men and women- then I think she’s the liar.

Who is she snd what was the context?

Ellie-Mae has been on the left of the Labour Party for a long time - pre-Corbyn era. A close friend of Owen Jones and associates, think she was on the WhatsApp group of Corbynite-friendly media 'outriders' who used to get messaged with the line to take in the media whenever Corbyn's inner circle needed media support. She worked in trades unions for a long time, small-l labour politics are a big thing for her. Was in a relationship with Sam Kriss for a while before he got cancelled for something (I think falling foul of the Me Too happenings). Mates with that Abi woman (journalist/activist) who ended up moving to America too. That group are all very close socially.

For what it's worth I think she's got where she has on talent/hard work, not through connections.

Apologies if this is a slightly too literal response to the OP's question!

tabletennistop · 18/11/2021 10:02

I think she uses the word “people” because her adoption of Gender Identity politics prevents her from communicating the sex of who she’s actually talking about, hence the oddness. I think she means to say she doesn’t know why some men are women and why some women are men

Ah, well if that IS the explanation, then all that does is illustrate why, we need to keep words as discrete and exclusive categories of meaning, as otherwise we can't understand and communicate with each other.

So it is important to hold onto men as a sex category (human adult male) and women as a sex category ( human adult female). Making words, and categories, inclusive just destroys our ability to communicate!

But who is that woman? Does anyone know?

And what she really should have said is, 'I don't understand why some people have gender dysphoria and no-one does' .

Writes leaders for The Guardian, I believe. John McDonnell has tweeted congratulations to her for that interview and is getting robust responses asking if Labour is actually interested in winning elections.

Helleofabore · 18/11/2021 10:08

I noticed at the end of that segment too, she adopted an ‘I am alright Jack’ approach. In that ‘I am not bothered by transwomen, and the majority agree’.

But the out and out lie that no woman has been harmed was very bald faced. I wish the presenter had said ‘… er… that is clearly not true with 7 women raped by transwomen in prison that we know of.’ But they did not.

Plus. The whole ‘I have so many trans friends’ is just a false call to authority. It really is.

I wish politicians would stop coming out with ' its so complicated' when asked simple questions like this or ' what is a woman'. Its not complicated. Everyone with a basic understanding of biology and evolution knows humans are animals and we have given animal species words to distinguish between male and female in that species (very useful words - ask a farmer!), and woman and man, are the words for our species.

What they mean is ' I am terrified of the backlash if I answer this truthfully'. Just be honest about your cowardice. I'd actually have more respect for you.

And FFS. People. Stop misapplying that YouGov Poll. It doesn’t say that unequivocally and unconditionally the majority of women believe Twaw. It just doesn’t. Stop fucking lying.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/11/2021 10:19

There needs to be a Fact Check article on polling around this issue.

Thelnebriati · 18/11/2021 10:25

The reason why some people identify as the opposite sex is a red herring when it comes to sex based language and rights, which is why she gave that as her answer. She's being evasive.

merrymouse · 18/11/2021 13:25

Maybe she means she doesn’t know why we don’t all reproduce asexually?

However I don’t know why that would be relevant to the discussion.
