Support for parents of children possibly exploring trans identity

Hi, I’ve followed these boards quietly for a while and am familiar with some of the issues. On behalf of a friend I would really appreciate some support resources to help her navigate her 14 year old talking about a possible trans identity. I looked at Young Minds which is helpful but quickly recommends Stonewall & mentions GIDS. I looked at Transgender Trend too. Essentially I’m looking for something with a watchful waiting approach and space or support for my friend to think through how best to support without full affirm just yet. I remember there was a helpful thread but it doesn’t seem to be there any more from April. TIA

Bayswater Support Group bayswatersupport.org.uk have been mentioned here before I believe, also I think there's a new group called Genspect though I don't know much about it? Think there's one or two others as well that I can't remember just now... Oh and Lily Maynard's blog is very good lilymaynard.com

The Gender: A Wider Lens podcast is well worth a listen for any parent. Stella O'Malley is also involved with Genspect.

There are some therapists that are following the watchful waiting approach as well. Hopefully someone will come along and tell you more.

This was a useful recent thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4396064-best-web-site-to-direct-to

Helleofabore · 15/11/2021 13:10

Stella O'Malley is good - genspect.org (as 3times mentioned)

segm.org is also a good source of information, not necessarily support.

There is a board on MN for LGBT families/kids, though I'm not honestly sure where it is to point you to it, OP

Found it: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/lgbt_parents

The Gender Exploratory Therapy Association might be possible avenue for that. Sasha Ayad of Gender: A Wider Lens is involved. Kind of early days though, I think.

The thing she should be looking at is all the other things going on in her child’s life, as well as peer pressure on line and at school.

If you listen to the Nolan podcast Episode 5 about Stonewall in which he talks to Dr David Bell a doctor who used to work at the gender clinic at the Tavistock he explains how many factors might be affecting a young teen.

Likewise there was a sensitive article by a psychologist, Lisa Marciano, posted on this board. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1468-5922.12711
She explores the case of a de-transitioner ( natal girl) and what it was in her life that led her to transition in the first place.

Every child is individual but discussions and articles like this help armour a parent against the pressure to only ‘affirm’.

Don't know if ROGD applies to your child but the info might help nonetheless
