North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commisioner

On the 25th November, we vote again to appoint the PFCC in North Yorkshire. Historically I think the turnout for voting is pretty low for this role and the first time I was aware of the polling date was when I got my card through. We have seen a bit of a shift in opinion of some PFCC s in some areas recently and I think this may be an opportunity. They are all vowing to address VAWG and one Independent declaring that politics does not belong in policing. I am going to write to each of them with a few queries. I think NYP held an Intersectionality conference and the fire service have a pride engine. I can’t seem to find out the Police and Fire’s involvement with Stonewall though, anyone know? I don’t know how many North Yorkshire people there are on here, but if we all voted and spread the word, I (maybe naively) think we could have an impact.

Thanks for this, I got my polling card or whatever it's called. I'll be voting. Interested in responses if you get any

Meceme · 11/11/2021 11:21

Thanks for this. Will also be voting and would be interested in any replies you get. I will also be contacting the candidates to see where they position themselves on single sex provision. Will report back if I get any replies.

Funny how they all mention protections for women - I'd like to know how they define 'women'

So little information out there on the candidates (apart from the Indy), very frustrating. I can find a basic para for all but not much else. Seems quite clear that this role is not taken seriously by the parties and I think that’s appalling given recent events. I will write and ask questions, but from some basic research I think WEP, Liberal dems and conservatives may well be out for me.

@Masdintle that’s what I would like to know and their position on paying lobbying groups from the public purse.

How actively are they campaigning? In the last election, we didn't get so much as a leaflet telling us who the candidates were for Durham. There's no wonder there is such a low turnout if that's the case, everywhere.

Whatthechicken · 11/11/2021 14:02

@PickAChew there are a few pics on twitter…with local MP etc., only two seem to have an active account. Had no leaflets yet, the indie has his own website, there’s just not much there that I can see…maybe they think that there is no point as people will remember them from last time, maybe their parties just don’t hold this position with any regard so don’t throw much money at it…IDK it just feels someone could make this position count, and given all that has happened recently with the police, someone could make a difference.

The other parties may well think there's no point really campaigning, as round here the Conservatives could stick a blue rosette on anybody no matter how crap at the job and they'd still get in no problems. Which is why we're in this mess in the first place.

Aye, they used to think that about red rosettes in Co Durham! Labour police commissioner got in but the council is now run by everyone but!

It is such an opportunity missed, given the comments of the previous incumbent and the general prevalence of concern for women's safety in the news.

I wondered what the voting card was for
I've just applied for a job in NYCC
The questions:
Do you identify as the same gender you were assigned at birth?
Do you live full time in the gender you were assigned at birth
Sex isn't mentioned at all
