Great article. Can’t believe what some of her colleagues think is acceptable 😮

They just want to be ‘right’ with the students. I have found - from the teachers and lecturers I know - that there can be an attitude of ‘I’m so cool - I’m down with the kids!’ with some.

MrsFin · 07/11/2021 10:51

Did you hear her on R4 Woman's Hour this week? Worth a listen.
Shocking how she was treated, for years.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/11/2021 11:00

It beggars belief that any colleague could do as he is still doing and not get brought to book. His tweets are public, the contents must surely bother someone at Sussex?

No teacher / lecturer us left in any doubt as to the expectations around SM. I can't see how his repeated utterances haven't been dealt with by his employer.

It's ridiculous. And bloody scary!

HereticFanjo · 07/11/2021 11:04

She writes beautifully and so clearly. Her students should learn from her.

This was in the Guardian/ Observer and it almost shows the other side of this - what's driving Stock's attackers.

Sonia Sodha is outstanding.

As for Stock's colleagues, it's astonishing how far people's moral compasses can make them depart from their moral selves when they're convinced they're right. I hope that they have a moment of realisation of what they've endorsed and facilitated.

AliceThorpe · 07/11/2021 11:26

I suspect a lot of her colleagues are scared that the same thing might happen to them.

FindTheTruth · 07/11/2021 11:39

Members of the awkward squad are existential threats to the social herd. And herds, it turns out, can be easily led. They can sometimes turn into mobs.

Frenchfancy · 07/11/2021 12:06

I think the comments must have been closed for some reason. There are only 5 comments, all supporting Prof. Stock. They have 1.5k likes against them and only about 17 dislikes. Very telling.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/11/2021 12:28

Golly gosh! Can't blame them for closing the comments then. We can't have common sense getting out of hand.

OldCrone · 07/11/2021 14:03

As I write this, a former colleague, whose office was four doors from mine, is tweeting that there will never ‘be a full accounting of all the ways people within the institution aided and abetted her’.

This is the tweet she's referring to.

Add that woman to the Honorary Dr and you start to get a real feeling for just how beset she was on a daily basis.

I like this tweet:

Woke academic Twitter is VERY CROSS that the woman they hounded out of a job is giving INTERVIEWS and selling BOOKS and being MENTIONED IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS instead of GOING AWAY and BEING QUIET like they told her to.

twitter.com/Wilus1969/status/1457029604447858689?s=20

As Kathleen Stock said in her interview with Julie Bindel (I paraphrase):

Shutting me up by taking my job from me. How's that working out for you?

Looking at that persons twitter feed and you realise just how potent the combination of total self belief combined with a very average intellegence really is. I was looking for anything that gave a hint of shame or even fear but it seems the combination above really does repels shame (and logic, tragically).

RoyalCorgi · 07/11/2021 15:40

I notice with the Mail that quite often when comments are moderated in advance, the moderators just give up after a while, presumably when there is such a big volume of comments that they can't keep up with them. Just look at the ratio of likes to dislikes: the comment "Don't understand why the people who have been threatening this woman have not been arrested, including the University who have failed in their duty to protect her in the work place." has 3000 likes and 19 dislikes.

People feel really strongly about this issue, and rightly so.

FindTheTruth · 07/11/2021 16:58

Embarrassing I like that tweet too

I suspect there’s a lot of truth in this. Staff are frightened that students will turn on them next (I can sympathise with this) so they’re trying to be “on their side”.

I can't help thinking that much of their rage against KS is a potent mix of envy and the realisation of their own mediocrity beside someone of her ability.
