In an article in New Statesman by Gaby Hinsliff Nancy Kelley is quoted as saying re the Equality Act

“We respect their right to do it, and we think it’s not really in trans women’s best interest to be accessing a service that feels so strongly they shouldn’t be there” t.co/b4zoCBkON5

I will believe that she means to allow single sex spaces to remain single sex spaces when I see a full statement.

And besides, the damage done is going to take decades to fix because there is now a whole generation who feel it is their entitlement. So, it will take more than one statement, it will take a continued reassurance and adoption by the prominent activists.

sadly

BloodinGutters · 05/11/2021 12:06

The stonewall manifesto is still on the website saying they want to get rid of the single sex exemptions, it still says they want to get rid of the rape by deception claus for transpeople and the spousal veto.

The statement is a manipulative appeal to get women ‘allies’ to come out and say they want tw to be included in womanhood.

It’s emotional manipulation that’s all.

Imnobody4 · 05/11/2021 12:18

I agree I don't trust her an inch, but they must be feeling the heat and I don't see how they can continue in the way they have. I think they may have given up on getting rid of single sex spaces but they're going to have to state it up front and clearly. However that just makes them another transphobic organisation. (Maybe the T will leave the LGB in a huff and set up their own organisation.)

I'm just reminded of what N K said in the beginning.

I’m really focused on the idea that we don’t have to convert everybody to our way of understanding gender,” Nancy Kelley said in her first interview since taking up the position as head of the UK’s leading gay rights charity. “For Stonewall to succeed, it doesn’t have to make people believe as it believes. What it has to do is make people support changes that make trans lives easier.”

The, irrespective of the consequences of this for women or other protected characteristics must have been said internally.

Artichokeleaves · 05/11/2021 12:32

If Kelley believes she can make me do anything then I'm afraid she has another think coming. It's a remarkably revealing choice of phrase.

Although if Kelley wants to spin it as 'we'll have third spaces since we don't want to be in these unwelcoming spaces' while managing to wholly blot out of her head that this 'unwelcoming' actually means women pointing out that this negatively impacts on and excludes females from their own services and spaces, and that the world does not revolve solely around male people? If that means stopping targeting the removal of female only spaces from females, she can imagine it in any way that suits her.

I will however be pointing out the actual truth compared to the chosen presented truth.

Reptar · 05/11/2021 15:33

Its 100% a propaganda piece and I'm not buying it.

Stonewall was turned away from its original purpose, used to push this agenda, has served its purpose and now they get to blame uppity women and gay people everyone else for its demise.

Does anyone have a link to a non paywalled version of ghd Hinsliff article. Like an archived one. Cheeky I know.

I really wish newspapers would give you access to a single issue for a couple of quid. I'd buy all kinds.

It might be worth your while putting the URL into the search box on web.archive.org to see if it's been saved (I can see it has been but for cache reasons it would load for me anyway).

Yes, this is just obfuscation. 'Best if they don't know the full story, just get them to chant the mantra'.

It comes across as a less sexy version of The Matrix : Comprehension is not a requisite of cooperation.

Yes, that's it. 'Don't ask questions, just do as you're told.'

Angelwings77 · 05/11/2021 18:46

Sorry but anything that comes out of Stonewall and Nancy Kelley's mouth, as a lesbian, I now view as lies and utter bollocks!

donquixotedelamancha · 06/11/2021 06:51

I don't think that's a chink of light, I think it's an admission that NK is aware of the law. I never thought SW didn't know the law, they just lie about it in order to change practice.

Now that everyone knows they've been lying they will have change the wording of their training but they are still misrepresenting the law and painting anyone who want single sex provision as monsters.

When they get rid of NK, then we'll know they've started to change.

Not to derail, but that’s literally how newspapers work? Pop down to your nearest shop and buy one?

Crankyoldboiler · 06/11/2021 08:12

Note the not so subtle shifting of blame implied in "a service that feels so strongly that they (i.e. Transwomen) shouldn't be there". It's those nasty women being hurty to transwomen again! If only they would just be nice, this wouldn't be a problem.

NoThankYouSaurus · 06/11/2021 08:44

I wouldn't trust anything said in an article with Gaby Hinsliff's byline. Her Guardian review of Helen Joyce's Trans amounted to "this is mean, don't read it". And she doesn't like children much, which makes me think she probably has little grasp of safeguarding concerns with regard to young people and Stonewall's influence on young minds. I imagine anything cooked up between her and Nancy Kelly is less journalism and more reputation management/propaganda.

Just block Javascript to disable the paywall - works for the NS and NYT among many other publications. The NoScript extension is good, including for all kinds of data etc protection.

This. The reason transwomen should not be in single sex spaces is not because the lack of welcome might hurt transwomen, it's because of the impact their presence has on women and girls.

The really sad thing is that twenty years ago, when I was a student, there would be the very occassional trans woman in the ladies. Doing her best to pass, with varying degrees of success, and being politely ignored because of it.

Now you have bearded eejits like that SNP councillor claiming to be women. That means people like me who, twenty years ago, would have looked the other way are now wanting to draw firm boundaries. So transwomen who ae simply quietly living their lives are excluded along with all the other penis-people.

TRAs have a lot to answer for. Not least by those they are suppossedly advocating for.
