As we know, the testimony of the victims was dismissed because they had troubled backgrounds but I had not appreciated how hard Liz MacKean fought for the story and what it cost her as the BBC closed ranks in her face.

please go and read who you are aligning yourself with

Honestly, Catherina. Shall we simply keep posting all the really problematic posts that prominent transitioned males have said in the past?

You need to start addressing arguments on their merit and stop this constant 'look who you are aligning yourself with'! It has not worked so far, and frankly your repeated use of it simply shows that you have no arguments that will withstand robust discussion.

It is like telling us that there is only a few thousand ''GCs" in the UK.

Let's get down to it.

Does this person deserve to tell the world of her abuse? Yes? or no?

Do you honestly believe that only pure people should get to tell their story? Are you engaging in victim blaming?

TedImgoingmad · 02/11/2021 18:18

The BBC as an institution is rotten, Imo. That does not negate the work of individual employees like Liz MacKean, working within an institution and trying to make it look hard at itself and do better. The rot comes from the BBC bosses ignoring people like her, threatening her job and marginalising her. The same goes for journalist's like Caroline Lowbridge and Stephen Nolan. Brave doesn't even cover what these 3 journalists have done in the current climate - a rotten, vicious, dystopian climate created by the people you align yourself with.

But, if you accept the BBC's rotten, then you must accept that Stonewall has helped make it so, since they effectively run it.

TedImgoingmad · 02/11/2021 18:22

these 2 journalists that should read

Helleofabore · 02/11/2021 18:23

BBC rotten to the core and that cotton ceiling piece is one piece of evidence for that.

Why?

Specifically, why? Not an ad hominem attack. Not discounting the data which has been declared as being exactly what it is, qualitative in nature and the author has captured anecdotal evidence.

Do you or do you not believe that these events happened Catherina? And if they have happened, why are you trying to discredit the article instead of saying.... 'this is a problem, and it needs to be addressed. If there are males out there that are actively coercing lesbians, let's address it before it goes any further. Particularly if they are part of the LGBT+ community'.

Why instead are you participating in continuing the coercion through actively participating in discouraging any lesbians from coming forward in the future?

Bellusaurus · 02/11/2021 18:23

Anyway, OJ claims JM's tweet from page 1 of this thread (this story shows we should not dismiss witnesses when they report sexual coercion) equates trans people with Savile Hmm

"This is a BBC journalist comparing trans people to Jimmy Saville. Beyond belief, frankly." says OJ

Nope, says JM.

Well why doesn't BBC report of gay rape of straight men, says OJ.

We do, says JM. and here's a link to Journalism for Dummies.

(Can't be bothered breaching the secure citadel that is OJ's, "let's transform media" twitter account to take screenshots - that's verboten. Utter eejitry... But that's a paraphrase)

ChateauMargaux · 02/11/2021 18:28

Liz MacKean sacrificed was silenced and it cost her her position at the BBC and ultimately her career.

The voices of women were not enough.

Hundreds of women were raped but we are still left with those smiling pictures of JS and that hideous clip the teenager being groped on love TV.

One account said 'he molested at least one boy and numerous girls'. Why are we left with narrative that the abuse of boys is more abhorrent than the abuse of girls and women?

borntobequiet · 02/11/2021 18:29

I was surprised this was apparently not common knowledge, given that Private Eye had been making thinly veiled references to JS and his vile practices for decades. I thought everyone in the media knew.

FindTheTruth · 02/11/2021 18:32

[quote Bellusaurus]I loved this article by a friend of hers, including the photo of her coming out to meet the press after her work on Savile was vindicated. Hope - but doubt - she'll get the credit she's due.

Must read!!!!!!

She was gorgeous inside and out. bloody hell I hope the programme does her justice.

Artichokeleaves · 02/11/2021 18:33

Catherina - are you seriously saying if you don't agree with or approve of someone you're ok with them being raped?

FlyingOink · 02/11/2021 18:39

If there are comments to be made about a rape victim and her online presence, that's for another thread.

TrevorFountain · 02/11/2021 18:39

That's a great blog piece by Jackie Long.

TedImgoingmad · 02/11/2021 18:40

Thanks @Bellusaurus

OJ seems over-tired. Early bath and bed for him, I think.

FindTheTruth · 02/11/2021 18:40

@TrevorFountain

Liz MacKean deserves a blue plaque
Right then, how can we get them both a blue plaque? this has to happen
ChateauMargaux · 02/11/2021 18:40

Reading all this... I wish Liz was the hero of the documentary and the JS character was a minor one, in the background only, not with a 'name' acting the role.

Datun · 02/11/2021 18:42

You need to start addressing arguments on their merit

That's never going to happen. The stupid plopping, is an end in itself.

Datun · 02/11/2021 18:47

Liz MacKean should have a statue. She should be on the fucking fourth plinth.

Dear lord.

The woman who is responsible for bringing to justice one of the most depraved predators in this country, and no-one even knows who the fuck she is.

TrevorFountain · 02/11/2021 18:49

I believe there's a Blue Plaque Committee or some such thing. Women are under-represented, I have read.

A bit like public named statues. (And when they get them they're shit.)

NecessaryScene · 02/11/2021 18:51

Well, one of the questions that piece poses is - what happened to whatever Olly Lambert was planning? He was apparently recording a lot of interview material with MacKean in 2014, presumably for a documentary?

(Interesting to see his name pop up again - he worked on Stella O'Malley's Trans Kids: It's Time To Talk, and did that entertaining talk on Posie's channel about what it was like to deal with the TRA side).

TedImgoingmad · 02/11/2021 18:53

@FlyingOink

I disagree. Liz MacKean marched into her boss's office and told him what for for his having dismissed her investigation as (paraphrasing) "just on the say so of some girls". I imagine those girls being in a reform school had a large impact on his dismissive attitude. The discussion about the worthiness of one of the victims in the cotton ceiling article is a direct comparison, both to the attitude towards a victim and the attitude towards the journalist (and the fact the BBC sat on this story for some time, and probably only allowed its release to save face post Nolan). This discussion is precisely what Liz MacKean risked her career for.
SpringCrocus · 02/11/2021 18:55

Sadly, John McManus seems to have removed the series of tweets where he handed LOJ his arse. Presume he's been got at. Sad.

Bellusaurus · 02/11/2021 19:01

Meirion Jones (a man btw - Welsh name) gives his take here today
threadreaderapp.com/thread/1455441412766449667.html
Actually she leaked the papers to ITV alone, he says - and BBC shafted them both.

FindTheTruth · 02/11/2021 19:03

"he seemed to speak in catchphrases that created what Jones described as “a screen between him and people around him”

Jingle

reminds me of something

SpringCrocus · 02/11/2021 19:05

Correction.
He's removed the first tweet, but not the rest. Shame he removed the first one, it was obvious he was only drawing parallels with the ignoring of the girls involved in the JS investigation, and the long term ignoring of the Lesbians in the Cotton ceiling investigation.

FindTheTruth · 02/11/2021 19:05

yes. if anyone know's how to campaign for a statue, pls share
FlyingOink · 02/11/2021 19:05

TedImgoingmad I didn't see that angle being examined by the person trying to derail the conversation but I take your point.
