"The Verity team cheered with recognition hearing
@GRobinsonDUP acknowledge there wouldn't be a need for this debate if these conditions affected men. And it is shameful. Thank you #EndoPCOSDebate #APPGforPCOS #1in10"

twitter.com/veritypcos/status/1455230569193906177

"We would like to acknowledge that so many of the MPs in the debate include and acknowledge assigned female at birth (AFAB) individuals in this very important discussion #EndoPCOSDebate Clapping hands sign"

Men are men, and women are word salad

FFS.

I think we need to stop assigning people as female. Think of the number of female-specific conditions we could eliminate.

Frankly, what kind of person would assign an innocent newborn baby as female given the prevalence of conditions like endometriosis?

TurquoiseBaubles · 01/11/2021 19:43

Has that second one gone already?

This really is shitty, the entire thing. I've suffered from (and been ignored for) endometriosis all my life. I now see my daughter going through the same thing with seemingly even less understanding and longer waiting lists Angry

No man, ever, has suffered from endometriosis.

BlaydonRaces · 01/11/2021 19:55

Yeah looks like the one with AFABI has vanished. Must have been all the terven comments pointing out the linguistic discrepancy

Well now "men" can get it, I'm sure the funding, research and treatment will be pouring in, no?

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 01/11/2021 20:02

I just realised that one can eliminate sexism simply by assigning all babies Male At Birth.

It's so simple; I wonder why no one has thought of this before.

PermanentTemporary · 01/11/2021 20:03

Long long ago I volunteered for Verity. I don't have any right to speak for them as it really was 1000 years ago and I was pretty useless but tbh this stuff just makes me wince. Women with PCOS vary a lot in how the condition affects them. Because of high testosterone levels for women (at highest still half what a man with low testosterone has) we often don't look the way women are supposed to look, it can put extra barriers in the way of pregnancy and breastfeeding, it has other health implications. In some cases it can help with sport as we put on muscle more easily. Women with PCOS aren't a separate type of human but are women dealing with a specific female health condition. A woman with PCOS who transitions (trans man) i guess may benefit from a bit of extra advice if wanting to go on cross sex hormones.

Get a little braver, Verity.

That tweet might have been deleted but these two posted today use AFAB.

In general, MTF individuals balk at being included in the category "people with penises," even when they have one. Isn't that interesting? It's a painful reminder of a part they're dysphoric about! But for FTMs, "people with vaginas" or "vagina owners" or "menstruators" or "birth givers" are all supposed to be nice and inclusive.

NChat · 02/11/2021 04:02

They are using women and AFAB in those other tweets. This seems like a reasonable attempt at compromise to me.

EdgeOfACoin · 02/11/2021 06:25

@NChat

They are using women and AFAB in those other tweets. This seems like a reasonable attempt at compromise to me.
Where is the equivalent compromise for men? Where are the tweets describing 'men and AMAB individuals'?

Also, this 'compromise' reduces the word 'woman' to being a gender identity.

Woman = Adult Human Female, no more, no less. It is a biological descriptor that includes all ftm transitioners and excludes all mtf transitioners.

If we accept such a 'compromise' we are agreeing that the word 'woman' mean something other than adult human female. Furthermore, by accepting such a 'compromise', we are aligning ourselves with whatever this alternative definition means.

What does 'woman' mean in this context?

Ffs. Good they at least listened a little. We don’t need compromise. I’ll accept compromise the day women are not support animals for men.

TheTeaFairy · 02/11/2021 06:56

Apologies for repeating myself but:

Babies are not ASSIGNED male or female. Birth sex is OBSERVED.

TheTeaFairy · 02/11/2021 06:57

AFAB really gets my goat Hmm

TheTeaFairy · 02/11/2021 07:00

Know I'm preaching to the converted but it crops up with maddening frequency.

BadlyFormedQuestion · 02/11/2021 07:18

@TheTeaFairy

Yes.

No one ‘assigned’ a sex to my children. They looked, saw a penis and recorded them as male.

Gncq · 02/11/2021 21:15

So why does anyone bother going for a gender scan anyway?
Just ask the midwife to assign the unborn child whichever gender is next up according to the system of assignment. Job done. Could probably do it over the phone, or online. Much quicker.
