Well it’s not all good news, the transgender part was only a fraction of the bill and there was some pressure to drop that section, which IMO they should have done. The bill would have also have made misogyny a hate crime, among other things. Furthermore it got totally hijacked by the fascists and the Catholic Church, not bedfellows I wish to be associated with and certainly not looking out for women’s rights.

It will need to be re-presented, but hopefully without the self ID element as that was one of the most contentious issues.

??? No, I live in Italy and have friends who are proponents of the bill. None are keen on self ID and they pushed to get that element removed from the bill, initially to ensure a smoother passage through the lower house.

The fascists and the Catholic Church who blocked it certainly did not do so solely for the gender and self ID element (if at all, both are proponents of misogyny and anti women’s rights so probably didn’t care about that point). They don’t want acceptance of the gay community and do not want homophobia and misogyny to become a hate crime.

Fascists is not hyperbole, we do have the fascist apologists and people who are proud to identify as such in parliament.

@Melassa isn't a pessimist, OP - just well informed. All well and good that self-id is off the table, but the bill could make misogyny and homophobia hate crimes and the opposition to that is depressing. So no, it's not entirely good news.
