Fair Cop Report on misogyny in policing

Spero · 24/10/2021 17:12

'The Invisible Strand' is out tomorrow - we are sending a copy to every PCC and the Home Secretary, also to the EHRC, asking them to investigate. Lisa Townsend the PCC for Surrey has written a foreword.

The letter reads

"I am writing on behalf of the campaigning group ‘Fair Cop’. I write to you as the statutory body established to help eliminate discrimination and reduce inequality and attach to this letter a copy of our recent report ‘The Invisible Strand’

This report highlights our concerns that operational policing decisions around the recording and investigation of ‘hate crimes’ and ‘hate incidents non crime’ are

  1. Inherently discriminatory towards women, and in particular those women who hold the protected belief that biological sex is fixed at fertilisation and is immutable.
  2. Pay no or insufficient attention to the public sector equality duty and have caused or encouraged a public perception that one monitored strand – ‘transgender’ – is offered an enhanced level of police protection and interest, above any other monitored strand or protected characteristic.

A copy of this report will be sent to every Police and Crime Commissioner, the Home Secretary and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, Fire and Rescue Services, in light of the Home Secretary’s recently announced plans to write to the Inspectorate to conduct a ‘thematic inspection’ of the police forces’ ability to detect and deal with misogynistic and predatory behaviour.

We would therefore be grateful if you would consider the matters that we set out in this report and explain what action you are willing to take in this regard.""

We will publish a link to the PDF on Twitter - please do amplify if you think its useful.

One thing that isn't get the coverage it deserves is this supercomplaint against the Police by women who have suffered domestic abuse at the hands of Police officer partners and others employed by the Police:

I have no idea what the tweeter is trying to say there!

I don't even vaguely understand what that police officer is arguing for there.

My deficit, I know. I'd be grateful if someone could explain, please.

KittenKong · 24/10/2021 22:12

Her response to the announcement that sex would be used to describe criminals.

Seems like an odd takeaway to that announcement.

We are fair cop are on it

“...is indeed a legitimate account. It is also entirely unaccountable which is why we will be taking legal action“

Seems like an odd takeaway to that announcement.

It's not faux-naivety on my part, I genuinely don't understand what she is arguing for here.

Unless she explains it, internalised misogyny seems to be all that I can glean from the Co-Chair's comment (as that is her picture on the account).

Hi @Spero. Good work, as always. Thank you.

I've been watching out for Harry's appeal result for 7 months.

Spero · 24/10/2021 22:58

It's taking a stupidly long time!

Thanks OP

ItsLateHumpty · 24/10/2021 23:09

Thanks FairCop

And thanks PP for the screen shot of that reply because it is now hidden by the tweet author and I couldn't work out what they'd said from the replies. Now I've seen the tweet, I understand the replies but I don't understand what the original tweet is arguing for?!

I made the mistake of doing it, forgetting the new unwritten rule of Mumsnet about "archive today" links. Do they ever let posts go through after "looking at them" or is that a euphemism for "throw in bin"?

littlbrowndog · 24/10/2021 23:30

Yeah gotta love it. A official police Twitter account says to priti Patel stop recording women as victims

That will solve it

SpindelWhorl · 24/10/2021 23:32

I'm still Shock at that tweet.

nauticant · 24/10/2021 23:34

Ahh, it looks like all archive links get caught, not just those at the .is domain.

The tweet above can be readily found if you search for it on well known archiving websites.

Spero · 25/10/2021 07:10

Report here if I am allowed to link? Not sure what policy is now.

That tweet, from a police officer and yet they wonder why they aren't trusted anymore.
